Consider yourself lucky, that truly is a discounted ticket price you got! I got off with a warning a few weeks ago for doing 31 mph in a 20 mph school zone which is an automatic no questions asked $336.00 fine.

Doing 30 mph over the posted speed limit is a mandatory reckless driving charge in Washington state and a 6 month license suspension is not uncommon with fines nearly twice the $505.00 you received, first offense or not.

You didnt get off easy? What kinda speed zone were you in? I think just about anywhere in illinois 102mph would get me arrested and my car impounded. Makes me think $500 is nothing.

i got a ticket for doing 86 on a 65mph zone. (heh, was doing 100 on some parts) ill have to pay a fine for $95 soon but would this go off my record or something if i goto a driving school ?

never got a ticket in my 7 years of driving so i dont know how it works. so what happens after i plead guilty and pay the fine?

edit-- hmm just read the ticket again and it says fine of $95 for speed in excess of 20 mph but less then 35 mph over the speed limit. so i missed the mark by 2 mph. should i still plead guilty??

Yeah, they passed a similar law in MI in the past few years. Do past 100, and kiss your license goodbye.

Why didn't you fight it? You had nothing to lose.

TO EVERYONE: If you live in CA, and you get a 100+ mph ticket, you have NOTHING to lose by fighting it. 100+ is a violation with 2 points and as such, you are not eligible for traffic school. You can either pay the huge bail, pay increased insurance fees and have the 2 points on your record or you can fight it and have a chance of beating it.

I hear that to fight these tickets, the best way is to set a court date, but repeatedly request for continuances. Drag it out. Drag it out for years if you can. Then finally come in. By then the cop don't give a sh!t anymore.

I got a ticket going from LA to Davis a little over a year ago (last winter). As with everybody else, I was on the 5 cruising around 100, with some bursts to 120 or so well this black benz is going really fast, so i decide to tail it. Then this green 4runner pulls into my lane, flashes his hazards, then makes some gesture with his hands (I'm assuming it was imitating cop lights, but it looked like he was whirling a lasso- he even had a cowboy hat on). Being my stupid self, I ignored this warning, failing to notice this huge CB antenna or something sticking out from on top of this 4runner. I pull around, and needless to say, a few minutes later, I see a CHP patrol car behind me. By the time I see him, I'm already down to around 70mph, but he pulls me over anyway. I see another patrol car zoom past me, going for the black Benz that I was tailing. Over the P.A., the officer tells me to go forward slowly on the side until I pull up to the black car. After a few minutes, he gets out and comes up on my passenger side. He asks me how fast I was going, and I said I didn't know- he said I was going 110. I don't know how far away he was pacing me, but I was probably going that fast at one point or another. He then went up to the black Benz, talked to him for a few minutes, then came back to me and said "I'm gonna do the same thing for you as I did for that guy. I'm putting you down for 100 in a 70 zone so you won't have to serve an injunction." So I guess I got off lucky. This was my first offense in my 3 years of driving. However I was able to take traffic school, online I might add, and 0 points added to my driving record All it costed was a measly $450, including traffic school, if I remember correctly. I was surprised that my parents weren't pissed at me and didn't take away my car

Traffic school costs:
Pay the ticket + court fees + wutever traffic school charges.
Here is a piece of advice a traffic school operator gave me. Hold on to that certificate until almost the deadline. In case you get another ticket, you can say you haven't been to traffic school in 18 months, and they can't check unless you turned this thing in. If it's two different courts, you can get away with going to traffic school more then once in 18 months and not get points on your record.

<< Me: Your honor this is my first offense and I understand that I was wrong is there anyway you can reduce the cost of the ticket because there is no way I can pay for that amount.

Judge: that is a discounted price, you were putting yourself and others in danger. Are you able to pay for this now?
>>

You sound like me, even in court asking if there are any current coupons or deals on that sentence. I can see it now:
Yes, I plead guilty and I know I was driving over 125mph in a 15mph zone, however I'd like to pricematch with Iowa which only charges $1/mph over the speed limit, and I'd like to add coupon code 98909 to get $50 off $200.

I had a friend who once got caught for doing 170(YES One Hundred and Seventy)MPH with a 98 Porsche 911 Turbo. I think he just got a ticket because the cop was really cool, anyways that lucky bastard is still driving on the streets.

You plead NOT GUILTY - Get a court date - 1 week before the date [which is the minimum amount of time you have to give] - Reschedule - Then IF you have to, reschedule again - Long as the long arm of the law doesnt show up, you're free and clear.

Laugh a Lasso.

I seriously thought I had a chance in reducing the amount. People told me to look presentable, so I did by wearing a shirt/tie and slacks. As a matter of fact I was the only one dressed that way amoung 20~ others.

Also I have a coworker who went to court today because he got pulled over and had no insurance. He said that the cost of the ticket should have been around $700+, he got off with $35 YES 35 DOLLARS! He said the judge wanted to help the people out. But he also told em that he was in the marines. He also told me I shouldnt have dressed up because the judge will think that you have money. He also told me I should have plead not guilty, exactly what you folks said.. reschedule the court dates... WHY MUST I FIND THIS OUT NOW??????? OMG

Sorry to hear that. I wish I could help, but once you plead guilty, you are locked in. If it is any consolation, your case will provide reference for myself and many other people.

I caught myself doing 120MPH on my motorbike, comming on to a slip road to a motorway here in England, i had to slow down by 50MPH just to join the traffic! I had to think about the way i rode a bike from that time on.

With carss and bikes these days it's VERY easy to do 30-40MPH over the speed limit and not realise it 100%. On a motorway, my cruising speed is 80-90MPH and lots of cars still go past me..

Just realise, there a far higher prices you could have paid doing that speed.

If I were a cop, I'd probably give any driver in a Porsche 911 turbo a ticket for a max of 99 MPH no matter how fast he was going, unless he was driving 120 in a school zone or rain and snow, or if he was simply a prick. Of course I?d have to remind him to slow the f- down for all these other idiots out there .

On the other hand, there are many cars for which 102 MPH is really pushing it, and that could have been a reason for the cop to give you a ticket in the first place. His honor of the courtroom probably believes that there are no legitimate reasons for going 100+ MPH, and would not accept excuses or explanations anyway. The only thing I might try is to assert that there was no possible way you were going that fast and say you were going 80-90 tops because you needed to use the bathroom or your best friend was about to commit suicide, or something that sounds legit. You then could bring into question the accuracy of this reading. Even a perfectly functioning moving radar can theoretically give an occasional bad reading. This technique would obviously be more effective if you used the same excuse with the cop.

In Minnesota, something like that (a major violation) would affect insurance rate for 5 years. If you?re under 25, you won?t even want to consider owning a car that you need to keep collision on. Your monthly insurance payment will probably be equal to the payment on a nice used car, which is both crazy and depressing. Good luck, and say hello to a string of cheap old used cars.

P.S. I composed this reply approximately 8 hours ago, but I think the forums went down, because I couldn?t access the threads.

This is weird - in Nova Scotia (perhaps all of canada?) violations like speeding tickets in no way affect your insurance - of course our insurance sucks anyway and is very high to begin with vs. the states so I suppose it all works out. I am 23 paying $2k US a year on a '00 Impreza. The only thing on my record was a small accident when I was 16 - and I have reason to believe my insurance would be the same regardless of that.

SO I guess for us the insurance companies just assume we suck and don't even consider whether we have speeding tickets or not.

garfang - you're right 100 mph in a porsche is a hell of a lot safer than 100 in a postal truck

I know a kid who was caught going 140MPH in his dad's souped up Vette. He got off -- completely. When the cop came up to his car, he kept shaking, and when the cop asked him how fast he was going, he just said.. "i...i..don't care." Cop asked him if something was wrong, he says, "I have..rectal bleeding" The cop let him off completely
