yeah, my local also has the khypermedia. it's worse because the khypermedia only has 8x dvd+r, no support for dvd-r.

I keep getting those "first order" coupon, I keep using it by phone order, no CSR turns me down yet; a couple of time, I did not realize it is phone order coupon, and used it in the store, manager took $25 off without scanning the coupon. Maybe I am just too lucky? (Here in Louisiana.)

Actually, This drive writes +r media great and Cyberdrive is adding -r/rw support as we speak. I have a beta version right now. The -r/rw writing quality is not so good at the moment, but they are still developing the firmware. I also have a BTC 1004 which is nearly identical to the 1008 and I go for the Cyberdrive for sure.

I don't really understand, why, for drives of a new enough generation to support 8x, and potentially dual-layer, why they aren't all defacto also supporting dual-format by default as well? It seems as though it should be a basic requirement.

PS. Went to my local OM today, picked up a Cendyne 4x DVD +/- R/RW drive (NEC 1300A), that had probably obviously been a customer return, after asking for an open-box discount, got it for $30. (Price marked was $49.99, original clearance price, and still the price in the computer. So I got a whopping 40% open-box discount.)

Kind of a toss-up really, I'd rather have dual-format myself, than 8x speed but limited to 'plus' formats only.

I like 8 min quality burns ..even tho my DW800A @ 1418 and counting (have a spare one as well) is dual I don't like the results..I have a NEC 1100 and 1300 and both burn +R(booktyped to DVDRom) with better results than with -R..as always ..ymmv ..and thank you VL

I receive coupon by snail mail. This month is "85 in savings enclosed!" I don't know how I get on the mailing list. I did quite a few rebates over last two years, it could be the reason.

yes! but if you don't get the one you want you can take it back to a officemax store and exchange it for the one you want if the store has it in-stock.

first order means if the CSR ask you if you already have a account with officemax you say "NO" which means this is your "first order" from OM.

The curent price on-line is $99.98, that should also be the price you get on phone orders. $99.98 + $0.27 Paper Clips - $50 MIR - $25 phone coupon = $25
The rebate is valid from 7/18 to 8/28.

Note that if you get a BTC drive, it writes CD-Rs @ 40X, not the 24X the OfficeMax ad specifies.
