I have one of these. I would say the price is a warm deal.
The player works great, the remote is a little small though.

NAPA portable VCD player is a real thing,
of course you need a TV to play back VCD,
this one doesn't come with LCD screen.

I just got the dav310 from here a few weeks ago for a tad more. Not ultra quality but it does what it's supposed to for the cheap price.

if you want a REAL mp3 cd player, get the rio volt. THe price might be kinda expensive now but that's only because it just came out.

If you go with the Napa, get the 310 not the 309. We have the 310 available right now for $149.99, however we will beat mp3playerstore's price if you email us. The RioVolt/Soul is a better player, but it doesn't not have VCD output. We will be shipping the Soul player this week (it will be on our site in the next 24 hours)

check out eopinions. i was going to get one awhile back, but then decided against it. also, some of the reviews there mention the differences. i believe the 310 has a longer battery life, less stress on the laser for mp3's, and supports cd-rw. i could be wrong, but that is what i remember.

I hate to be pushing the rio like this but, the rio has support for BOTH WMA and MP3 files. WMA ownz MP3 becuase 98bit/s or sometimes even a 64bit/s WMA will be just as good or better than a 128bit/s MP3 [smaller file size but NOT at the cost of audio quality]. You should also checkout the filesize limit and directory structure. The rio has a 255 file # limit. The napa has the VCD and a cheaper price but I think that's the only good thing about napa when compared to a rio volt. the rio volt has a backlit display that displays time, track #, artist name and song instead of #s like the napa (unless you got it hooked up to a tv so it depends how you use it). The rio doesn't always spin, it spins the first few seconds (about 20 with my WMA files) as it stores the song in to the memory buffer and then stops spinning. It only spins up again if the buffer is empty or a diff song is being played. The file location, name and # is always stored in memory. There you have it, I own a rio volt and it's the best mp3 cd player so far, better mp3s players will come I just don't know when. My advice is wait for a better product or get the rio volt because every other mp3 cd player is crap (unless you plan on keeping it indoors to watch vcds and play it on your tv or you're just a shysty bastard =) ) I own a rio volt, I know. I did my hw before buying.

No need to compare the Napa to Rio,
Napa is a portable VCD player with mp3 feature (all china made dvd, vcd player now play mp3, this is nothing special). Main target is VCD player consumer.

"Its a good find, does it play SVCDs? too? can any confirm?

thanks

J "

i doubt it.

SVCD is MPEG-2 I believe. The hardware for MPEG-2 decoding is expensive, as its the same hardware used to decode DVDs.

svcds...hehe...

these vcd players are pretty cool for impromptu movie sessions.. especially if theres a computer with a cdr drive nearby.. or a cheap vcd store a la china..
used sony and toshiba ones before.

richiew:
SVCD is using MPEG-2, but not using the same compression parameters used in DVD.
I'm quite certain SVCD, which is used mainly in China, will not be popular in US as DVD is getting cheap and gives larger capacity, better quality and more fuctions.
BTW, every VCD/SVCD/MP3 player manufactured in China is really cheap, they're overpriced in US.

We carry the Napa player as well as the AVC Soul/Riovolt. The AVC soul/Riovolt is excellent. The AVC player selles for $149.95 and the Riovolt is $179.95 (If you feel more comfortable with brand names) The Napa player for the price ($114.95) is 100 times better than a Genica or similar player. HJB417,

is there any testing done that can back up your claim that WMA is far superior than mp3? I mean any info that is posted on the web? Not doubting you tho, I used WMA for the past 1 and half years, they do sound slight better.

I have also read reports where WMA 64-bit was equal or even better than MP3 128-bit in blind testing.

Is there a difference between the AVC and Rio?? Are they different players or is the AVC a rebadged Rio?? Which is better...

The AVC Soul is the same as the RioVolt, both are made by the same company. The Napa will play VCD 1.0 and 2.0 but not SVCD. I thought the VCD output looked fine, I couldn't tell a difference between the Napa and using the TV output of my TNT2. Except of course I had a remote to use and it had a host of other features, like slow-motion. Also on the WMA vs MP3, I believe WMA is better at lower bitrates, while MP3 is better at higher bitrates. I don't find 128kbps MP3 acceptable I prefer either constant bitrate of 192kbps or variable bit rate encoded with LAME. For details of mp3 encoding tests see: http://www.r3mix.net/

i dunno much about WMA, but it "sounds" like I should check it out. nor do i know much about encoding, so here's a kinda ignorant question: a couple of posts have said 64bit WMA >= 128 Mp3... can WMA be encoded at 128bit or higher? and does the sound integrity get better on a 1:1 ratio (128bit WMA = 256bit MP3) or is there a distinct limit to compressing the data into these formats that only let it go up to 196bit (the highest i've ever seen MP3's on Napster). i dunno what i'm talking about, geez. i guess i should go read a resource or something, but i'll drop this question anyway, if anyone wants to answer. good post, btw... interesting product!

So if the AVC and Rio is the same player, why would anyone buy the rio when it's $30 more???

My understanding is that none of these players will handle anything beyond 224 Kbps. If you VBR, that is a problem. Anybody have more info on that?

Fraggle,

yes WMA can be encoded higher than 96kbps, the highest I ever encode is at 192 kbps.

Regards to mp3s, the highest I did was 320kbps, and for a non-audiophile like me, a 320kbps mp3 or 192kbps wma sounds cd quality to me,
But then you can't store that a large amount of mp3 on your mp3 player.
