Just bit the bullet and ordered the 1.6A/P4B266 combo from mwave. Can't wait to get my AMD killer!!!! All I need now is some DDR, what is the best overclockable memory out there? Crucial? Centon? Micron? Kingston??? any help would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't gotten a call or a cancelation email, which might be good.

Does anyone else seem to be a go at this price?

Regarding P4 and power supply:

If you don't have the $$$ for a new P4 PS and the board doesn't have ASUS' adapter,

Directron sells an adapter

Props to someone else who found this.

Thanks Duke, I may end up buying the adapter or I may just go with oc'ing the Tualatin. I'll have figure out if the cost differential (Tualatin would cost about $275 shipped vs. $325 - $375 for the Northwood P4) is worth performance gain. Anyone have a site(s) with benchmarks to compare oc'd Tualatin-S 1.26/Northwood 1.6? Maybe I can auction my current motherboard/ram + extra sound card/videocard for a few bucks to make this work for me.
Thanks for your help everyone!

Ok, this site shows that the Pentium 4 2.2GHz as the highest scoring desktop CPU. It appears from the description of the CPU's that what they are calling the Xenon 2.2GHz is actually the Northwood Pentium 4 2.2GHz.
As you can see, the Tualatin at 1.4GHz (which is at least how fast I'd oc the 1.26GHz chip) runs at 81% of the P4. Is that worth the extra $50-$100 cost of the P4??

I checked my order status, it went to canceled with no call or email. Maybe since I was a small-time buyer, only ordered one, they may have felt no need to call or email the change.

Hi all,

Looks like this Cpu 1.6a can really do 2.2GHz and more (w9design did it). This deal seems really getting hotter. So I just update the thread to reflect this.

P4 1.6a + Asus P4B266-C OEM ) = ~277 Shipped over Newegg.

Or you could get the Asus P4B266-C (Bulk) $117.25 + 1.6a Northwood $145 = $262 plus shipping at googlegear and they are in stock.

I think it is helpfull to have a theard (over Overclock Forum) for this particular CPU to disscuss about it

Tell me what you guys think.

<< Just wanted to mention I found the AVC Sunflower at 1CoolPc for $24 + shipping, that's the cheapest I've seen it and you can't beat reseller ratings of 6.8/7.0

Edit: Shipping is $4.35 to me in Southern CA, and no tax.
>>

Actually, PC Power and Cooling has the Sunflower although they don't call it the SunFlower. A couple of guys got it and said it comes in an AVC box and all the specs are the same as a Sunflower (they must just have it made more generic for them).

It can be found here for 19.00 shipped:
Link

A couple people said it is the same thing and I have one that will be here Monday but check out the specs and make your own determination.

I am not too sure about P4b266-C from GoogleGear being Retail. It never says it is retail plus under 'Features and Benefits' it says BULK. I tried calling the sales at GoogleGear, they want me to leave a message! Anybody can confirm/deny this? Thanks!

Here's a good price for ppl looking to save some $:

MSI 645 Ultra Mobo w/ 3 DDR Slots and is supposed to support 333mhz DDR (PC 2700).
MSI 645 Ultra (MS-6547 6547-010) P4 DDR 333 400MHz FSB SOCKET 478 ATX MOTHERBOARD - RETAIL

P4 1.6A Northwood
Intel Pentium 4 1.6A GHz 512K Socket 478 Processor 400MHz Processor Bus- RETAIL version. With / Heatsin & Fan.

For Me it came out to Subtotal » $221.00
Shipping and Handling Charge » $ 14.95
Grand Total » $ 235.95

With that extra cash you can buy some PC2700 DDR Ram instead of going for cheaper PC2100 (hey, 40 bucks is 40 bucks). The MSI board is also retail, and from many benchmarks the SIS 645 chipset seems to offer better perfomance.

I'm just about to pull the trigger on this deal. I'll try it with my current case/power supply (235 watts) & if that doesn't work I'll upgrade. One more thing about the motherboard. Is anyone going to go with a Rambus board? I'm considering it for when faster Rambus comes out.

A friend said he might buy the guts of my current system (Cel 400MHz @500Mhz on ABIT BM6 board with 256k Crucial CAS2, Soundblaster AWE 64, STB Velocity 128) -- how much do you think I should ask him for this or how much do you think I'd get at ebay?

Thanks for everyone's help!

Rambus doen't even come close to the OC'ing which is possible using DDR. It's true, RDRAM offeres better performance at the same MHZ, but is a P4 1.6A on a 115mhz FSB really going to compare to some of the speeds attained using DDR Ram? I think not.

Can someone confirm the board P4B266-c over googlegear is either OEM/Bulk or retail? cyberizer9 sees it as Bulk but I read a whole discription and did'n't see it anywhere.

Right underneath "Features and Benefits" it says Bulk. I bought it from newegg. Didn't want to deal with the hassle of dealing with googlegear if something went wrong. Less than stellar reviews about rma's and returns.

*on a side note.: can anyone help me get my original username back? I typoed on a change of email and now I'm locked out of my origianl account. It's been like a month with no response from mods.

There's a 1year replacement policy for oem motherboards at Newegg. I just called and confirmed this.

Saw it! Have no idea why I missed it. I edited the thread to reflect this. Thanks Flint7 and let us know how the board perform.

Didn't want to deal with the hassle of dealing with googlegear if something went wrong I agree if I decide to go with this board.

Note: Googlegear also have 1yr warranty on it.

Here is low down on this chip(well mine anyway). As far as I can tell the oc ability is totally dependant on your memory. My processor is running at 149FSBx16=2384@1.65v. What is amazing is it is running at a temp of 38-40 C idle and 41-45 C with a load. This is with the stock HSF! The reason I know it is the memory is because 149 FSB is the same I could get the memory to oc on both my epox and soyo Dragon + board. This is the same crucial 2100 DDR that I was using in both boards. With this cool of temp I bet with high performance memory it would hit 166x16=2656. Now that is some serious overclocking. This makes sense since the northwoods are all probably the same chip with a different multiplier unlocked. By the way my 3dmark2001 score using a regular gf3(not TI) was 8329@1024x768.

LOL I am such a dummy sometimes. After I flashe my BIOS my temps went up to the above.

What is amazing is it is running at a temp of 15-18 C idle and 20-25 C with a load.

I'd double check that if I were you.... that's only 59-64 F idle and 68-77 full load... electrons get warmer then that

This CPU is really amazing!

NucleusWDS just report to this Thread that his 1.6a hit 2.3GHz @ standard air cooled. And his Thread show how easily it is to overclock this CPU.
