Actually, I placed my order on the 11th, since I missed out during the first wave of orders a week ago. They shipped it on the 12th, and it's supposed to be here Monday.

So apparently whatever stock problems they had last week are fixed now. *shrug*

How big is that SD2 copyright stuff? Are a lot of companies starting to use it? Can Firmware upgrades let the drive ignore it? Or are you pretty much screwed if you are trying to burn an SD2 CD?

I was reading an article/Review on this drive:
http://www.cdrwcentral.com/reviews/tdk/cdrw121032/index.html

The article compared it to the plextor 12/10/32 drive. The only thing that worried me in the review was the mention that the TDK drive will not read subchannel data. Will this be a problem? I always make back up copies of my cd's and didn't know if this would cause a problem with copy protected cd's. I have the reader that clonecd recommends: toshiba 6702B.
Anyways, thanks for the post. This is a great deal. The lowest i seen the drive for on PriceWatch was $259

I've read conflicting reports on this. One web site said that revisions after TLA#000 can't read subchannel data. A search on Dejanews.com for "plextor" and "subchannel" will yield some more discussion, including people who claim that their later revision drives can read subchannel without problem.

CDRInfo.com said that according to Plextor it could be enabled by jumpering the reserved jumpers on the back of the drive (see the news for January 9 on the main page):

"1) Enable SubChannel Data reading in PLEXTOR/CREATIVE/TDK/IOMEGA 12/10/32 CDR-W drives:

If you facing problems when try to read SubChannel Data with your Plextor based recorder there might be a solution for you. All the above drives have 2 jumpers next to the digital audio out. If you jumper them then you drive would recognized as UDMA33 and probably it will start reading SubChannel data. We tried it in our TDK CyClone 121032, which refused previously to read SubChannel data, and worked fine with latest CloneCD (2.8.4.2).

This is the official Plextor answer about jumper the drive:
"...The "Reserved jumper" (2 horizontal pins next to the digital audio out) is used for testing during production. If these jumper pins are shortened, some PC motherboard will work at Ultra DMA-33. But we do not guarantee the working..."

So if you face SubChannel problems please try the above trick and report back results."

I have the plex and I could read sbchannel then after I reinstalled the OS (the same) I COULDN"T. Turns out I needed a CPU driver that I prob had before and didn't reinstall. After I added that driver, I have subchannel again.
Moral of the story, make sure all your drivers are up to date before you do hardware modifications.

Following up regarding CloneCD and the VeloCD...

I read in one online review that although it couldn't read subchannel data, it DID work with CloneCD because it can read "Raw DAO"? or something along those lines. I was always under the impression that the ability to read subchannel data determined whether or not a given CDRW would work with CloneCD.

CloneCD makes Exact copies of any type of CD, music, game, console disk game, etc. Even if it is copy protected. Because it copies the copy protection. Those are the subchannel information stuff.

To use CloneCD for especially well copy protected CD's with the TDK / Plextor, you need a source CD-ROm drive which is good at reading the subchannels. Most Toshibas are. So are Aopens. Most DVD drives appear not to be.

Will this work with the buy.com bundle of this drive + 50cdr's?? It's back in stock... Does anyone know if the $50 MIR works with the bundle (is the UPC code different?). Thinking of ordering one for my other computer if it does...

Just placed an order at buy.com using the $30 buy.com coupon.

10262188 KIT 32X/12X/10X REWRITABLE EIDE VELOCD/CDR MEDIA 50-PK BUNDLE 1 $226.95
80492381 $30 coupon off $150 or more 1 ($30.00) Redeemed

Shipping brought the total to $203.97 - $50 MIR

Only down side I can see to this unit is that it does not have a S/PDIF-out (Digital Audio) connector or does it and I just missed it?

If your talking about the small little 2 pin digital output on the back of the unit near the audio out, yes it has it.

I read up at CloneCD that the Toshiba DVD-ROM drives are good for readers with CloneCD and read the sub-channel data, but the only particular model mentioned is the SD-M1302, this one is not found on pricewatch. Is the SD-M1502 (16x) just as good?

What is a good CD-ROM to pair with this burner? Also, is it worth the extra money for the 16/10/40? How much faster is it?

Yes this cdrom has a digital line output ...

Anyway, I just can;t stop being amazed at this drive ...

I sucessfully copied cd-to-cd on the fly at 12x, while running dnetc, icq, multiple web browser, winamp, downloading stuffs, and reading outlook ...

wow ... my old yamaha 8x would choke doing on the fly without anything running on my computer.

amazing drive

The SKU's are the same. This "kit" is from buy.com, not TDK. What I did with mine was doctor the receipt so that it showed the a separate order for both the Drive and the CDR's ($10 rebate on those too), just to be on the safe side.

UPDATE
They just dropped the price to $220.95!!!! at buy.com as of this morning(1-15)and it is in stock.
Also there is a chance there is a $10 rebate on the disk pack.

So now the potential final cost is around $138 including shipping if you use the $30 buy.com coupon, the $50 TDK rebate for the drive, and the $10 rebate for the 50 disc pack.

If you have ordered the drive in the last 3 days from them you can request the lower price.

Be careful they actually sell the same drive without the 50 cd-r pack for $221.95

Drive with 50 cd-r pack

mrVW,

Given that TDK apparently has a reputation of frequent firmware updates (they're up to 1.07 now), why would anyone want to rename the TDK to Plextor? I'm not debating with you; I just don't know, so I'm asking why.

Arschloch,

CD burner software usually comes out with support for the most common burners first (and the Plextor is about as common as it gets , and don't support the other drives until later, if ever. I don't know where the VeloCD fits in the chain of "common-est", but this would be one reason why you'd want to flash.
