I had the same problem with the final page showing 227.95 when I first entered the order. Hit the Back button on the browser and re-entered the code, hit submit to get back to the final page and it was down to $202.95.

DudleyDocker......The old and new rebate forms show different department and promo codes. Should work for you as its not just an extension of the date on the first offer.

And yes, everybody watch that last page. I had to dump my basket and restart after I registered as the code would disappear. Once you register, start over with your shopping cart. The code should work fine for you then.

Anyone ever notice that Staples.com site has the same problem. YOu put items into your cart... then create an account or login -- cart contents are lost. Sounds like if you create a NecX account BEFORE filling cart you would be safe from it.

As for the drive == If all drives are EIDE:
TDK, Creative, Iomega 12x10x32 models are all Plextor hardware with different name -- ALthough I haven't seen it yet, a hack can easily be devised to rename the TDK to the Plextor.

TDK has been good about releasing Plextor firmware within days of release by Plextor, so no hack required there!

Good drive. If you read the web page above, there is recent news that SD2 protection will NOT copy on these drives. The SD2 copy protection is designed to prevent certain writers from being able to make copies (it involves bit patterns that confuse the drive)... and this drive is one that is unable to make copies. Actually, it can make copies that IT CAN READ -- but they can't be read on a CD-ROM or other brand of CD Writer. Only a few drives can make copies of SD2, the Plextor 12x4x10x can (Sanyo), but in other respects the Plextor 12x10x32 (and this TDK) are better drives. All Phillips recorders can do the SD2 protecton, but their recorders are generally not as good as the Plextors...

Other than that, considered by many to be a Perfect drive! Hot deal at $152.

Thank you
Incredible... I was handed a TDK 12/10/32 veloCD by the manager at CompUSA
on "super Sunday" since he had no Iomegas in stock, (and I bitched). He gave
me the sealed box for $99... NO rebates, no hassle. Now with this $50 TDK rebate
I'm looking at a $299 burner for $49.
This deal has become so sweet that it has brought me out of the "lurking" closet
and into my first post.
Thanks to all who contributed!
(gee now I have to come up with a sig...)
I'm definately going to need spellcheck!

Now if only I could go back in time and not purchased my Plextor 12/10/32 from Onvia.com for $193.50 (which was and still is a good price) so I can buy this one. It'd be nice to get Nero with the TDK instead of Adaptec bloatware.

Nice deal Jskibo!

Just finished the order.

Nice consolation prize for those of us that missed out on the net $110.73 (after tax, after MIR rebate, for us overtaxed NYers) Iomega CompUSA deal.

Well, $40 more for the same Plextor 12x10x40 drive, but with TDK supplying drivers that are up to date copies of the Plextor ones (issued only a few days later) without the software hack hassles, and with the full licensed and upgradeable copy of Nero instead of Adaptec bloatware, not such a bad deal. Not bad at all.

Now, just to stave off Buyers remorse, everybody thinks this is a better drive than the 4 meg buffer Aopen one which Tom's Hardware reviewed favorably, don't they?

I mean the burnproof thing, and general quality.

mrVW, do you know if that SD2 copy protection scheme is defeated by the Aopen 12x10x32 drive? (I could probably still cancel this order tonight...)
Aopen also sells for about $150, well probably about 165 delivered, by pricewatch vendors.

The TDK should allow a rename like the Iomega does... TDK --> Plextor rename info page (waiting for first tester) -- I have not released a patch yet as someone needs to be willing to do the first test!

Interesting, a guy sent me a picture of his sticker on his TDK and it says "Made in Japan" when all the Iomega/Plextor's I've seen are China. Anyone check their Iomega and see Japan? Picture of the TDK is on the web page mentioned in this post.

Can you still order even though its not in stock? Does it still come for the same price? How long will it take to come? Thanks.

Web site says you can still place the order and they'll put you on Backorder. Don't know when it'll come in, but the rebate is good until April 30th.

since it's backordered now,
why not consider getting backordered at buy.com's
link
it's the same drive with 50 CDRs

226.95 - 30 - 50 - (ebates) < 147

Well, since Buy.com tends to carry everything electronic under the sun at very good prices to begin with, I consider their $30 off coupons, which have become rare, to be close to money.

Accordingly, it's something to preserve if anther place like Gatway's accessories store has an equivalent deal on a particular item I want.

Or so my thought processes go, anyway.

Just a thought, but if NECX gets them in soon, you'll save the shipping costs....Then again, you do get 50 CDR's with Buy.com. Depends on whether you have another use for the buy.com coupon.

I had thought I was one of the few people to get an order in before they ran out. Gateway / NecX took my order Saturday.

But today I get an email saying the manufacturer is out of stock.

Well, I haven't built the computer this is going in yet anyway. Waiting for either DDR Athlon mobos, or the KT133A/s with the 266fsb &SDRAM. Ordered my case today anyway.

Actually, I picking off deals here and there. Trouble is, with no box (laptop now) to test things in, I run into harder return issue if it turns out stuff doesn't work when the box is up in a month or so ...

Are they gonna charge us on backorder for shipping if the free shipping deal runs out before they get in a shipment of these drives? That would blow...

Oh, I don't think so. I had a full order print out. I think they'll honor it as quoted. If they don't automatically, I just about positive we can bitch them into it. Gateway wants a good consumer rep.
