<< BigJ thanks for laying out those options. The power supply thing confuses me. I'm running a BX board w/ a Celeron 400 oc'd to 500, 4 HD's, a DVD-Rom & a CD-RW. Never had a problem. The Northwood is a .13 micron chip & supposedly uses less power, so shouldn't this still be plenty? >>

You may need a new power supply. The P4 uses a new type of power supply which comes with an extra cable that connects to your mobo. I've heard you can get around this by buying a Asus board that lets you just plug in a 4 pin cable from your power supply into the motherboard.

I e-mailed, and offered the board for $158.04.

In so many words I said "screw this" and went to my local computer store and picked up a P4B266 for $179. Yep, it's more expensive, yep I paid tax, yep I can get OEM cheaper from Newegg, but you know what? I don't care I'm installing windows xp at 2133 at default voltage, and I know the chip/board POSTs at 2400 (150FSB) at default voltage too.... This board and chip is sweet! The heatsink isn't even all that warm to the touch -- a far cry from my Athlon!

Can't wait to get it up and running to see how high I can take this beast.

By the way, what are your thoughts on Samsung DDR memory? That's all the shop had; I was thinking about ordering some crucial anyway and returning this stuff (saving $10 in the process), but would I be better off with Kingmax?

I'm thinking of doing that also. I like the P4B266 a lot, looks like a solid OC'er and in addition, it runs cooler then AMD anyday. Does tha Asus board require addition Case standoff screws for the P4 chip? anyone?

No dude,

I haven't gotten it yet. Supposedly this 1.6A can OC to 2.2 Ghz and beyond. It;s just a matter of getting the right motherboard, which would probably be the Asus P4b266 series.

Damn, w9design, it's posts like yours that keep me going on this project. What kind of cooling are you using? Memory?

Here's some related items:

(1) It may still be possible to get a hot deal on memory: Centon DDR SDRAM 256 MB sticks for about $40 at the Circuit City B&M near you, if in stock. It's OOS at their web site, but if you specify in-store pick-up, you might get lucky. I found 2 sticks for myself at their Lawrenceville, NJ location. (Edit: CC just left me a message: though the web site confirmed 2 sticks, the store could only find one in stock, but "would continue looking.")

(2) You can get a bundle with a P4 1.6A processor and Microsoft Windows XP Pro OEM for $265 at Googlegear. Based on their current selling price of $150 for the processor, that makes XP Pro $115, which is as cheap as you'll find it. (I didn't find this until after I bought the processor there, and they won't be flexible with me. Oh well...they won't get my mobo business.)

(3) Before getting the P4B266-C (OEM version) at newegg, I wanted to find the best deal on a P4B266 (retail version). I found it at 1stEweb.com (about $142 shipped), but this vendor rates only a 2.0/7 at Resellerratings.com. A must to avoid. And some of those Pricewatch-listed deals, which start around $144-145 plus shipping, are shaky. Caveat emptor there!

Hope this helps somebody...

I'd like to know about your memory too w9design, and is it running at 166 or are you able to run it at 133 and the chip at 166 (I'm still not real clear on that).
I got my chip from mwave yesterday, only problem is now I have to wait for my tax returns to get deposited b4 I can buy my motherboard and memory... unless someone knows someone who wants a PIII 700 at 1006 on an Asus cusl2-c with 2x256meg crucial cas2 chips

OK for those who wants to know about the Power Supply for the P4.
They newer power supplies that are P4 ready comes with this small square 4 hole plug.
You can see it in this PICTURE

However, if you don't have a P4 power supply, the Asus Asus P4B266 MB let you use your old power supply.
You can see it in this PICTURE. It sit right next to the main power connector.

Although, using this option is fine, you should get a P4 power supply if you ave the money.

On the subject of DDR rams, if you have the Crucial DDR Pc2100, since they are rated at 133, they should have no problem running at 140.
Which means 16x140fsb = 2.24ghz. Most people have these Crucial rams get it too 160 no problem.
I read several reviews where they got the Crucial to go as high as 168.

If you want better rams, get the Corsair xms2400, they reviewers got them as high as 172.

From what I am reading does this mean that the P4B266c is the oem version without USB 2.0? Please correct me if I am wrong. I can't find jack at the Asus site about the C board.

I think the main differences between the -C version and the version selling for 140+ is:

Onboard LAN
Onboard Audio
USB 2.0

There are many differences. You guys need to check out Asus's web site. They clearly explain all the differences.

Things to look out for because I have yet to find an online retailer that lists them correctly.

1. There are two versions of the onboard sound.
2. The ethernet is a realtek 10/100 (works fine)
3. USB 2.0

There are combinations of these 3 things too.

I have also yet to see someone selling the version with an ehternet port built in.

It seems most of the reviews and comments I've read are people overclocking with 256 meg of memory. Does anyone know if the crucial 512 meg chip or the $113 mushkin 512 meg chip will run at 150Mhz... that's what I'm gonna shoot for and I don't really like the idea of shelling out the extra $$ to get pc2400 chips, plus if I read right people have trouble running 2 256 meg pc2400 at 150Mhz...

Any help?

Just wanted to mention I found the AVC Sunflower at 1CoolPc for $24 + shipping, that's the cheapest I've seen it and you can't beat reseller ratings of 6.8/7.0

Edit: Shipping is $4.35 to me in Southern CA, and no tax.
