I don't know much about cars, but i did use to work for a place called ProMotion, which was one of the bigger car performance parts distributors. From sales alone, AEM intake sales would literally ROCK Injen sales. There weren't many Injens sold at all. But i know that sales alone might not dictate anything, but in this case it seems that people liked AEM for some reason.

yeah, i'd prefer the AEM just becuaes i've heard more people talk about it. the Injen will save me money though, that will probably be the deciding factor.

I've heard that different designs are better for different cars.
Like the AEM works very well on the non-VTEC Civic engines, but my friend has an eclipse and he got an Injen.

Of course NO ONE other than the manufacturer has any real evidence (dyno readout maybe?) that actually suggests that CAIs do anything other than make your car noisier.

There's been dyno tests from AEM as well as independent dyno tests (7/97 Sport Compact Car Magazine) that show a better increase in performance from AEM than other intakes..

It's like the Thermalright AX-7 heatsink.. it's proven to be better.. but for some people the Alpha PAL 8045 works better.

Dyno tests from the manufacturer are hard to believe. Who knows what kind of stuff they did to make things look better (take the filter off? take the hood off? Maybe they did like 500 runs and took the best one even though it was a statistical outlier?

The one from SCC might be ok, but I was specifically looking for 2001/2002 Civic, and all there seems to be is anecdotal evidence like "Oh yeah I can really feel it." or "My gas mileage dropped." and "My gas mileage improved." and "Oh, I can definitely feel 10 extra HP at 5000 RPM." or "It sounds so good it has to be fast."

I want numbers. Real numbers. Stock 7th gen Civic without and then with. Third party, clearly defined conditions, real numbers.

Noooo ralli, what have you done?

I liked your car before, it was just perfect. Dammit!

You even referred to it as rice yourself... so why'd you do it, and why do you like it? Please explain! I don't understand..

hmmm.. good question. Why did i do it? i guess to make my car stand out a little big. I kind of like it when people turn heads as I drive by. I know that a good portion of those people are probably thinking "look at that loser" or "god, thats an ugly car", But at the same time, there are those thinking "cool". And in the end, I like it. I think it looks really good, especially in person.. And for that reason, i'm going to keep it that way.

and considering what i did, it could have been A LOT worse. I think its pretty mild compared to most of the 'rice' out there.

Yeah, I know what you're saying.. most people I talk to say they feel it.. but it seems more psychological. I haven't seen civic dyno results though.. People also argue the Iceman intake rules the AEM..

If you go CAI (COLD AIR INTAKE for those who don't know), it's automatic Horsepower gain. According to ASME The correction factor for air temperature is approx. for every 10 degreeF hotter, you lose 1 HP. The intake charge of a normally positioned air filter sucks in air at approx. 120+ deg. F depending on the type of car. IF you go CAI, your intake charge starts off at a lower temperature which results in HP. You also reduce pumping losses with intake, headers and exhaust because essentially, the engine is a giant pump. If air goes in and out easier, the engine breathes better, thus more HP. Obviously there is more science behind this. I just had to debunk all you rice haters who believe all those mods are nonsense.

Aye. My one friend got an Iceman for his Eclipse but claimed the AEM was better for the Honda.

I do think it's psychological. The people who claim to get significantly reduced fuel economy, for instance, I have to wonder if before getting the CAI they drove very lightly--shifting around 3000 RPM, not really flooring it. But with the CAI they like the sound when they go full throttle or at high RPM so they are driving a lot harder and shifting at 5000 or 6000 RPM and the difference in fuel economy is from their new driving style and actually unrelated to the CAI.
Likewise, do they really feel more power, or are the just now taking better advantage of an engine that always had maximum power around 5000 RPM and they just didn't bother to spin it up that high?

I once made a post about it on ATOT late at night and the consensus of notfred and other gearheads was that it really doesn't do much, and if you really want power you need forced induction, exhaust, headers, etc.

i may be off here.. but it would seem that a CAI would improve gas mileage, since in theory, its giving you more bang for the buck which each stroke of the engine. Meaning you get a little more power out of the same amount of fuel, therefore can get further.

That's what I was telling myself--if anything fuel economy should improve, although I would expect it to not be significantly different.
Which is why I came up with that explanation above to explain why perhaps the fuel economy drop wasn't related to the CAI itself.
Which is why I gave up on installing one because at the end of the day, I couldn't find any real evidence that it does anything....

News flash for you, those who look are laughing at you.

And I hope to hell the Viper logo is a Photoshop job, no Viper logo deserves that.

My biggest question here is this:

Why in God's name would you put a Viper badge on this car? The window shade... fine. Nissan stickers... fine. But a Viper badge? Your car is neither a Dodge nor is it an American sports car. It does not perform like a Viper. No one will ever mistake your car for a Viper. In short, your car is not a Viper. That badge simply does not belong on your car if, for no other reason, than it sullies the Viper image because (I can't say this enough) your car is not a Viper. Does looking at that badge make you forget you drive an SE-R and instead drive a true sports coupe? On top of that, if you're proud of your car - which you obviously are the way you've always talked about it - why would you not want to leave the Nissan badge on there since both Nissan and the SE-R and perfectly acceptable? I don't get it.

So tell me again: Why?

Edit:
...no Viper logo deserves that.

Damn straight.

Yeah, the Viper badge is fairly ghey dude... why don't you just get an ///M badge for it? There's nothing worse than seeing an "M 525i"...

Why o why do people in BMWs always want to fake like that have a Motorsport version? You would not believe how many older 5 series I've seen with glue-on "M" badges next to the 5xx. Those cars never existed!!! It's dumb!

Lose the Viper badge, and please don't get a wing!

Did i ever claim that it was a viper? And for christs sake, may the lord have mercy on anyone who actually does mistake my car for a viper.

So.. why did i put it on there? I dont know. I guess mainly becuase i like it. On my previous sentra, (a sentra XE) i put an SE-R badge on the back of it and took off the XE. was i trying to fool people into thinking i had an SE-R, dispite the fact that i had 14'' rims, no body kit, and my car was slow. No. I just wanted an SE-R, and thought the emblem looked cool on it.
Same with the viper emblem. It just looks cool. I love vipers, they're my dream cars. I will own a viper one day.

and if you saw it in person, you'd also admit that it looks kind of cool.

You had the Viper logo on your old Sentra as well didn't you? I remember you posting pics of the viper emblem a long long time ago.

yep. I put one on my honda civic before that too.
its sort of a tradition for me.. goodluck sort of thing. Kind of like the my Saturn [the car company] key chain i've had and used since i was in 5th grade, despite the fact i've never owned, nor will i ever own a saturn.

please explain the reason behind covering 1/4 of your windshield with duct tape.

Beyond my personal opinion that it looks silly and is dangerous, I just don't get why you would do it...
