Man Gateway is pissing me off so bad. This is completely bullsh!t.
That email they sent you is total bullsh!t.

"We regret that our supply of the PENTIUM 4 1.6A GHZ PGA2-478 W/512K CACHE has been depleted"
As I've been saying so many times, I've followed the 1.6A at Gateway since the beginning of time and they have never had the 1.6A INSTOCK.
Now that their supplier INGRAM MICRO has them in stock now(I know cause buy.com and computer4sure have them now), they decided not to fullfil the orders ???
How is it that their supply been depleted when they never had them in the first place ??

This is so unethical and so bullsh!t.
I didn't even order an 1.6A and I'm pissed.

Expandable You should call them up and ask how can it be depleted when they never had them INSTOCK in the first place.

BTW, when did NEC buy Gateway. As one who worked for a VAR in the early '90s, I always thought NEC was over-priced and over-rated. Their market presence dropped accordingly and now they seemed to have come up with enough cash to buy Gateway. Way to go Nippon! Gateway may be gone in a few years if so and Dell will be even bigger. >>

I have a dilemma - I just bought the 1.6 and P4s333. I now need memory. According to this thread, seems like everyone is using Crucial and a total of 512mb. Will I still be able to get the same results (133 fsb) w/ 256(yes I am new to this oc'ing stuff). Right now i cannot justify paying 180.00 for memory that I have a feeling will drop in price a few months from now. In which I can just order another stick of 256. Any help on this would greatly appreciated. I need to make my decision by today. Thanks

Mainboard comparision to go with the P4-1.6a Northwood.

The Intel I845D and SiS645 chipset is king to go with 1.6a. The VIAP4X266a is a no go.

My 1.6A Success Story:

Bought a 1.6A from Newegg (Costa Rica chip for $135) and a Gigabyte 8SRX from mwave (SIS645, only $80 shipped!). Sold my Crucial PC2100 DDR at FS/T and picked up a 512mb stick of Samsung PC2700 for $135. Now running it at 2.25ghz (141FSB/177MEM) at 1.575v and 2.6v for the memory.

I am under the impression that I should get the Asus P4B266 and standard PC2100 DDR mem (Crucial most likely). Is this correct?

Are u sure Crucial PC2100 is enough? alot of people are using Samsung PC2700.

How about the Asus P4B533 board? it's only $99 at newegg.

How come P4B266 is alot more? $140, it has the same features as P4B533 which is newer

it looks as if the Asus P4B266-c is a stock/oem board and sells for a lot less than the retail version. Googlegear has the P4B266-c for 111.00 and the P4B266 for 139.00. In the OC forum it seems that the cheaper -c version is giving better results.
