From Dec. 10 to 16 at CompUSA, after $15 CompUSA rebate. This game is getting some very good reviews, although Mr. McGee appears to have an insufferable ego.

a page full o' reviews

Update: pricematch with Best Buy for $29.99, making it $14.99 after rebate.

I'd have to agree to a point on the ego thing, but not in regard to the title. This is certainly a new take on the whole wonderland story as far as popular culture goes... I'm happy to let McGee call it his own.

On the other hand, this whole movie producer thing and his claiming in interviews that he is going to "make a quick game just to line his pockets" does seem to lead to your conclusion. Like gamers will line up to suck down whatever quick crap he whips up post-alice just because of the success of this game and his endorsement of the new one... hardly.

This game rules. It is a graphical splender, tantilizing spectacular textures combinded with excellent level design. The game itself if very addictive as well as cleverly crafted. This is one I think everyone should play if not legally own as well. For $15 this is a perfect buy and not a deal you want to miss...

I just won it about 10 minutes ago. The game is simply awesome. If you don't own it you HAVE to buy it! A milestone in thirdperson gaming for sure. Although I'd give more credit to the programmers and artists who made "American's" version of Alice a reality.

From my undertanding, the story of Alice in Wonderland was written a very long time ago. Lewis Carol only rewrote it, telling the story the way he wanted it to be told. Hence the title, Lewis Carol's Alice in Wonderland. Nobody owns rights to Alice since the story is in the public domain, sort of like the story of Aladin and the magic lamp. So when American McGee created the game he had to put his name on there so people would realize it's his own demented Wonderland.

well, the game picks up where lewis carroll left off... so in a way, its not his own version. Anyway, I heard that the reason American's name is on there is because its catchy... I mean you can't forget a name like that. I don't think it was his idea to use his name in the title. Marketing.. ya know.

Look, it may be a great game, which is why I was anxious to post this sale price, but if you read an interview with American McGee, you quickly come to conclusion that this is a supremely smug gen-X-er who really needs to get his ass kicked. As far as I know, his sole claim to fame before this game was being one of several level designers for Id, before he was fired.

As Daily Radar delicately pointed out, "The level designers and music makers, we assume with American's help, have created a version of Wonderland true to the game's story." Meaning, he was just one "programmer" (if level design=programming) on a large team.

I'll leave it to Old Man Murrary to give you the true American McGee:

"Today he published an interview with American McGee in which they discuss American McGee's "American McGee's Alice". Redwood starts with an easy question whose answer is seemingly obvious, "How did you first come up with the idea behind Alice?" McGee begins to ramble and in the process manages to mention Doom, Doom 2, Quake, the freeway, American McGee, the band Crystal Method, his other big idea "a game where you fought bugs from the future", and Quake 2. After a few hundred words, he stops. You can't tell from the way the interview is written, but I imagine there was a thirty or forty second pause while Redwood waited for him to catch his breath and say something about Lewis Carroll. At the point where it must have become uncomfortably clear that McGee was done answering, Redwood says for him:

Obviously the original Lewis Carroll stories (Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass) were your basic source for Alice...

Which reminds McGee to thank Tim Burton and Edward Gorey. I gotta give Redwood credit, that was a classy way to inject an editorial jab into the interview."

------------
I don't have a problem with someone reinterpreting a literary classic, but let's keep perspective here--the title is akin to "Levelord's Romeo and Juliet" or "Stevie Case's A Paradise Lost." :Q

Even though the creator of the game doesn't appear to be any good, the game itself is pretty darn good. The levels and gameplay is made with great detail, and it is a good game just to watch. Excellent game for any Quake3 or UT players who want something a little different than the running around and blowing crap up and the "Alice in Wonderland" lovers. Then again, you can disregard my opinion here, because it is just my opinion.

but the game rocks! im only a few hours into it but its a great production, i'd have my head up my ass to if it were my name on the box

SnowMan, you might be able to get a retroactive pricematch with CompUSA for the $34.95. And if you think creatively, you can still manage to get it from CompUSA for a net $19.95, with the original store getting back a sealed copy to sell at that extortionist price.

this whole movie producer thing and his claiming in interviews that he is going to "make a quick game just to line his pockets" does seem to lead to your conclusion

Hmmm...so his next game might be "American McGee's Daikatana"?

This game is fantastic, and is fun to watch as well. I got it a few days ago, and played it for hours, w/ my door open, and some people came over and spent hours just watching me play it. Really sucks you into it.

I ordered this online as the closet CompUSA is 70 miles from here. I'm looking for a rebate coupon in case anyone picked up an extra or two.

Picked this up today but missed out on collecting the rebate coupon.

Do they accept duplications of the coupon? If so can someone please
email me a scan or contact me at Nevyn1074@hotmail.com.

Thanks for the heads up on this.

While I was at CompUsa I also managed the following...

Age of Empires II 49.99 with $20 MIR

Half Life Counter Strike 19.99 / Gunman Chronicles 9.00 with $25.00 MIR
Half Life Opposing Force 19.99 get a free game (3-D Ultra Racers, Tribes, Casear 2, Casino Deluxe 2)
Made nice additions to my Half Life GotY I got for 17.99 with a $10 MIR last week from BBuy.

and I dont know if CompUsa normally do this but I got them to price match www.EBWorld.com on
Deus Ex and got that for 29.99. If I had really been more organised I would have gotten
$10 off of AoE II as well.

Sorry bad wording on my part.

Last week I purchased Half Life GotY from Best Buy for 17.99. Sierra had an on
the box rebate for $10 off.

Sierra's coupon is

Buy 1 get $10
Buy 2 get $20

The games are : Half Life GotY, Zeus, Homeworld GotY, Homeworld Cataclysm, Nascar Racing 3,
Pharoh, Gunman Chronicles, Half-Life Counter Strike, Half Life Platinum edition.)

Thanks to Compusa selling Gunman for 9.99 I just got it and Opposing Forces 19.99 for
after rebate the grand total of $5.00.

It is published by Electronic Arts. To bad about that Eidos boycot b/c Hitman Codemane: 47 is excellent and I've heard Project IGI isn't to shabby either.

The rebate is a mail-in rebate addressed to CompUSA, which you pick up on their in-store "coupon wall." CompUSA is selling the game for $34.99 with a $15 mail-in rebate. Best Buy is selling it for $29.99. So, you pricematch the BB price at CompUSA, buying the game for $29.99 plus tax out the door. Then when you get home, mail in the rebate and patiently wait (it'll probably be awhile, knowing CompUSA; be sure to photocopy before sending) for the $15 back.

The rebate form doesn't mention anything about requiring buying at regular price, and I've done this "pricematch + mail-in rebate" combo in the past, so there shouldn't be any problems, beyond typical CompUSA FUBARs.

Alice is published by EA Games.

Chiabrit, about the Sierra rebate (which, not to confuse anybody, has nothing to do with "Alice&quot, it is actually "buy 2, get $25 back." Gunman Chronicles is $19.99 before rebate at CompUSA, not the $9.99 you mentioned. Btw, I just loaded Gunman, and it looks to be quite a good buy for $9.99! ($9.99 after rebate, that is.)
