P4B266
1.6A @ 2.25
Crucial 256Mb PC2100

I had 512Mb in my last system, I can't tell any difference. Your reasoning is exactly what mine was...Ram prices will drop eventually, and when they do I'll grab another stick. I think I may try a stick of some PC2700 and try to run the mem@370Mhz(140fsb, 4/3 divider)

<< I have a dilemma - I just bought the 1.6 and P4s333. I now need memory. According to this thread, seems like everyone is using Crucial and a total of 512mb. Will I still be able to get the same results (133 fsb) w/ 256(yes I am new to this oc'ing stuff). Right now i cannot justify paying 180.00 for memory that I have a feeling will drop in price a few months from now. In which I can just order another stick of 256. Any help on this would greatly appreciated. I need to make my decision by today. Thanks >>

I guess I lucked out. When I got my syem the price for 512 Crucial was $140. I bit my tongue and bought htinking it was too expensive. Now that I look at it, I'm glad I did buy it. Who knows, in a month I might regret it. But IMO, you're better off getting one stick of 512, becuase if you have multiple stick you never know one may no OC as well as the other and it may hold back your system. just a thought.

I just got my northwood setup...but i have a question. I have the Asus -c board from mwave, with the retail 1.6a, and kingston 2100 ram. I tried running 133x16 but when i reboots my usb flashes (i have a microsoft optical and the bottom just flashes). WHat's my problem? I'm not to familiar with these new boards and ram.

Currently running 1.6a@2ghz

Trader05 - plug in the mouse by way of the ps2 port and not usb, that should fix the situation

Finally set up my new setup:

P4 1.8a -> 2.4ghz
Asus p4s333
Samsung 256mb PC2700 stick

I'm running at FSB of 533 and MEM at 166x2 and my sisandra memory scores beat the PC800! I however had to switch the onboard jumper to add the extra 0.2v to the cpu and also in the bios had to set the voltage to 1.625v. Some reason without the jumper trick I dont think the bios voltage options were making a difference.

Just figured I'd post my results..

I guess I got lucky, but I'm now running stable at 2.4GHz now, at least with the Prime95 test.. without even a hiccup, and with relatively low temps and low Vcore. From what I have seen, there are a couple of others here with this same batch. All of which seem to be reporting decent stable OC speeds.

Specs:
P4 1.6a Costa Rica, Batch 3147-682 .. bought from googlegear.com
Stock HSF with original thermal pad
Asus p4b266-c
Micron 256meg DDR PC2100
Enermax 365w P4 PS
Western Digital 60gig 7200 ATA/100
Pioneer DVD-106
ATI AIW Radeon 7500
SBLive! DE 5.1
DLink dfe-530tx nic
Win XP Pro

16x150
1.55v
Turbo 1

Temps: 34-36c idle, and 46-48c loaded (Prime95)

I did a gradual overclock, over the course of 2-3 days to get the system where it is now. It involved burning in for 24hrs at 1.6GHz, then going up from there with 10-12hr tests at each multiplier change. I originally had a 250W Sparkle PS, but found that once I hit 16x140, the voltages started dropping and were becoming not as stable as I like. So, I picked up the Enermax and it has been great so far.

This machine is a beast.. I am thoroughly impressed with the results so far. I may try to bump it up some more to see just how fast it will go before I settle on a speed I am comfortable running.

Thanks for all the info guys, I'm sure I'll be posting more now.

I might as well throw my hat in the ring, especially since the majority of people here seem to be using DDR boards.

P4 1.6a@2.48742, 1.75v, idle@45c, full@55c
Abit TH7II-RAID
2x 256MB Samsung RDRAM (double-sided), running at 3/4, 3.2GB/s in Sandra

The rest of the stuff doesn't really matter. I've been very pleased with the performance though, and it's completely stable. Here's a detailed thread at the Tom's Hardware forums, if anyone's interested.

well, I put my 1.6a back to 1.6. I got sick of my system rebooting whenever I was playing wolfenstein or il2 sturm demo. worked fine for every other game or app when I had it at 2.13. guess wolf doesnt like oc'd systems, or mine at least. the times ive played it since, no lockups. of course, i havent had a long session since, so who knows. at full load, mbm shows my temp around 48 - 50, idle, betwee 39-43. this is using the asus(cusl2) or whatever setting. I can play MOH for hours and hours and it runs great. I might check out that volcano 7+ cooler and see if that helps. I tried just about every setting in bios and am just tired of messing around with it. its strange, but for some reason, when I had my P3 800e at 920, deus ex would lock up, but all other games ran fine, even UT, but at 900, deus ex was fine. weird how some games can handle oc'ing and some can't, at least in my experiences.

forgot to mention, when it rebooted after locking up wolf, I would go into bios and look at cpu temp, and it was on 40. now how can this be? if it locked up because of heat, it had to be over 50 and it wouldnt cool down that fast. weird

Just got my 1.6a Mwave bundle in last night. Haven't had chance to put it together yet.

I guess you all take it for granted but I was really surprised to see the tiny size of the CPU! :Q

Specs:
P4 1.6a Costa Rica, Batch 3139A707-0880
Retail HS/Fan
Asus P4B266-c
Mushkin 256meg DDR PC2700
Antec 300W
Maxtor 30gig 7200 ATA/100
Voodoo 3 3000
SBLive! 5.1
3Com 3C59x NIC

Waiting for the PS, HD, vid card, etc., to come in, although I guess I could temporarily use my XP 1900's stuff to see what it'll do.

finally got a chance to put my system together. so here are the details and how it went.

Asus P4B266-C
1.6a (malay chip - for those who care)
256 MB of PC2100 Samsung DDR Ram
(all three were purchased from googlegear - those bastards ship fast! )
Visiontek GF3 Ti200
Tekram Scsi card
Hercules Game Theatre XP
ATI TV Wonder PCI
Intel 10/100 NIC

installed xp at stock speed
went to (133x16 at 1.5v) 2128mhz - ran some prime, got a score of 6786 in 3d Mark 2001 SE
went to (140x16 at 1.65v) 2240mhz - ran some prime, got a scoe of 6869 in 3d Mark 2001 SE
tried (150x16 at 1.65) 2400 - would not post
bumped voltage to 1.70 - would not post
tried (145x16 at 1.70) 2320mhz - posted, tried to go into xp, blue screened.
went back to 2240.

so, my new playbox is 1.6a at 2.24. not too shabby. i'm happy with it anyways. thanks for all the great info guys!

I just got my P4B-266C and the 1.6a from NewEgg. So far I haven't had the best of luck getting to the same speeds you guys are getting. I ran it most of today at the standard 16x100 and got everything setup and loaded. Installed the new VisionTek Ti4600 GF4 and a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card and the Netgear TA-310x network card using Win XP home edition. I set the jumper on the motherboard for the V-core voltage and everything else is set to use the bios settings. I went right to 133 at the standard voltage and it would not even boot. I set the cpu/memory ratio to 1:1. The optimization mode was set to Turbo 1. Ram is Crucial DDR 2100 set at 2T,2T,2T,5T. I was finally able to get it to boot up and in Windows at 129 fsb but it locked up after about 30 minutes of use. I got it to work pretty stable at 124 fsb for 1.98, standard voltage. I've gone up to 1.6 on the voltage and still could not get to 133fsb. Is there anything I'm missing in the bios setup? Should I change the jumper for the ram voltage? It's on the standard 2.5v now. Any other ideas would sure be appreciated. If I left out any information let me know and I'll post more.
Thanks
Jim

Whohoo!!! Got to 2.4GHz at 1.7V with Prime95 and Seti@Home running overnight with NO problems, so I consider it 100% stable, wow! I always run 3DMark 2001 for stability, but the damn infinite loop error doesn't make things easy on me, so I had to resort to Prime 95 and SETI@Home running at the same time, but I don't regret it because I know I can throw anything at this rig and it will fly I won't try any more, because at 150MHz FSB my hard drives and everything is out of specs, so I don't want to lose some crucial data.

i dunno if this fix really works or not but supposedly the newest version of nvmax has a fix for the infinite loop error

1.6a @ 2820 avc sunflower cooler...1.8v voltage, 36c idle/50c load and the 3dmark scores to prove it .. runs the sisoft sandra burn in test for 10 loops but craps out in quake as soon as temp hits 47c (i think i need better cooling or something)

this is my first overclock since my p3 450 doing 600Mhz...seems like i'm back in the thick of things w00t

now thats a huge woody..maybe because my name is the hnic

Well, after about 2 weeks of experimenting with this board and chip, P4B266 and 2.0a NW, I stopped at the magical number of 2667 and stepped it down to 2640 (132*20) with max memory settings, at 133 bus, the 3:4 divider gets fixed to 1:1, so the memory scores goes into the toilet, currently running the 1006 beta bios that allows more voltage( currently running at 2.0v) with a AVC Sunflower with AS2, temps are at 36C Idle, 56C Full Load. Can't wait for a new bios so that maybe I could get some more out of this chip, but the loss of memory points is not worth the added bus speed that 133+ gives you, 132 hz seems to be the magic number as of now.

Jim

PS: I noticed that it was only about the 1.6a after I posted this, so sorry if it doesn't apply to some people!

Check out my comments from a few posts back. I had my P4B266c and 1.6a running at 124fsb @ 1.98 till last night when it started locking up again. I finally put everything back to default. I don't know what is going on. Any ideas out there. Read my previous post and tell me if I'm missing something. I'm going to pull the heatsink off tonight and just recheck everything. Should I be changing the memory voltage jumper? Any help wouuld be appreciated.....
Thanks
Jim
