<< Does it Let you fdisk and reuse it? can you get a prompt on it at least? sorry to hear that man, I hope it wasn't do to oc'ing. >>

Nothing. I tried fdisk but it says it cannot access the drive. Oh well, there was nothing I couldn't live without on that drive. I'm just awaiting a reponse from Western Digital now. I'm just using another backup 20gb WD now. I don't know why I have so many HD's... oh wait, yes I do. It's because of that damned Hot Deals forum.

I'm running at stock speed and stock voltage now because of my paranoia. hehehe. I'll probably up it again when those bad boy games come out. Unreal 2, SOF2, and all that good stuff.

How do I get access to the 3:4 option? If I go any bus speed above 132 the menu resets to auto (can't select 3:4) on my p2b266. Running bios 1005. Any help would be appreciated. So far, I can only go to 145 bus speed using auto and nornal optimization (no turbo) settings. Any help would be appreciated.

Anyone know why I don't see the 3:4 setting in the memory setup? I have it at 140 FSB, but there is absolutelty not setting for 3:$ memory only 1:! and auto. My motherboard is the p4b266.

Well you talked me into it. Just ordered the 1.6a (for $158.65 shipped) from Multiwave and the P4B266 from Gateway ($150.90 shipped for the mobo and an HP cartridge absolutely rocks). Hope I get the great results I've been seeing here! Thanks for all the info cuz I'm sure I'll be reading it again when everything arrives.

The cpu/mem 3:4 divider on p4b266 is only an option below 133x. Once you hit 133x or above, the divider stays at 1:1.

UPDATE:

I got mine running the 150fsb but I have a couple questions about the voltage settings.

ASUS P4B266 Retail
2x256 Mushkin pc2700
CPU Vcore: 1.7V
DDR voltage: 2.6V
Turbo1 mode
Retail fan

are these settings safe?
what is considered too hot?

thanks guys.
robert.

edit: ok this sucks. my comp reset on me which means it's not stable
new question:
did it reset b/c the voltage needs to be pushed up? or is this a heating issue?

i have a 1.6a & MSI 645 Ultra

i can run it 100% stable @ 133x16, 2.13Ghz 1.5v stock cooler.

i can run it stable at higher speeds and voltage with stock cooler, but the CPU cannot handle it for long and will die quickly, do not up the voltage with the stock cooler. instead, get a volcano 7+, is has a c/w of .30 on 100Watts, so it is easily 50% better than the stock cooler.

with a volcano 7+, i felt comfortable to up voltage to 1.6v, with this i can run at 2.67Ghz, 166x16. This seams 100% stable, i looped 3dmark2001se 50 times and it did not crash, my radeon8500 OEM @ 280/280 threw out 10987 @ 2.67Ghz. Also chip run significantly faster @ 2.2Ghz than a stock 2.2ghz p4, 150x16 works great and with ram @ 150mhz CAS2 you get better performance than 166 CAS2.5

@ 2.4Ghz, 16x150 CAS 2 RAM, 1.6v Volcano 7+, 3dmark2001SE does 11026.

if you can get some memory that will do 166mhz @ CAS 2, that would be great, but i sugest going just as high as your ram will do @ CAS2. unless of coarse you just want MHz!

good luck to you all, happy overclock.

p.s. i have 4 case fans, all 80mm NMB, one faces straight down on CPU from side, own sucks air out the top, one sucks air out the back, and one sucks air in the front. My room is about 72 degrees F.

I have an Abit TH7-II RAID board, P4 1.6a Northie, and so far with standard heatsink and fan, BIOS is reporting that it's only getting 1.55v at the 1.65 setting, but so far a FSB of 140mhz, RDRAM is at 420mhz, AGP/PCI fixed. That is 2.247ghz. I am using Corsair high density RDRAM, 2 x 256meg, ATI Radeon 8500, 2 x 60gig IBM 7200rpm drives. I did take that rubber thing off and put Arctic Silver paste on instead for the standard heatsink. Next, I need some voltage mods and a better hsf.

Just got my 1.6a from Googlegear.

It is a Costa Rica.

I will be testing it with a p4b266c and will post the result as soon as I get memory.

I was planning on ordering Crucial 256mb DDR memory for $83 online, but saw advertisement in local shops selling Micron for $73. Is Crucial and Micron memory EXACTLY the same? I know their both made by Micron, but is Crucial memory Micron's "premium" memory and better than ordinary Micron memory? Anyone know? thanks

Didnt mention this before but mine is a costa rican CPU and look what I hit
Asus p4b266-C with P4 1.6a @ 2.4 (16x150) stock cooling no voltage bumps
Havent tried higher yet would like better thermal paste and cooler

Also noticed some other things so far.....

I have both USB ports being used in back and I have a front mounted 2-port usb that I use for one oter game controller and absolutely no problems.

I also have a Western Digital 40gb 7200 RPM drive taht I have been using since I got this setp (and for 1 year previous to that in a overclocked amd system) and my hard drives have not died yet from Faster FSB speeds

I have crucial pc 2100 memory tat I got for my ECS K7S5A board that right now on the 150mhz fsb is running 1:1 2t 2t 2t 6t default voltage

I have system running at normal instead of turbo1 or 2...3dmark scores are a slight bit higher with normal on.

Ok fellas I need your assistance.

I got my P4B266 and 1.6A yesterday. I have it all installed and it seems to run fine at stock speed but it will not o/c even 1 MHz w/o locking up in windows XP within a few minutes - sometimes it won't even finish loading XP. I have tried everything I can think of but it won't budge. I am making changes using the bios and not the dip switches. My setup is listed below. Also whats even stranger is that the system will lock up faster when I have my mouse plugged into the PS2 port than it will when its plugged into the USB ports. I have tried upping the voltage, using the Turbo 1 setting and just about everything else I see here and still no luck.

Asus P4B266
1.6A with stock hs/fan but added AS3 to it
512MB of Infineon DDR PC2100 Ram (have also tried some Crucial PC2100)
ATI Radeon 8500
Adaptec 29160 SCSI Card
Intel 10/100 NIC
Hollywood + Card
Firewire Card
18gb U160 10,000 RPM IBM Hard Drive
100gb Maxtor IDE drive
Nakamichi 5 disc SCSI changer
Yamaha 16x10x40 SCSI CDRW
Pioneer SCSI DVD Rom
Enermax 430 Watt Power Suppply
utilizing the onboard sound and USB 2.0 enabled

Some odd things I noticed last night. When the systems is "trying to hang up" the Pioneer/Yamaha/Nakamichi CD roms are all acting like they are being accessed and Windows just sits there.

Could this mean that my SCSI card is holding things back?

Another interesting note is that when I can get into Windows at 133FSB and rune prime 95 for a few minutes (about 10 total) the temp listed under the ASUS probe never goes higher than 40-42. I am not sure whats limiting me here I have removed all items from the system but the SCSI card with just the hard drive attached and the video card and performance is still the same.

Should I be o/c via the dipswitches or changes in the bios??

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Just for the record this is not the first time I have ever o/c a system.

Thanks

Greg

It's the Onboard sound. Disable it and you should be good to go. Apparently a many p4b266 folks are having the same issue ( myself included) What I did notice is that if I have my old sound card in there and I enable the onboard it seems to work just fine, but wihtout it XP pukes upon playing the logon sound. I don't know if Asus is addressing this issue.

Good luck!

<< I dont see why the country that makes the chip matters? its all standardrized isnt it? >>

I guess you're being sarcastic...if not:

The country doesn't matter but the batch could make a big difference. Everyone is looking at each other's OC numbers, taking note of what works and trying to increase the odds of a high OC, by getting a good chip, mobo and ram.

Somewhere a second hand account of an Intel insider said that certain 1.6A chips concievably could have passed the tests to sell at 2.2Ghz, but the sales/marketing folks needed more 1.6A's to fill demand, so they just marked them down. IF that's true, it would seem like certain batches from the same factory could be a bunch of marked down 2.2 chips, while another batch (or a batch from another country) could actually be only 1.6 rated chips (only passing the 1.6 tests)

Well here is the good news. Seems like it must have been a Windows XP thing as I did a new install of XP and she is running 16x150 2.4 Ghz at 1.575 w/o a glitch. She is running a tad warmer than I would like (47C idle 58C full load prime95) but the alpha I have on the way should alleviate that issue for me.

BTW my chip and board came from googlegear and it is a Costa Rican chip. I will shoot for more later.

Thanks

Yes I have USB 2.0 and onboard sound all enabled and its working just fine.

It has to have been old AMD drivers or something causing trouble, because its been running fine since I did that. Later tonight I will install some games and other programs and see if I can bog it down some and stress the system some more. THe chip may do more but I am totally happy with 2.4 Ghz for $150!!!

Greg,

I'm curious about your PCI slot configuration, do you have all of your slots filled up? I can't get my onboard sound to work at all. will just crash upon XP's logon theme sound.

I have a dilemma - I just bought the 1.6 and P4s333. I now need memory. According to this thread, seems like everyone is using Crucial and a total of 512mb. Will I still be able to get the same results (133 fsb) w/ 256(yes I am new to this oc'ing stuff). Right now i cannot justify paying 180.00 for memory that I have a feeling will drop in price a few months from now. In which I can just order another stick of 256. Any help on this would greatly appreciated. I need to make my decision by today. Thanks

PlatinumGold, Thank you. Will 256 suffice or do i need 512 to get the results everyone is getting?
