The US Government went over the fiscal cliff years ago. We're really just waiting to hit rock bottom.

"The House of Representatives won't vote on any plans to avert the fiscal cliff on Monday, leaders have told members. "

and over the cliff we go... wheee!!!!!!!!!!!
YES, finally it's over!

didnt like Obama caving in on Top2%. Now it's raising taxes on Top1.5%... sheesh. what happened to the line in the sand of $250k and not signing anything if that # is modified?!

Now it's $450k...

and one Senate Dem would have voted against the compromise:
Despite Obama's backing, one leading Senate Democrat warned the deal could run into trouble -- not only from House Republicans who have long opposed any tax increase, but also from liberals in the Senate who oppose allowing more high-income households to escape a tax increase.

"No deal is better than a bad deal, and this looks like a very bad deal the way this is shaping up," Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, said.

this is painfully sadistic, it's like cutting one's own wrist while laughing hysterically all the time knowing the end result is just not gonna be good for anyone.

Its all so the Republicans can say, "see we didn't raise taxes" because once we cliff dive they can then pass a bill and say, "see we cut your taxes"

The Republican Party is very close to the definiton of "terrorist"
In fact they talk like terrorists. They admitted they held the debt ceiling "hostage"

Thats terrorist talk. I think we need to investigate the Republican Party.

Won't both sides claim that? And Obama has a bigger bully pulpit.

People want everything without making sacrifices. You got to give up some things. Raising taxes can only take you so far. Anyway, just live your life and let the politicians do the politicking. Keep in mind however that the reason the politicians give handouts is to gain votes rather than helping people. If they wanted to help the people, they would try to tell people to be self-sufficient. Unfortunately, self-sufficiency does not translate into votes.

On a side note, it was interesting listening to Obama's speech this afternoon on the radio. I heard people cheering and clapping in the background. What was that about? It's as if we're all on teams and we're fighting the other team rather than fixing the problems by working together.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out now. The dems can simply put up a bill to cut taxes to previous levels for those making $250,000 and below. If the GOP block it or vote NO in the house, it will not sit very well with the 98%. I still think that in reality, Obama wanted to go over the cliff if he didn't get what he wanted. I suspect that he thinks he can now get nearly everything he wanted, especially with people seeing a smaller check as soon as Friday (Thursday for me).

Yes it is. I have seen people in this very forum cheer on things that they are in nature against. When questioned on it, was informed that such and such rammed it down the other party's throat. What? So something that you should be against based on party belief (and this person was against the idea that was passed) but cheer it on because it was passed by "your side" and rammed down the other sides throats?

Nice.

The Republicans are happy letting the American public eat a pile of horseshit. Democrats pretend they're better than Republicans because they put a cherry on the top of the pile of horseshit. At the end of the day they all still want us to eat horseshit and be happy about it.

A pathetic tax increase is not changing the situation. We're still in a massive deficit mode, what the hell does an insiginificant tax increase do other than appease a citizenry who fails at basic math?

it's called negotiation. you ask for more than you want so you have room to give without risking what you really care about.

I'd like to stay in this thread and once again refute you as I have conclusively proven my sig is 100 percent accurate.
But your extreme mental illness is apparent to anyone who reads even a few of your posts.

This thread is about how the Republican party has employed terroristic tactics against the economic welfare of the American people.

Because the Washington Post is a more reliable source than the people who actually wrote the law. God Damn you are dumb.

These taxes are created by people (politicians) who think they know more. After all, what right do they have to make such laws? I find it funny Obama mentions the middle class while he's sitting in the White House. He's simply another one of those over-educated politicians who think they know better. How does he know that taxing the wealthy will lead to a better outcome?

They want to play both sides. They want the economy to grow, let people keep their money, give people all the benefits they want yet still balance the budget. How can a balanced budget happen in this scenario?

As we all go over the cliff tomorrow, in my mind there are two questions worth asking. (1) Is it totally irreversible as that not a no even tomorrow. Or even for the next 2 weeks. At a certain point in time it will becomes a no. (2) Or the far bigger question becomes, who will catch the blame of te American people. We may have a basic partisan pissing contest on this forum, with partisan posters asserting it won't be their side, but prior polling data strongly suggest it will be the GOP which will suffer most American voter blame.

Who cares who catches the blame?

The American voter gets the politicians he/she deserves.

In all likelyhood a stop-gap measure will be signed that will avert the supposed "disaster". Too bad IMHO, the cliff was the most resposible measure to come out of congress in damn near 20 years. It may be a bit too much too soon but it is clear congress and our President were never going to come up with any real spending cuts. Sorry for any Government workers that may lose their jobs over this but we just can't keep spending like this.

*Edit* We will have across the board tax hikes and spending cuts but suck it up folks, we have a $16 Trillion problem that ain't gonna go away.

Actually its too late to stop some of the problems. Fiscal uncertainity has already affected the economy as companies and individuals have had to make decisions based on an uncertain future. We will probably get some idea of how much it has hurt us by April, after 3 months have passed.

The damage will probably be greater than the damage caused by the Republicans taking the debt ceiling "hostage" last year, imo. And that almost sent us into another recession.

Of course, if the Republicans stick to thier plan of saying they are going to once again hold the debt ceiling "hostage" again in a few months then you may as well kiss the economy goodby in 2013
