I've been REALLY happy with my WD 800JB, and I'm usually brutal on HD's. This thing is quiet, and completely kicks a Baracuda's arse. My friend got a Baracuda, and while inaudible even when you're a few inches away from it - that silence means slow seeks. Which kills performance.

The WD drive is absolutely quiet once it's in your case, and it is mad fast.

I am EXTREMELY tough on my hard drives. When I sleep (for like 10 hours) its working the whole time encoding MY movies into divx in a job. During the day I surf AT and play games so that its offtime.

um since when did seagate make a cuda that was loud? my understanding is that the drive is utterly noisles (unless your ear is on the frigging thing).

I am not a noise nazi so no I really dont care if it sounded like a tornado. I just want a good reliable FAST drive.

My point was of priority, not that they are loud. If, like me, a loud drive is a definite bad thing, the Seagate is the way to go. But the Caviar still beats it in performance, even if the new 7200.7 drives has gotten very close to the WD SE drives.

Seagate has fluid bearings, JB has ball bearings. My main concern is that *some* of the JBs go banshee eventually (or even immediately). With fluid bearings, the Seagate should start quiet and stay quiet. Considering you intend to run it overnight a lot, the fluid bearings may age more gracefully. I can see both sides of the issue, and it's not a given that the JB will develop noise, but certainly something that gets commented on once in a while. Good luck deciding

I do wonder what goes on there...
Within 200 feet are 5 WD SE JB drives.
All get near constant use and are never spun down w/ power saving stuff. None are any louder than when they were new. In fact, the newest my neighbor doesn't like because he can't hear the HD seeking .
Not that quiet, but I must wonder if people are letting the drives heat up too much (HDs need an inch above and below and moving air, IMO--w/ Enlighst and Evercases mostly in use, airflow is not a problem)...no problems yet, w/ SEs here, and I typically recommend only Caviars and none have yet had nor seen any problems.
I have seen quite a few case pics posted here and other forums where several drives are right up against one another cluttered in the drive cages--not good.

Go with the WD for the 8mb cache(faster) and the three year warranty(longer than Seagate) plus its more popular so will hold a bit more interest(more interest & money) down the road when you sell.

My (baised) opinion would be the WD, I have two of them and they are lurvely - nice and quiet and fast as heck and supplied with a 3 year warrenty. Can't speak for the Seagate.

I never used a segate drive, however I know of people who had and liked them. However im a pure WD fan. I'm loving my raptor and my WD800JB. Both silent and fast, so I see no reason to get a segate drive as well.

WD, only because it carries a 3 year warranty, and the price is about the same.

Seagate makes great drives though ... so they are both good options
