I got my chip today and its CostaRica like Flatbroke's.

I hope it does ok. It seems like all the high oc's are from Malay.

CLiu, your pc133 wont fit in the slot and you couldnt mix it with ddr anyway, where are you getting your kingmax from? I got mine from googlegear, it was $94.00 for 256mb, I bought two, you will be fine with one stick just put it on the top of your list for the next time you have $$$$$$$$$

Remember the 300a time, the made in Malay OC better than CostaRica. I hope it doesn't hold true for the 1.6a.
(My CostaRica 300a made @450!).

Dug,

Where you got your chip at anyway?

<< QUESTION: Should I pick up a cpu now to increase my chances of getting a good overclocker (and hold onto it until I'm ready to build the system)? Is there a chance the 1.6a's for sale in a month will be less overclockable, or will it be okay to buy one later on?

Any opinions?
>>

My opinion is pure conjecture, but, if like they say, the 1.6a is the next 300a, then you know very-highly-overclockable chips don't come too often. I didn't want to risk losing out on the current 1.6a yields nor Intel coming out with a new, less overclockable batch, so I made my purchase.

My question is on the high price of DDR RAM. I feel now is not really the best time to buy them. The price may be artificially inflated because of demand because of Intel's release of the 845D chipset. I suspect they'd come down again once vendors realize they have so much inventory and the excitement dies down. Again, pure conjecture. For now, I'm getting 256MB. Some other opinions, please.

Got mine from Newegg. I ordered the Asus and chip at the same time, but for some reason the motherboard won't be here until tomorrow.

There's a few people in the database over at Overclockers.com, and the one's that overclock higher look like they are from Malay

As long as I hit 133fsb I won't really care. And I don't think that I would notice too much difference between 2.1 and 2.3 anyway.

arg.... i installed the p4b266 motherboard and connected all the cables. then i started to install the cards.. it seems like the asus motherboard uses AGP 1.5V VIDEO CARDS!!! i have an older style agp video card ( voodoo 3000 ) and i cant use it cuz it works on agp 3.3v!!!!! people beware, make sure u have newer agp video cards!

I believe all 845d chipsets use only 1.5v agp cards... not just the asus. I could be wrong in this.

This gives you an excuse to pick up one of the $50 GTS-V cards from newegg, that ought to be a nice jump in performance from your voodoo 3000.

Under extreme testing I had a few problems at 152Mhz FSB, so I backed down to 150Mhz FSB.

Even with 80 degree room temps (out in a RV in Arizona right now), I ran everything hard and system has been rock stable!

Specs:

Asus P4S333
Pentium 4 1.6A @ 150Mhz FSB = 2.4Ghz
Stock Retail heatsink / fan / cooling pad (MWave.com)
3 512MB PC2100 DDR modules from Crucial.com, 1.5GB RAM total
Windows XP Professional

Sweet. This is the best overclocked system I have ever built. I've done at least five P3 700's and could never get them to reliable go from 100 -> 133Mhz FSB (under extreme load problems would crop up). It is great using just the stock heatsing, no special cooling grease, etc.

This is in a 4u rack-mount server case, I don't have any special fans or anything!

As I said earlier in the thread, I also have another system with the P4B266 - it is a nice system and all, but the RAM limitations of the motherboard make me recommend the P3S333 over it. Plus the P4S333 is cheaper, with no added problems.

All my cards don' seem to mind the 150Mhz FSB...

P.S. One problem I do have is VMWare Workstation 3.0 won't run at 2.2Ghz or higher. Others are reporting this on non-overclocked systems on the vmware newsgroups - so I suspect it isn't the system.

Slacker,
Thanks for the reply. I got everything (CPU, mainboard, memroy) from Googlegear. Do you mean to say I cannot even mix 256MB with 512MB DDR memory? Too bad, it's true. I have not paid attention lately. Is memory price keep dropping? I kind of feel it's higher than it was before!?

Good luck everyone! I will report my result when mine arrives.

Costa Rican overlcockers...hurry up any let us know your results (maybe they're better than Malaysian chips...?)

Otherwise, I think I'm gonna order one now, just in case.

So far, everybody has got Malaysian chips from mwave and googlegear, right? Only newegg is sending out the Costas (actually, some of both, I guess).

Question to those with the p4b266:

did you get the onboard sound to work ? Mine keeps crashing XP everytime it plays the opening sound. I disabled it for now and works fine.

Well, my P4 1.6A and p4b266 should be here tomorrow from Essential Computer. It was 317 shipped FedEx 2 day from there for both (this is not the p4b266-C, it has the audio and the USB2.0). They shipped it within hours of ordering. Now to see if it is a Malay or Costa Rica chip. I already have a 1.8A and a Gigabyte GA-8IRXP so I will try every combination of these boards and chips and post my results.

So far the Gigabyte and 1.8A run stable at 2.4 with 1.7V. I am hoping for better luck with the Asus board and the 1.8A or at least better results from the 1.6A.

I will then either RMA something or just sell it... I am thinking the Gigabyte might have to go even though I love the board minus the reboot problem.

Well I certainly hope so, but I believe so. I have a CL Annihilator 2 myself. I'll find out when I receive everything next week. In any event, I finally ordered everything (1.6a, asus p4b266-C) and will let you guys know what I can get. I also have Crucial RAM which I bought when prices were just starting to go up, so I have a 256 MB ddrimm waiting for it.

Considering that my current computer is a p2-300 sl2w8 overclocked at 450mhz, I can't tell you how happy I will be when I'll have that new system up and running!

Now if I could find a decently priced hard drive with good size... (60+gigs at ~$80 or so would be nice)

I had been keeping my eye on the Northwood for awhile, I'm real happy this thread popped up. Thanks guys!

taking a look at my CR chip from newegg, i saw that the hsf has a tim on it already. should i deal with scraping that crap off and using AS3?

I removed the TIM on mine to apply AS2 and I can't get an accurate reading on cpu temp (some asus thing) but after running prime95 for 2 hrs 44 minutes at 150 Mhz (1.6 @ 2.4) the stock intel heatsink was still cool to the touch... actually cooler than room temperature.... go figure

i have a costa rica chip and i am using crucial 2100 ddr ram, i can run at 133FSB stable (ran prime95 overnight and 3dmark2k1 the next night with no lockups or errors)...but anything above 133fsb i get errors in prime or reboots under 3dmark2k1...so im not sure about the overclockablility of the costa rica chips...but it could just be dependent on your ram cuz my cpu never gets above 40C and idles at around 32C
