I'd get a Subaru and I have a Versa and cross shopped the Fit at the time, a Subie is cheap enough but different enough that you'd get come cachet w it.
I'm still unconvinced on German reliability and their dealership experience still ranks near the bottom for VW

. You pull up in an old cheap looking car and people get frightened that you won't do a good job. I notice my VIP realtors constantly telling the home sellers how good I am because the sellers always second guess my ability based on appearances. I'm young and I drive a crappy looking car. My image in a way slightly undermines my realtor's credibility to his/her clients. This is bad.

Maybe the sellers somehow are privy to your threads about your crying over mousey. Or perhaps they read the bit about you wearing women pants or how your daddy snuggles with you. Or the other thread about you losing your...

If you really like the Fit and it fits (no pun nintendo) your needs, go for it. If your friends don't like it, get friends that aren't shitheads. If girls don't like it, meet girls that aren't dumb bitches

Personally I'd prefer a Golf TDI if it's withing your means, but it's like $10k more than a base Fit I think

I think for this kind of photography I'd prefer a clean cut, mostly professional look. No tie or jacket, but a button down shirt and nice pants. Serious, quiet, businesslike. You pull up in a new Fit, a modest but late model vehicle in good condition. You pull out a big Pelican case (1610 or larger) full of gear and carry it inside (don't even think about using a colorful Crumpler bag.... save that for weddings). Even if you don't end up using most of the gear, the meaning is evident: you are a Serious Photographer. You need the hatchback to carry gear. (Which, BTW, you should upgrade to a D700 (gripped) and a 14-24, pronto. Ditch the 70-200 VR if you have to; you can always get another one later. The 14-24 WILL make a difference in your work.) Also a nice Gitzo carbon fiber tripod and a Really Right Stuff or Acratech ballhead, along with an L-bracket for the body. Stuff that people look at and say "Oooh, that looks expensive." Always use lens hoods (you should anyway for flare and protection reasons, but they're also useful for impressing people). Put more of your money and thought into impressing people with the tools of your trade, not your car. As long as it's not a dull, aging vehicle, nobody will care. (Sorry to keep coming back to your current Echo, but IMO that's almost a worst-case scenario already.)

This guy got it right. gear and your professional look are almost always your best shot (pun intended) at getting the proper impression as a photographer on your clients. Show them you mean business, if you have gear whip it out and show it off. Hell it impresses me when I see the Photogorapher at a wedding laying out cables and showing off his $10 K camera.

I'm in my forties, incredibly successful, and I...

Obviously, FBB, you HAVE to do whatever IronWing says, because, as he so helpfully points out, he's incredibly successful! Not just "successful", NO! Incredibly successful! :awe:

Alrighty then!

Fuzz, if you so intensely care about making an impression and absolutely want and need to do so, then get yourself something truly unique, like a used (perforce) but cherried-out civilian (ie, non-taxi yellow) Checker sedan.

It will mark you as an iconoclast of unwavering distinction, and, most important, current and potential clients will remember you. It might even get you laid . . . by the type of women most likely to be attracted to you . . . someone with decidedly non-mainstream proclivities.

Factory invoice is about 23k, they are more expensive than the fit, but its a lot bigger and has a much more premium feel than the fit would. You really get what you pay for, its up to you though to see if it would be worth it for you though.

I know you're in SJ, but I think the nor cal dealers all sell for MSRP + 500 or something. Its still kinda new and in incredibly hot demand so some dealers are like that. It may be worth it to come down here to pick it up (or even have it shipped).

i actually went with a friend to check out the TDI a few weeks back and the silicon valley dealers ar e"asking for $5000 + msrp" i kid you not.

TDI and greener cars are just more hot up here. the guy said $3000 if we bought today! haha. If you do consider that car, buying it in socal might not be the worst idea.

Another thing with the TDI is there is like $1200-1500 tax credit. plus VWs have free maintenance so if you factor that in with the purchase (i think realistically you could get it at msrp) it is not hugely more than the fit. uses less gas and is faster too. interior is well a lot nicer, plus if its important you cant get xenon headlights or bluetooth integration in a fit (the BT is amazing to me, seeing as most cars this is at least an option now)

at 24 you only think you do.

what percentage of your income goes towards your car payments and insurance?

(sorry if my inkling is wrong and you are in fact very well-off)

Some people can do this... I bought a G35 coupe when i was 24 right after I moved out of my parents. With a check. I just had to live at home for a while after college instead of immediately moving out to save up some cash. That kind of sucked, but well you make tradeoffs.

A c class is not that expensive, if he is 24 and has a good job , given how few expenses you potentially have at that age (if you are single, have no kids, possibly live at home... and have a job you could have lots of moeny)

Get a Forrester, that's what all the lesbians drive.

or get a Mini as it'll appeal to more folks than a Fit.

Since this apparently is still an undecided issue (although it seems that Golf TDI & Mini seem to be popular suggestions) I'd add that you can drive whatever you want as long as it is clean (in & out), free of body damage, in good working order, and has a fresh coat of wax. Clay bar is your friend.

Oh, and one more thing: add an Apple sticker.

disclaimer: Passat driving Apple-using Electrical Engineer here, no apple sticker on car, uses XP at work, OS X at home.

Thanks for the tips about APR Stage 1 (forget who it was on page 1).

really? I find this is what is the crux of the problem, people put way too much emphasis on how someone looks or what they have over how they interact. No, I don't mean you can drive up in a beat up pinto wearing cargo shorts, but as long as you're clean and well spoken, what's the problem

Actually, the strobist guy drives and xA and wears cargo shorts most of the time. I got to meet him and help out on one of his shoots. Why the xA? Cars lose too much value. And he bought it upfront in cash. And it's got a ton of space for him to throw gear in.

You do want to send a message of competence and order to the people you will be working for/with. So I agree that there are cars that are unsuitable. Driving an old hunk that doesn't run well or is in horrible cosmetic condition sends the signal that you may not care about doing a good quality job. For someone working as a photographer this may be a very bad image to project.

I'd say a Toyota Echo is on the borderline of sending this signal, because people will consider it a sort of "car of last resort". It looks cheap (and it was cheap), it's ugly, and it's no longer made so it can't possibly be new. On the other hand, you don't need to spend a ton of money to project an image of conscientiousness and aesthetic sensitivity.

I would go against the recommendations of a TDI, mostly because Californians are conditioned to hate diesels.

You'd be explaining how its cleaner than previous diesels till your or the cars death to people...

You want to be noticed? buy the Nissan Cube, karma points for styling, small, easy to park, noticed instantly...

The King of Nigeria Zaboora El Kbeere has passed away and he has no heirs. I was most trusted of his staff and he wants me to give his fortune to one who deserves it. All his monies are frozen until worthy person signs papers. I will need $20 to send you the documentation via postal service as soon possible.

Thanks much Sir dear

Remember, your clients are realtors, the shallowest, second most douchebaggy profession in existence. Especially in the Bay Area, those assholes get 60K for a half hours work putting up a sign and telling people there 9485794 other offers on the house.

Out of curiosity, what is the most douchebaggy profession in existence?

i'm going to guess investment banker at goldman sachs , or mostly bankers in general

i mean you think car salesmen are bad, but they actually have to sell real cars, or realtors have to sell real houses. bankers just sell derivatives of paper that they gamble in a giant casino known as the financial system and they get paid even more.

if its not banker, i'm going to go with politician.

Actually, I'm 32 now. I couldn't tell you what % it was at the time but I bought a house at 25 years old so it couldn't have been too much. Have a good job and make good money but 'very well off' is certainly not accurate. FWIW, I drive a 6-series BMW now.

I always pictured you drove a big pink Cube, Soul or xB.

Fits my memory of the OP. With a bunch of stuffed animals on the passenger seat he can snorgle with at stop lights.

OMG what should I do????

When to a Mazda dealership - Mazda3 Sport 6 speed Manual - They are willing to sell it to me for *$950* below invoice - $18,300. And I get 0% financing.

It is so fun to drive, but at a cost. The interior space is tiny compared to the Fit, and the gas mileage sucks in comparison as well. But man, does it love to carve the turns. And it churps switching into 2nd gear when gunning it. It looks a lot better than the Fit too. But I feel guilty driving it because the Fit is so much more practical.

The Fit on the other hand is $16,900 at the lowest with 1.9% financing.

Wahhhh what should I do? I need to make a decision ASAP
