<< Some report Gigabyte tech. is very bad. so be carefull! >>

Gigabyte makes board of the utmost stability. Furthermore, Tom's Hardware used a Gigabyte board for their 3GHz P4A overclock.

The Gigabyte better be stable because it won't boot/reboot correctly if you're OC'ed you have to restart. I RMA'd mine back to Newegg and got a P4B266. Just started playing with it. At least it boots/reboots correctly.

Called Gigabyte tech support about the no reboot/boot issue and the guy told me "well, just don't overclock it'. Asked about a BIOS fix, he said "...won't be anything soon because it's Chinese New Year in Taiwan and they won't be doing any work over there for a while"

What wonderful tech support. Up yours, Gigabyte...you can eat your mobo.

Dang Daovonnaex I just looked at your rigs, and that's a very nice "farm" you have there! How about giving Team Anandtech's ECCp challenge some help getting 2nd place back. All the info you need can be found on the
Team Anandtech FAQs . We'd sure loved to have you on the TeAm

<< p4s333-m
this is not the mb you want to buy

under overclocking in the manual
fsb 100-166
fsb/mem ratio

thats it no voltage

M stands for Must be returned
>>

lemcc: Any news on that P4S333-M? If you haven't returned it yet, you might try doing the wire/pin trick to force a higher voltage.

I used to be leaning towards the microATX version over the regular P4S333 but without voltage tweaks the board is virtually neutered.

My GA-8SRX reboots fine at 150 FSB.
I thought the whole idea of overclocking was to save $.
Thats why I bought a $80 MB instead of a $150 MB and
why I bought a 1.6a instead of a 2.0 or higher and use the stock heatsink.
I didn't need raid, already have 5.1 soundcard.
My only problem with this board so far is the temp monitor
is unreliable, but temps don't seem to be a problem with these
setups, I'm not too worried.
I might be able to tweak a little more out of this setup, but
I'm perfectly happy to have 2.4Ghz.

Anyone know whether the Swiftech MC462A will work with the P4 1.6a and the ASUS P4B266? I've Been an AMD-Head for the past year or so.

Sorry, just answered my own question....with a little research... The P4B266 has a socket 478 PGA, thus the Swiftech MCX478 would be the only compatible HS from Swiftech.

<< I don't have a P4 1.6A, I bought a P4 2.0A instead (I avoided the P4 2.2A b/c I wanted to reach higher fsb speeds). Here's a useful tip if you want to go extreme: remove the heat spreader. Your temps will drop, and then you can overclock higher. If you're worried about damage the core, make a shim. >>

I have a p4 1.6 (not "A") it overclocked some but wasnt stable even at 1.8ghz , Q3 and 3dmark 2k1 would lock or quit, but I was able to run sandra benchmarks and when it was at 2.2ghz it beat everything else in the comparrison lists, also got memory bandwidth benchmarks of 2738mbps with my pc2700 memory my 1.6a should be here on monday........................... <a target=new class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://home.cox.rr.com/xslackerx/mem2133oc.jpg">link to a sandra memory benchmark pic, this one is at 2400mbps, I didnt take a screenshot of the 2738mbps, but I will when my northwood gets here

I am guessing it would be the same as using pc133 on a pc100 chipset, the memory is rated to run at higher bus speed, pc2700 is supposed to run at 166mhz for 333mhz ddr, so if you want to go to a 150mhz cpu fsb and your memory is set to run at the same bus speed as the cpu then it would also be at 150mhz which would be below its rated limit, but most components can run at speeds higher than they are rated for, like the 1.6a

I just ordered a 1.8A, P4B266-C, and 1x256M of OCZ PC3000 from Newegg too! I also have an X15 SCSI drive with a Tekram DC390U3W controller. Should I worry about my SCSI set-up if I OC too much??

update: I'm stable @ 2.24 (140 FSB, 1.5v), anything higher and I get random reboots and lockups. The reboots and lockups appear not to be heat related, I'm sure it's a limitation of the MB or RAM (Abit BD7,Crucial 2100). I was considering getting the ASUS but @ 2.2GHz, I'm satisfied. My max temps after a few intense games of quake 3 are in the 39-41 C range so I think my temp situation is under control (I do have a sunflower on the way though).
In conclusion: Other than my not so brilliant choice of motherboards, I am happy as a clam with this setup. My old setup was a Dual P3 650 which I've put to use as a burner box/fileserver and I hope to do dual XEONS later this year (dual CPU's flat out rock). I'm glad I waited for Intel to step back up to the plate as I was avoiding AMD/VIA like the plague (not an AMD flame, I simply prefer Intel).

nvektus-

I have the P4B266 and it has a good feature for overclocking that I didnt know about until after I got it. Not only does it run a 133 MHz FSB with 33MHz PCI (the standard) but it also runs the PCI clock @ 31 MHz when you set the FSB to 125 MHz (instead of being way out of spec). I'm running on 125 MHz FSB right now so my 1.8A is @ 2.25 GHz. It runs 133 MHz FSB for 2.4 GHz pretty stable @ 1.625 volts, but it just feels more solid @ 2.25 right now (like my old P3 733 on a CUSL2 before- like a rock). So overclocking the FSB to 125 MHz or 133 MHz wouldn't affect a SCSI controller at all (and 125 MHz actually underclocks the PCI a bit).

If you're planning on going above 133MHz FSB, well... good luck to you. I can't get any level of stability over 133 really, nor do I really want to go there. a 600 MHz overclock is definately as far as I need to go!

Hope this helps!

I got the same board as you. It runs rock solid and stable at 133 FSB oc's a 1.6a to 2.13 Ghz. How can you tell the speed of you PCI/AGP? I want to know if mine is locked at 33 or if it's out of spec. How do you enalbe that feature in the p4b266? Let me know, thanks!

Anyone have problems with USB on the P4S333?? System hangs on boot up if anything is plugged into the USB slots..unplug them and all is well. They work fine in Windows..I've updated BIOS to 1003 but problem still persists...This is happening at default settings not just when overclocked. I have not tried the add on USB header yet.

BTW, my 1.6a costa rican runs 133 at default voltage on this board. have not tried higher yet but looks promising.

I am brand new to the PC building/OC..but here is my story so far:
Bought a P4B266-C and 1.6 A from Newegg.com $277 shipped.
Bought/Ordered 2 Sticks of 256 MB DDR ram from Circuit City $39/per...got PC2100 PNY "REGISTERED" Memory (normally $139 per stick!!!)

Tried to put the new MB into my old (well from last april) Dell PIII 1Ghz case, and found the Power Supplhy wa sonly 200 Watt (ASUS reccomends atleast 230W) And the front case power button connectors were not compatable. So I bought a cheap case from a local vender with 300 Watt PS...$49.

Put it all together, loaded up Win98 and changed the FSB from 100 Mghz to 133 Mghz in the bios(Setup)...BINGO! 2.1333 Ghz! No problem...@ 1.5 V.

I will push it more later after I get the Operating System backed up.

Fixed..

It is my Powered USB hub.sort of..Hub is plugged inot the Herc Game Theater HUB, which is plugged into the mob..All are self powered.. if I unplug my CF reader from the powered hub,
system boots...Since that doesn't NEED to be plugged in all the time its
acceptable workaround for now..maybe its the Power Supply but ts rated to
provide 2 Amps to the +5vsb and 10a to the 12v so it should be more than
adequate.
Strange its the powered hub, I'd assume devices plugged into it wouldn't
affect the mobo at all...

What batch is your chip, and have you tried going any higher? I got a A709 Costa Rica from NewEgg last week, but they shipped my board (P4S333) late. It should be here any minute (damn FedEx). Just curous to see if it can do 140-150 like most of the Malaysia chips on the P4B266 I've been seeing.

Come on FedEx!!!
