What else are friends going to say? How often is some child rapist or mass murderer picked up and during interviews everyone is like, "he was the nicest guy", "never had any trouble with him", "I just can't believe it about him".

Wow.... I sincerely hope the cops were 100% sure that this is the guy who stole the PS3s. If so I have no sympathy for him getting killed.
However.... if this is a screw up and the kid was innocent then some officers are gonna be in big trouble.

Ok, I thought carefully... and armed robbery is hardly a petty crime. I'm not saying it should be punishable by the death penalty, but it certainly is a severe crime, and your analogy is pretty far off.

I would feel horrible if it was my own child that was killed. I would also feel horrible to learn that my own child committed an armed robbery, but I wouldn't want to be the one to sentence him. Maybe this is why the parents of the accused usually don't usually serve as judge and jury? The kid was certainly owed a fair trial, and it is unfortunate that wasn't able to happen. I agree that the article was not fantastic at relating the facts regarding exactly what happened, so a lot of this boils down to wait and see.

When police went to search a Wilmington house for stolen PlayStation 3 consoles last week, they brought heavily armed deputies because a picture on the Internet had made them think the college students inside might be armed.

Investigators had found an online photograph of a man who hung out at the house posing with two others and what appeared to be an assault rifle, pistols and a shotgun.

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- A grand jury on Monday indicted a former New Hanover County deputy in connection with the shooting death of a Durham teen during a raid on a Wilmington home.

Cpl. Christopher Long, 34, who was fired Friday by the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office, was indicted on a charge of second-degree murder. The charge stems from the Dec. 1 death of 18-year-old Peyton Strickland.

Strickland, a Cape Fear Community College student, was shot to death at his Wilmington home by deputies serving arrest and search warrants. Strickland and two friends were charged with assaulting a University of North Carolina at Wilmington student last month and stealing two PlayStation 3 consoles from him.

UNC-W police asked for support from the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office during the arrests of the suspects in the case because of the potential that the suspects were armed and dangerous, authorities said. Strickland had an earlier arrest on a felony assault charge.

Nine heavily armed deputies accompanied UNC-W police to Strickland's home to serve the warrants. Three deputies fired shots into the home, and sources close to the case said they believe several shots were fired before Strickland opened the door.

Strickland, who was unarmed, died of a gunshot wound to the head.

Detective Larry Robinson, 34, and Sgt. Greg Johnson, 39, were been placed on administrative leave a week ago pending the results of investigations by the State Bureau of Investigation and the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff Sid Causey and District Attorney Ben David said Monday that both deputies had been cleared of any wrongdoing in the case, have been reinstated and would return to work soon.

Causey and David declined to answer questions about the case Monday and said they planned to make no more public comments about it until Long's trial.

A second suspect in the case, Ryan David Mills, 20, of Durham, had a loaded shotgun and a ski mask in his car before his arrest, UNC-W Police Chief David Donaldson told WRAL. Investigators also found pictures of Mills on the Internet posing with guns.

Mills and Braden Delaney Riley, 21, of Apex, have been charged with armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and breaking and entering a motor vehicle, according to warrants. Both were arrested after the Dec. 1 raid on Strickland's house.

Considering that some of the shots were fired through the door, they probably didn't even have a chance to see what he was holding.

Ok, you don't even fire shots through doors unless you're at war or something. This is not Waco. This is not even someone that's KNOWN to be armed.

Even if you were going in to arrest someone that's known to be armed, you would storm in first and maybe get in a firefight. Maybe even get SWAT to go in with tear gas or flashbangs. Maybe a utilize a riot shield? The point is, this is just excessive.
