Here is a review of several brands of Compact Flash cards. I was surprised that SanDisk 512 MB ranks almost the lowest speed-wise. I too just purchase this camera and almost bought the SanDisk 256 MB until I saw this review. By looking at the owner's manual for the Canon A70 on Canon's website, you can derive that in movie mode, 640x480 will require a little over 1MB/s transfer rate. I don't know how much onboard memory is built into the A70, but I doubt it has 30MB to cache the entire 30 seconds of movie you can film at this resolution. Therefore, I think the speed of the memory card becomes important for movie mode at this resolution. From the review, SanDisk is definitely shy of this speed. So instead, I bought the Simpletech from Dell instead. It has a theoretical 3 MB/s write speed. The review has it tested at 2.28 MB/s which is still plenty. Also, the review shows SimpleTech to perform very well in couple of the high-end Canon SLR's. Be aware that Nikon does not like SimpleTech though.

the reason I said they overestimate is because my friend bought this camera 2-3 weeks ago when it was this price and he also had a far off shipping date and it shipped after one day.... but I guess they really are in short supply now I was hoping to have it before next Thursday for spring break

i tortured myself over the a70 vs the s230. i really like the manual mode, shutter/aperture priority, and manual focus features of the a70, but the size of the s230.

so i went to best buy and did the pocket test (those cables just reached far enough). no contest. s230 is significantly better on the pocket bulge.

if i really need those features, i'll use my pentax pzp1 and deal with the film. bought the s230.

just wish they'd done the batteries on the a70 like they did with the elphs. those four AAs really bulk up the camera. i'd rather have smaller, more expensive camera batteries or a special rechargeable battery like the elph than a bulky camera.

s230 has a 2x optical zoom versus 3x optical zoom on
the a70.
so you get a better zoom for a little extra size.

Ordered on 4/10 and just received it an hour ago. Packing was very poor. But camera works fine. Slipped in the 128MB SimpleTech and tested movie mode at 640x480, no lags at all. Great camera.

Just got mine with the SanDisk 256MB CF card. I capped 2 of the 30s 640x480 movies fine with this card. movies come out to about 20MB. Doesn't look like the rebate is still going on though, no more link. I really like the size of this cam, fits my hand perfectly, the Elph is too small for me to use comfortably. A bit too big for pants pocket, but would be great in a cargo pocket.

I am using 128MB SimpleTech in this camera and it's working fine. See review here SimpleTech is much faster than the SanDisk. They are also the same price at Dell but SimpleTech has additional rebates starting from $10-$50. However, both cards seem to be fast enough for the A70 as quikah has pointed out. You should notice speed differences if you plan to use a flash card reader in your PC, especially USB 2.0 versions.
