Update: specs are below, price is $1000. Not really hot - I expected a better price from Aldis.

Okay, the details:

Aldi's Foods, starting August 2nd
They've had a couple of great PC deals in the past on the Medion brand - top of the line name-brand components inside. Medion is a big name in Europe, not in the US yet.

Medion notebook:
Pentium M processor 705 - 1MB L2 cache, 400 MHz FSB, 1.5 GHz
Wireless LAN IEE 802.11 g/b
855 GM chipset with integrated 32-bit 2D/3D graphics
15" TFT Display 1024x768
6.1 pounds
1.5 inches thick
40GB Toshiba hard drive
256 MB DDR
DVD/DC-RW coombo 8-24-10-24
stereo speakers built in
WinXp Sp1
Works 7.0
Nero, etc.
PCMCIA type II slot
4 USB 2.0
VGA out
TV out
12 month support
etc.

If you have a local Aldi's, you can grab an ad for this that they were handing out (just got groceries)
Based on their previous deals for PC's, I'm going to watch this one closely - in the market for a new computer and a notebook may be ideal. People have speculated in the past on the prices and been pretty close, so I'll let the speculation commence.

I can't find a direct link online to anything about the notebook...
medion's site
aldi's site

edit: link on medion's site for the lappy, unfortunately their link for more info on it goes nowhere. I sent their webmaster a notice of this, but nothing yet.

Chunkee... you sure about that? Or is that speculation? Their PC's that they had last year sold for a few hundred less than the going prices for PC's with similar specs... in fact, IIRC, someone figured out that even with the best hot deals for the components, you wouldn't have been able to put together a system for less.

Someone, being Aldi's - one of the cheapest grocery stores that I've ever shopped at, I find it difficult to believe they'd have an item for $1000.

Have to note the irony here, when the entire premise of the original post is comprised mostly of rampant speculation (save the product, and the store name itself). Could be likened to stating any electronics retailer may have a specific product on sale in the coming weeks.

Unfortunately, at the moment with the limited information in hand, this seems less of a "Hot Deal" and more along the lines of a "Hot Rumor".

The last time I saw a Medion laptop deal at Aldi's it was not extremely low priced as it was about $1500, but is was very well loaded like the one you describe is. So, it was a relative bargain in that a similarlly loaded "other" brand would probably have run $400 more at least.

As to the earlier statement that Aldi's Never has inexpensive electronics, that is just plain wrong ... they recently had a card reader that could read about every type of card for $9.99 and just had a pair of 7 mile range walkie-talkies for $29.99 if I remember right ... and they recently had a multi-meg digital camera cheaper than any around. I did not get there the first few days and missed them all because they sold out so fast.

I'm not "speculating" that it will be a hot deal... I'm only speculating what the final price will be. I'm 95% certain that it WILL be a hot deal, based on history. If I had to guess, I'd say about $400 less than a similarly configured Dell.

In the past, they have had the card readers at incredibly low prices, a DVD recorder (like a VCR) for a couple hundred less than any other decent one that I could find, and a couple of smoking hot deals on desktops.

Oh, and since this is brought up in every Aldi's thread, I'll get it out of the way now.
Aldi's is not a small mom&pop chain... It's friggin huge. It's presence is growing in the USA, but it is very well established in Europe.
Aldi's is kinda like a Wal-Mart, only cheaper and without frills. (they cut costs by not hiring baggers, charging for any bags you want to use (10 cents), stocking the store is minimal - they just open the big case boxes and leave them stacked - no shelves. You can take all the boxes you want and "box" your food instead, rather than bagging it. Kinda like at BJ's (and, I suspect, Sam's club)

Aldi's accepts only cash and debit cards. This is to further reduce their own costs since they have to pay 1.5 to 3% on credit card purchases. Since they're primarily a grocery chain where they probably only make about 3cents on the dollar, this policy makes sense.

Most/all of the stuff they sell is just rebadged name brands. (example: IIRC their cereal is Kelloggs - there is absolutely no difference between their apple o's and Kellog's apple jacks)

Apparently what they've done to offer great prices on electronics in the past is to focus on just one model of PC or laptop or whatever and order a ton of them.

Medion has had fantastic reviews on all the reviews I've checked for other products in the past.

I agree, there was an Aldi's near my place in NC and now my place in MD. They have great prices, and the Medion brand is good. I bought a Medion Portable DVD player that was far superior to my Polaroid DVD player in quality, and the price was $50 less.

I am beginnig to think this is all speculation cause Aldi's site has the deals for this and next week up and there is no laptop. But, the most obvious time for this to come out would be when school supplies, etc. are being purchased nearer when school begins.

Well, when school begins, perhaps you should attend and pay more attention.
Specifically with your reading skills.

If you happen to read the original post, it says: Starting August 2nd.
I already have a big 4 page brochure from Aldis about this notebook. I assure you, it is NOT speculation.

If you look at Aldi's site, you'll notice this week's ad is for July 19, next weeks ad says its for July 26.
Now, go to a calendar, start counting ahead 1 week from July 26 on your fingers, and you'll see that it's August 2nd. Aldi's site doesn't have the ad online yet for August 2nd.

edit: Furthermore, if you clicked the medion link and followed it, you'd see the notebook listed as "coming August 2nd"

Smart@ss, all the earlier posts had indicated this was speculation till it actually shows up, which it has not. There is no reason to be so upset since YOU are not being challenged. Just because Medion has it on it's site does not mean anything rerlated to Aldi's. I have a PhD and will put my reading skills up against yours any day. All I was saying was that it might come up closer to school since that's when there will be the greatest market. You count days and you will find that Aug. 15 is only 6 days after the end of the deal if they have it the 2nd. Gee, seems like that is just what I said, idiot that I am.

I have no idea how you got a 4 page brocure since the local Aldi manager told me they don't even know what will come up or when it will, but we are in a small market.

Sorry if I was too vocal above, but your post was totally and unnecessarily nasty. Truce please,

I followed Medion's link to find retailers and it went directly to Aldi's and no other so the deal must be happening then. Too bad they give no details.

Went by Aldis a couple of days ago and there is a poster saying this laptop is coming out August 2, I think. No price on there, though.

Must... get... price... confirmation...

Friend in Detroit is looking to buy a laptop, and this would fit the bill if the price is reasonable. And I'd think about upgrading myself if the price is right.

maybe I'm biased but it seems that an Emachines A64 + Ati9600 for $250 more than this Medion after MIR is so much better on every spec. Only 1 pound more.
