Pretty intense, and remarkable for the weight that thing has.

Although my choice would probably go to a Z06 if I had that kind of $$ for a sports car, I take nothing from the GT-R. It's capable of epic feats for sure.

What amazes me is that the last time a Formula One car raced there was in 1975 (edit-actually, 1976 was the last F1 race at the Nurburghring-the record was set in 1975) and it set a lap record of: 7:06.4 (192.8 km/h) at the German Grand Prix of 1975 - Clay Regazzoni (Ferrari). 1975!!!

A relatively crude car by today's Formula One standards:

1975 Ferrari 312 T

Niki Lauda's car

Makes you wonder what a modern F1 car could do it in if really trying...we'll never see that though.

Edit-"BMW engineers estimate a 5:30 lap would be possible if the restrictions would be removed.":shocked::shocked:

The difference in tire compounds used back then compared to now would make a huge difference.

If you could somehow put some modern rubber on that 1975 Ferrari, i'm sure you get around much faster.

I always get a kick out of Top Gear power lap times. The Gumpert Apollo, Ascari A10, Koenigsegg... are all unbelievably expensive and are the fastest things on the street, yet an Aston DBR9 is nearly 10 seconds faster. Shows how much street preparation to a race car does.

It's also funny how fast some street cars that get rejected by the Top Gear producers can run the track.

And without the dirt and dust which the Japanese team says was coating the track to impede its lap time, they figure they just might find enough extra speed to claim the record.

Without further ado, off to replace the transmission again.

What the heck, they are worried about a little dirt on the track? Geez, ZR1 had a headwind. Nissan, if you want to break a 'Ring time build the car don't whine about some dust

Track conditions can make a big difference in lap times...especially on a track that's 12+ miles long.

You know, being a "ring" and all, everyone has a headwind at some point on the track.

I saw this and was expecting alot more from Nissan. It came up shorter than the Dodge Viper which should be laughable.

Yes, but not going down the straight where speeds top 170mph. You can see if you watch the ZR1's speed climbs and then gets slowed again, then climbs as he is fighting the wind. A 30 mph gust means the cars airspeed is 200+ mph, and that is going to be one of the ZR1's best performing sections, where it should open a good gap on the GT-R.

A Viper ACR laughable? What the hell are you smoking? The ACR is THE fastest production car on the planet in the hands of a good driver.

I think what he's trying to say is all this jazz over the import when a "lowly" domestic wipes it's own ass with it.

I do...they fucking blow.

Look at the Pontiac GTO...it took a bunch of Australians to show us how to make a proper fast jelly bean of a muscle car that nobody wants to buy.

Oi

The Monaro, and subsequently the VE that you get as the G8, are great cars, dammit!

It's a BRAND problem. No one wants to spend 40k on a Pontiac. They are crappy cars and it doesn't matter how fast it is, no one wants a broke ass Pontiac.

But you take that same car and let SVT make it - GOLD!
