I didn't think it was bad by any means, just much harder to get into and get creeped out by because I kept catching myself smiling at scenes that should've been scary.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I think you watched "The Ring" first while I watched Ringu first. I think with these films the special effects don't matter that much, its more the story. And if you knew the plot then its not scary. I guess I liked Ringu more because it was able to achieve so much with such a small budget.

I saw The Ring last weekend and I avoid watching scary movies. It's not scary at all. I don't believe at any point I was scared. After watching it, I wish I could get my time back because the movie was that lame.

I think it is supposed to be more visually scary than nightmare scary.

It's the opposite. Texas Chainsaw Massacre is visually scary... it's the horror and stuff. The Ring is nightmarish, you don't actually see more than flashes of stuff, yet they creep you out.

Anyways, if you watch scary movies, you have to watch them at night with the lights off. I've heard of so many brave people saying this movie or that movie wasn't scary, but they watched it in the afternoon. Watch it at night with the lights off, then come back (i always watch horror movies with headsets too, i dont' have a 5.1 system)

Ug. I watched the opening of the Ring with headphones on. I couldn't take it. I didn't trust my roomates to not sneak up and kill me.

Well, as somebody who is a huge horror buff, who has probably watched every horror film imaginable (even in other languages), i can tell you that The Ring creeped me out... and i saw Ringu, Ring 2, and Birthday (prequel) ... all these were the Japanese ones, before i saw The Ring, and it still creeped me out.

But like i said, you need to have a certain ambience set up before to truly enjoy it. I never watch horror movies at the theatre if i can help it. For some reason, if i'm with other people, especially in a theatre with hundrds of others, it just doesn't scare me. But if i bring the same movie home, on my little 20" tv and a pair of cheap headsets, it's a completely different experience.

Everyone I know thought it was scary and not all of them are scared of movies. I personally thought it was scary, but I don't really get that scared by movies. I was too busy laughing at everyone at the theater getting scared

If you really want to creep somebody out, find a friend that hasn't watched ring or ringu ( i know, hard to find). And tell them you watched this video a week back and hand them a VHS of the movie, not a DVD.
And then after they have watched the movie, mess with them some more by turning on the tv playing the movie when they are in other room, etc.....

Just go watch it. if the poll showed 100% scary, are you going to not watch it? no, you'll only get more curious. and if it was 100% not scary, you would watch it anyways figuring " hey, its no big deal"

The US version sucked assss. It was like a bad x-files episode with a scary 30 second ending...not even scary, just shocking

Kinda. If you watch the Japanese version, you should really watch both of them (and even the prequel if you can).

As for Dark Water, i didn't like that at all. Certainly wasnt' anywhere on par with Ringu. That said, that's definitely just a personal opinion, many other people liked it.

I liked The Eye (chinese movie) much better. Infact, there's a Hollywood version coming out... with Tom Cruise was it?

Argh don't do that. You're just going to ruin it. The story itself is kind of bland, just like what you said in your first post. It's how everything fits together, and the ambience of it that makes it what it is.

She's GORGEOUS. That is one hell of a MILF.

Part of the reasons why i didn't like the Japanese version was the woman, although hot too, was just so subserviant. She clearly should have been the main character, but you noticed how all the major decisions and actions were done by her ex-husband. He even slapped her! It just left a bad taste in my mouth... that said, it's still a good movie, but i much prefer the Hollywood version (and i rarely say this to Hollywood remakes).

I slept with the light on for 3 nights after watching that flick. And I kept seeing...something...in the bathroom mirror which wasn't there when I turned around.

Very much a mood/plot movie. Not like a mad slasher flick.

And yes, that was definitely one hot MILF!

It might've been because I was watching it with my g/f.... but it was too confusing to be scary... I was too busy guessing at what was gong on than actually understanding it.
Plus it seemed to go on for about 20 mins too long.
But based on what everybody is saying maybe I should give it another go, alone this time.

The eye was quite nice (I loved the out of focus segments), though I must admit I really hate how virtually every commercial chinese release has to have at least two "goofy" romance scenes thrown in.

As far as dark water goes, I've certainly heard reactions go both ways. Being an asian film nut I've spent lots of time thinking about nakata and have come to the conclusion that dark water is something of a hegelian synthesis (where ringu is the thesis and kaosu the antithesis). For me, ringu and kaosu were respectively scary and thrilling, but ultimately limited. DW's fusion of the two elements is practically gourmet. Hitchcock would be extremely impressed.
