Just got back from Fry's with my new 200gb drive
Sadly I think mine is only a 1 year warranty, not sure though, becuse I already stashed it away.
Where do I find the warranty info btw?

if your warranty doesn't come up at 5 years keep your receipt, anything bought after that date will get 5 years as well. that date was picked because segate started shipping 5 year drives earlier, and all the 1 year drives should have sold out by then.

Most drives are made in China now, and what a joke that is. China has al1 ways made crap and still makes crap. I have had more electronics failures in the past 5 years then my entire life previous, and I am talking about a failure rate. over 90% of those failures were with China made stuff. It is sad, but true. China currently makes crap. Taiwan is ok, but mainland China = unreliable.

The silver lining is that hopefully this trend will continue and when the war comes their armaments will fail so much it will cripple them..

I got one today and saw all the talk on 5yr/1yr warranty. The ad says retail, and the box looks retail, but the drive says "This drive is manufactured by Seagate for OEM distribution. For product information or technical support, please contact your system OEM." Also the box sleeve says "one year warranty", and no warranty registration card in the box. The Industry Fry's had lots of them this afternoon, all the same. I do not think this is a retail 5yr warranty drive. But I think it is still a hot deal!

I ran the numbers on the Seagate web site and it came back with a five year warranty, but the page that reported that also showed a slightly different part number and model number, so I am not sure. I don't think they would give five years on an OEM part.

Well, are you referring to this hot deal or what? Not all hard drives are made in China. In fact, most of them are made in Thailand and Indonesia. For example, Hitachi hard drives are pretty much exclusively made in Thailand. Maxtor doesn't make hard drives in China as far as I know, but last time I bought their hard drive was 2 years ago.

In term of "Made in China," yes it is a total crap. I definitely trust most on "Made in Japan", and then "Made in Taiwan".. and then "Made in Thailand"....and the last is "Made in China"

One last note: Apple iPod 4th Generation is assembled in China.....but it still works well for me. Nonetheless, it is inevitable for US companies to lower their cost by outsourcing the production to countries like China. I wish they would not do so, or if they have to, try to avoid China as much as possible. Oh well

I have not bought anything from Outpost before. What's "Call for availability"? Do they eventually ship the item and how soon?

Actually my drive also has a different part number than what is listed on the seagate warranty page. But the model number is the same... Hopefully I get the 5 year.

I have this same question. Does anyone know if the invoice date is the order date, or when they ship?

I'll probably just call tomorrow and find out.

Fry's in Industry, CA has about 20 on the floor. They are stacked up behind the RAM/CPU Disservice counter on the East side of the store.

Yep...you'll need XP SP1A or SP2 to get the full 200GB, otherwise you'll have to partition it.
