get a 4 door golf TDI .

it comes in manual, it gets like 40mpg, its faster and larger than a fit. and generally people in the bay area accept the golf as not low budget, but semi premium.

or just get the fit anyway. The fit is a nice car and if its what you want then get it.

I agree with this, and this is probably what I would get over a Fit. Still, the Fit is a good car and it seems to transcend the generation lines pretty well. Although the Fit is probably going to be cheaper to buy, so the fuel savings of the TDI might not matter so much if cost of buying is a big concern.

And the bit about impressing the girl with a car. Just forget that, as if that's all she cares about shes being very shallow. As long as you have a decent car(as in not a 20 yr old run down rust heap), that's clean, runs well, and etc. then most girls out there will be just fine with that.

Besides being a group of spoiled dbags, Realtors need nicer cars for impressing prospective buyers when driving them to look at homes, or parking their own car in a seller's driveway during an open house to display a level of "class".

As a photographer, I wouldn't think you need to display this image. Realtors will want to own a nicer car than you. Since they are your primary clients, don't upscale them. By driving a Fit, they might also feel that you are aggressively priced, meaning they get to keep more of their commission by paying less for your services. Buy what you want.

PS: As a regular Joe, I would like to see a photographer drive something like a Subaru. Its not pretentious, fairly priced, roomy enough for your gear, and practical for all types of shoots (even off-road situations).

Well I hate realtors. They represent everything that's wrong with America.

I also wonder why you're friends with idiots.

But it seems like it makes sense to impress the realtor scum-suckers with your vehicle if it helps your business. I also wouldn't buy a luxury car, ever... how about a normal mid size car like a Subaru Legacy, Ford Fusion, etc? If you want a hatchback there are very very few options.

Actually, it's people like you who represent everything that's wrong with America. Not everyone wants to deal with all the trouble of trying to sell their house themselves so why would you deny someone the ability to make a living doing something they love?

That said, I know a photographer who drives a Scion xB. Nobody expects a photographer to show up driving a Ferrari, drive whatever you have and then when you're making more money buy a better car.

You have to test drive a Mazda 3. The fit is great, but you just don't get the ride and niceties that the Mazda3 can provide. Recently helped my mom get a new car with C4C money. We both liked the Fit but it just didn't get as high of mileage as we thought it should have for being honda's smallest offering. She has been driving all over LA with it for 5-6 months now and loves it.

Mazda 3 FTW!

Realtors are like George Bush, failed at everything else.

edit: also, make sure you're paying at least $75 for your haircuts.
Lulz. A friend of mine pays exactly that. His hair looks like any other guy's hair. Of course, since I started giving myself military cuts with $10 trimmers that last for a year or so I recommend it to everyone. Fast, almost free, bad ass. On the other hand the guy does really adore cars but has done an admirable job of constraining his car purchases so is driving something much less than his neighbors.
That'd be like a buck a hair for me.
So when you said you were incredibly successful you didn't mean in terms of keeping your hair hee hee. It's ok, hair is crap. I will shave my head soon.

Your friends are ridiculous. I am a long time silicon valley resident in your general age range and your friends sound like people I know who are shallow and all about image. Go to rich areas and notice the number of older and not so flashy cars. Even people with success to trump don't necessarily do it. Drive the car you want to drive, not what people think you should be driving to send messages to others.

The fit is a great car, if you want driving dynamics, cargo space and small exterior volume. It's practical, reliable, the gas mileage doesn't suck and the resale value is excellent (so don't buy a used one). Lets say you get a 370Z instead (I would put money that at least one of your friends has something like this - or a 350 Z or G35/37). You'll have a fraction of the cargo and passenger space, several times larger payments, higher insurance, close to half the fuel economy. Factoring in all the costs, including depreciation, you may be looking at twice the cost, long term. Is it really worth it, just so that you can send a message to people who may or may not be listening (or care)? Not unless you truly want that car.

Think of the car as another tool, like a fancy new lens. Sure there are lenses that give off an air of authority while being impractical and expensive. Would you go carry around a L series supertele just so that the first person who looks at you will think you're a hot shot photographer? It will grant you a "social advantage" (while being much cheaper long term than the more expensive car).

second the mini or a mazda3 hatch, especially as an image for a photographer. you're not exactly looking for an executive type of car from being a photographer, but mini is very stylish and doesn't scream econobox.

My realtor drives a Maxima. Not a brand new one either. He's a retired partner from a decent size law firm and does this to keep busy, so it's not like he can't afford it. He's also one of the best buyers agents in the area. And this is shallow Northern Virginia.

So yeah, it doesn't matter what the hell a realtor drives. Matters even less what you drive. If you really want to compromise a little, get a Civic instead of a Fit. Or a Corolla. But what the hell, photographers are expected to be artists anyway - drive a 70's Gremlin covered in bumper stickers if you want. Same reason I don't expect my artist friend to drive anything but a bright yellow truck with crank up windows - it suits him. Drive what suits you.

Depends what kind of homes you're photographing. If they're 100-250k homes, your current vehicle is fine. If they're 250-500k, I'd suggest stepping up to something like a G37 sedan. If you're photographing homes over 500k, you really should be rolling up in a full on luxury car... BMW... Mercedes... Cadillac. If my home is worth a million dollars and you roll up to photograph it in a Fit, I'm not letting you through the front door.

I was thinking about this earlier today. Would a realtor selling a home, for, say, 200k be unable to take their own pics? If so, they should eat a bullet. I mean I am just being honest. I can see getting a professional to take pics of the 20 person table against the sunset in a $6M castle, but if a realtor can't even break out a digicam for pics of a basic house what good are they?

I'm probably going to offend you here, but do you REALLY think like that? If I'm selling a $1m house and you turn up in a top of the line vehicle I'm going to think I'm paying too much for your services, then I'm going to call up the talented young man in the Honda Fit.

You don't get to own a $1m+ house by paying over the odds for services just because you can.

Hes in CA, and everyone is riding high before the bankruptcy happens, think of it like your bipolar soon to be ex wife has the uncancelled credit cards and everything is on sale.

Most of the people here that make under $100K a year are trying to move out of CA because theyre flipping broke...

The car you need is obviously the Fit. Its perfect for your needs.

However, I agree that image is everything in your field. The first car that sprang to mind that could fit the bill is a used Infiniti G35 sedan. Sporty, enough room to carry your gear, classy appearance, manual available. Gas mileage is not very good, but it's not horrific either. It's a car that conveys some status but still has seems relatively youthful. You could probably find one in decent shape for the price of a new Fit.

a million dollar home in california is about equivalent to a 200k home anywhere else.

buy a car that impresses you, not your friends.

Uhhh.... HONDA CIVIC TYPE R?! :awe:

Scion tc? IDK...

Toyota Prius?!

Or maybe this?
Pretty sure that makes you look successful. Although gas mileage might be a problem... BUT YOU'LL GET TO THE PLACES YOU NEED TO GO FASTER!

or that

Is the sarcasm gauge in your Fit broken?
