My 1998 240SX was in a $8k accident about 2 years ago.

High value was only $5k at the time...they paid for all the repairs despite that.

This is why i don't put a bunch of money into my car. like spoilers, funky paint jobs..etc.
i just leave it factory and pay it off as soon as possible.

I'm guessing the REAL reason you don't put spoilers and funky paint jobs on your car is you don't want to look like a douchebag.

Regardless of what you get from an insurance company, I'm assuming it's better to get something rather than nothing (if there was no insurance industry).

That said, the couple times I've used car insurance it's worked okay for me. A used car (Nissan Sentra) that I paid $5000 for and drove for 3 years was involved in two accidents - $400 paid to me for a fender bender (other drivers fault), and $4400 when it was totaled (but not by me, so no effect on my insurance). Use of a car for 3 years for $200 + expenses = win.

If they offer you 60% you say no.

Their word isn't final. If you accept 60% then you're the sucker and they are laughing at you for being a pushover.

state farm actually gave me 10 grand to stop bitching at them. the guy that hit my ex wifes car and sped off was never caught, but they had his description and license number. he was also a state farm customer, which made them have to "fight themselves" for money hehe. they told me they werent going to press charges, but i wanted them pressed. so, i wouldnt let up about it and they paid medical for both of us, repaired the car and upped the already decent settlement 10 grand if i would agree to not pursue the guy in court.

I'm going to start making long rant posts about hypothetical bad things that I'm sure are going to happen to me even though they have no basis in reality.

OMG SO MAD SOMETHING PROBABLY MAYBE NOT-EVEN-SURE COULD HAPPEN.

One great thing about this community is that there are so many good people here who are will to help out a fellow man who didn't even ask.

only if their shitty jobs. Owning something like this doesnt make one a douchebag except the jealous pple calling them such.

I just don't invest in kits, audio, performance systems, nice paints..etc cause of insurance. i couldnt afford to keep redoing it everytime some non driver destroys it.

They ended up giving her more than KBB private-party. False alarm.

Now I have to go car shopping with her so she doesn't actually get screwed over.

So your original idea of $15k was completely off the wall huh.

Probably more like 35k

You are being way over dramatic....

But isn't that the way of forums across the internet and esp. on AT?

All one has to do is look at these forums: P&N, Video Cards, CPUs, to gain an appreciation how much drama exists where none should. Over dramatic is nuttin'.

OP admitted he was overly dramatic, not much else to say on this now. Many wouldn't have come in to admit, so...

If she likes the is350, why not just find another one?

Would hate to own a lesser car right after I paid for one in full.

2008 Lexus IS 350s with low miles, navigation, leather, etc. run from $25k to $30k.

She'll be lucky if they cut her a $15,000 check.

Exactly how do you figure that?

Edit: Just read thru all of it, nobody got screwed as expected. The closest I've ever heard of people getting screwed is a trade-in price lowball, where you just have to negotiate.

My sister, with my help, picked up a certified pre-owned 2010 Mercedes E350.

If you feel the offer is low; have them show justification.

You can also challenge the justification if you feel it is flawed.

Many insurance companies use a third party to scour newspaper ads for used vehicles. but they never follow up on what actually happened to those vehicles.

You can use KBB, Edmunds, CarMax and other large sites to find out the price for the same vehicle in condition and mileage.

Now you have a baseline for negotiating.

You can also threaten to take the issue to the Division of Insurance in your state if they insist on being low.

Negotiation is not always possible with insurance companies, in the State of Washington and I suspect other states as well, if the other persons insurance company is responsible for paying for your damage, it is considered a 3rd party action and you do not have the same protections afforded a 1st party claimant. You can certainly talk to a lawyer and often they will tell you it would be a waste of time to litigate, as you would not get much (if anything) more and the cost of litigation would most likely offset any gain.
