She is being cared for in her home by hospice and family. I sit here today before I go see her in the morning, wondering what and how we will do in her absence. I want only peace and an end to the suffering for her, and hold no illusions that she will just get better.
We have sat with her these last ten days, patiently waiting for her to grace us with her wit and tell us another story. The telling seems to bring life back into her eyes, and for a brief moment she is herself again.

skyking, it is hard watching her, but you and your family are doing the best thing for her and yourselves by being there for her in her final moments. keep cherishing these times and enjoy the stories

My condolences. I lost my mom in 97 to cancer of the liver. She wanted to spend her remaining time with us, so we packed her up and moved her down from Spokane.
It's tough as hell watching a parent wither away and die...and there ain't a dammed thing you can do to stop it...all you can do is be supportive...and love them, and try to help where you can.
Ignore the bad...remember the good.

My condolences. You are doing the right thing, and I'm sure it brings her comfort during this awful stretch. May she go quietly and in as little pain as possible.

I want to say something as I feel really bad for you and your family...just don't have the words to say it. Truely sad...

There is nothing in this world as painful or that makes you feel as helpless as watching a loved one suffer and deteriorate in front of your eyes. I wish you all the love in the world, please just be with your family. At least with family none of you will go it alone.

May the final moments of your moms life be peaceful, loving, and filled with the joy of a good family that saw her through a good life.

We are all here and although the focus is certainly on mom, we are also chatting about everything and sitting in her room. It was very hard to arrive and sit down between my brother and sister this morning, and the waves of emotion just washed over me. I told her I loved her and knew she loved me and it was OK to go. I am sure she heard me, though she is unresponsive.
She sleeps now, we wait. Thank you all for your kindest words and thoughts.

sorry to hear about your (and her) situation. I hope for all the best.

That being said, 85 is pretty damn good! she's lived a long full live.

Hearing that it's ok to go is very important, have everybody tell her if they haven't already. My heart breaks for you and for your mom.

She sung that one for my sister a couple of days ago.. today youtube came to the rescue and I could play it for her.

"When you walk the streets you'll have no cares
If you walk the lines and not the squares
As you go through life make this your goal
Watch the donut, not the hole.

It's written on the rainbow, in letters made of gold
Written on the rainbow, there's wisdom to behold
My friend the little sparrow flew
Close enough to see
Written on a rainbow is this philosophy."
