I didn't realize who it was at first because the police aren't releasing any details about the beating pending notification of next of kin.

I learned who it was by seeing another friend of mine on the news saying a few words about the victim. The victim's first name is Micheal.

He is living on disability and was a Vietnam War veteran, meaning he was an American citizen.

He is a very nice man but a little troubled due to the war.

video of the investigation: http://london.ctvnews.ca/video?binId=1.1807099

starts around the 4minute mark.

UPDATE: There are actually 2 updates:

1) Micheal is out of his coma and is pretty active considering everything that has happened to him. He talks fairly well but is still having issues. He has developed a rather odd habit (please don't laugh) - every time a nurse comes to see him he drops his pants.

2) Police have arrested 2 men for the assault:

http://www.lfpress.com/2014/08/11/london-man-faces-charges-after-assault-that-took-place-in-july

London Police have charged two men in a mid-July assault that has left the victim still in hospital.

Timothy Scott Rex, 41, has been charged with one count of aggravated assault in the attack on Michael Barnhart, 63, who remains in hospital.

The assault took place outside 337 Southdale Rd. E.

Police at first reported the time of the attack as just before 6:30 a.m. on July 15. They have revised that information, saying now that it took place seven hours earlier on July 14.

Christopher Charles Rex, 59, is charged with one count of being an accessory after the fact.

Both men are being held for a court appearance slated for Tuesday.

I hope his rehabilitation goes well.

Can't watch here at work, but I'm guessing he was a homeless guy causing trouble and got a beating??? Only guessing because you said "troubled" Vietnam vet.

Otherwise, that's sucks. Not that getting a beat down is good really at any point, if he was a crazed homeless guy threating me, I'd probably be forced to do something about it. Not a beat down, but enough strikes to make sure you weren't getting back up to chase after me.

well, there has been no change yet in his condition. He has severe head injuries and is still unconscious.

Ya don't get anything unless you ask. He's hoping to eventually find one that'll take him up on his offer :^D

Hope your friend makes a full recovery, and he finds success with his pants routine.

Glad to hear that your friend is doing better.

Minor observation. Being a Viet Vet does not necessarily mean that one is an American Citizen. For example, one of the fellows I went though the MP Academy with was a Canadian Citizen. Another fellow I went through Basic with was a German Citizen.

For reasons that weren't clear to me, the Canadian had joined and was much more enthusiastic than I was. In contrast, the German Citizen had been, like me, drafted. Though, the German did have some sort of US status (resident alien? whatever...).

Anyway, hope that your friend continues to improve.

I had forgotten about that. A number of Canadians joined the US military to fight in Vietnam.

Quite a few Canadians(IIRC somewhere between 10-20k) joined the US Army/Marines/other. Most were Natives who have/had a special status where Canadian/American didn't matter(IIRC).

I saw a guy almost beat to death by the police right outside a city lockup up once about 30 years ago.

I was actually in it at the time, was barely over the limit and got hauled in during my first divorce.

I doubt this was police related, but if you live long enough you see things.

The ones involved should have been busted IMHO later even if hae was being an ass, but he seemed to be a regular customer att.

One of the cops seemed to know him and the other three held him up so he could pummel him awhile.

Imagine that, then they threw him back in.
