i just got back from the computer fair in pomona and helped my friend purchase a intel 1.8a ghz and p4b266 w/ audio. the price was $197 for the cpu and $148 for the motherboard. prices seem to be the same online and at the fair. i just ordered some mushkin ddr 256mb ram @cas2 and i want to see how high i can overclock that baby. what are the settings in bios i should use?? (voltage, pci mhz, fsb.. blah blah ) also, there are some jumpers on the motherboard.. should i tamper with that?

XFILE, good points.

Here' s mine.

My Cel 300a still serve me find (still have it) but I upgrade to PII700e ($230 @ Onvia, somebody remember a very long thread) to get the performance of ~1GHz ($400-500 at the time). Now same theory, buy 1.6a (~$150) to get performance of 2.2Ghz and up (~400-500? Not sure).

My whole point is I don't really need it. It's just too good to pass.

I'm another Sis 645 fan -- I picked up the Asus P4S333 + a 1.6A from mwave.com, and set it up this morning. Because I'm an idiot, on my initial install (before I had even installed WinXP) I went straight to 133 FSB (2.13 GHz) in the BIOS. I installed XP while overclocked! I've now been using this PC all day -- very stable and I'm very happy. I'll push up the o/c later, to see where this CPU tops out.

Other specs: two 256 MB Crucial PC2100 DIMMs (I'll put a third in later), retail HSF.

<< I am running at 140Mhz FSB on my MWAVE.COM 1.6A... 2324 Mhz! Rock solid on Windows XP Professional with 1GB of RAM. I just got the lifetime warrenty DDR PC133 512MB from MWAVE.COM. I ran RC5 cracker for hours, in a 85 degree room... no problem! I haven't tried to go higher, I'm happy at 2324 Mhz. >>

What voltage are you running the CPU core at to get 2324 (don't you mean 2234? 16*140 = 2240) and how high does the motherboard let you take the VCore? Doesn't this board have a lot of memory mutliplier too so that you can keep the memory speed down at high bus speeds for those of us that don't have great memory?

Any info would be appreciated as I am considering this board. Thugsrook really like it... of course he killed his 1.8a in it but I bet it isn't related to the motherboard.

There is too another 300A my old 550E slot 1 Coppermine ran at 842Mhz stable as heck and still does it. However for the sake of PCI bus stability I took it down to 733Mhz(it's on a BX board). 842 is a 53% overclock and 733 is a 33%.

It was running 842 for several months until I swapped my video card out and changed some PCI components which didn't like the high fsb

I was using Motherboard Monitor (which is not compatible with this board) to get CPU reading. I installed WCPUID and I get 2240Mhz. 140.00 Mhz 16x Multiplier = 2240Mhz.

The Pomona, CA computer fair has vendors selling the 1.6A 512k CPU's for $144-$147 plus tax. I expect the price of these chips to fall further, but $144 is the hottest deal I've seen.

Holly crap. I have the FSB set at 150Mhz, running at 150 x 16.0 = 2400. This is on the stock heatsink+fan, STOCK voltage, P4 1.6Ghz. Using the Asus P4S333.

I can't believe how well this overclocks. I remember trying to get P3 700 to run at 933 and all the effort it took (I had three of those systems).

It did just crash after running distributed.net RC5 client for 5 minutes. So I'm backing down to 148Mhz. I'll try bumping the voltage up in 24 or 48 hours.

ok so is there any difference in the overclocking between these two boards? i can't get to asus' site right now, but saw with the p4s333 you can step the voltage up in .05v increments... what about the p4b266? i am kind of leaning towards the intel chipset (even though i have a sis with a duron and am pleased), my current main machine is a via and it sucks a lot!

is 32bit color that much better than 16 bit color? i played max payne at 1024x768x16 on my p3-667mhz. fps was in the 20's, but nothing was lagging or choppy that i noticed.

unreal2 coming out in June? are the makers of Unreal2 good at their timetable? or this another warcraft3/duke nuke 'em forever type?

And while we're on the topic of overclocking:
is oc'ing an athon XP the same as the other athons? ie: use a pencil and color in the bars?

heh i just read that

think im gonna go with the P4b - $10 bucks more buys me Intel approved. From that review above it doesnt seem like ddr333 is even really ready to be implemented.

i guess i just cant resist the allure of a $450 2.2GHz (knock on wood) machine...

mb+cpu $277 from newegg, $150 crucial 2x256mb... sawheat (tide me over until i can afford the dual amd)

I'd suggest getting the one 512 Crucial instead of the 2 256's, I think it's just slightly cheaper with the anandtech discount.

thanks dude, i never even think of 1 stick being reasonably priced these days

comes to a buck more than 2x256... minus ebates and they're basically equal.

That's cool, I guess is doesn't matter too much then. But keep in mind you'll only get to use 2 slots on the Auss p4b266 if that's the one you're getting because it will support three slots only if you use single sided memory.

Well, my p4b266-c and crucial 512 pc2100 are at the local fedex facility, which means I'll be getting them tomorrow (Monday)...

Just finished removing the thermal pad from the retail hsf... that wasn't too bad... Arctic Silver II on hand...

Got my data backed up... ready for a format and reinstall once the parts are here.

Hopefully I'll put up my results here sometime tomorrow evening...

just curious, would using pc2400 or pc2700 ddr ram be better than pc2100 in overclocking a NW 1.6a/P4B266-C setup? like doesn't that mean you can jack the FSB up higher? for example, i may consider buying cheaper generic pc2400 or pc2700 than buying a stick of 256mb crucial pc2100...
