got this e-mail from my networking class instructor..

"Now, if you can establish a connection (PING) between 2 PC's in a different
network via a switch/router (that I will set up), you don't have to take the
written exam and you automatically get an A for the final grade."

can someone please show me how do this.. step by step..???
i really need this A

also.. please show me how to
install the TCP/IP protocol and put the IP address, mask and gateway on windows 98.

thanks.. pls help. the test is this thursday!!!!

Edit:

another e-mail from the instructor. other students have been asking him question about this challenge.

"Gals,

What I meant by the comprehensive challenge was to have 2 Microsoft 2000 Pro
being in two different networks having their own router interface and I need
them to ping each other.

I will configure the router and you guys do the cabling and IP settings.

Anymore questions?"

please ignore the tcp/ip part if this is the first time you read this thread. thanks. pls. i need you guys' help and suggestions.

How in the world could you get an "A" in a networking class and not know how to do that??

ok, I must definitely be misunderstanding this question.

As far as I can tell, bridge the switches between the two networks with this switch/router that your instructor will set up(is there a catch here?)...with cables going into the appropriate uplink ports, Set up the IPs statically, then ping away.

start->control panel->network
add - protocol - microsoft(?, it's been a while) - tcp/ip

click on the tcp/ip protocol once installed, edit whatever properties you have in there and reboot.

It's been a while...what'd I miss?

ok well i havent played with this in a few years but ill give it a go. ok and your comp sci book or an MCSE networking essentials study guide would give you all this info.

tcp/ip is easy. if your NIC is installed then go into networking properties and choose to add a protocol. choose microsoft and then tcp/ip. after that tcp/ip should show up in the network properties dialogue box at which time you select it and click the properties button. from there you can enter all the information.

the connection over a switch im gonna guess at cause ive forgotten. it happens when you dont do it for a couple years.

setup the two pcs with tcp/ip on their respective networks. you should just need to add the gateway ip into network properties which i think will allow you to talk accross the switch/router. then you just use the ping command with the other computers ip address or computer name.

good luck

oh and if you cant do the first part on your own, theres no way you deserve and A

well, I'm still thinking we all misunderstood the original question. As far as the win98 question, everyone is entitled to forget things. If this question really is what I think it is, I pity the fool who can't install tcp/ip.

And, instead of wasting your breath on belittling the poor guy, you could atleast wish him luck. Everyone has to learn sometime, somewhere. It might as well be now. :| You're right when you say that there is a stupid ass here -but it isn't Tung :|

Good luck on that, Tung. One question, though. If you put two computers on two completely separate networks, they won't be pingable, right? I mean, it's only possible to ping to other computers on your network, right? If you've got another computer on another network and you're trying to send a packet to that computer, the computers HAVE to be networked some how in order for the packet to get to the other PC.

Am I wrong? So, basically, the teacher is saying that if you can do the impossible, you deserve an "A" in the class?

Nik <-- feels stupid right now -and I work for AT&TBI! :Q

I think it's more along the lines of:

In this room, we have network A, with computer 1 within it. In that room across the hall, we have network B with computer 2 within it. Here's a switch/router and some cable. Now this question could be of varying degrees of difficulty.

What if Network A is ethernet and network B is token ring?

or it could be as it seems, all ethernet cables and switches.

well, here's the part that baffles me. If it's easiest scenario, you don't need another switch or router at all. Just a crossover cable from one network's switch into the uplink port of the other network's switch.

the idea im getting is that its a peer to peer network setup with a router/switch inbetween the two computers. i think his instructor just wants them to understand the purpose of a router and how to use them when setting up bigger networks in the future. so while the router isnt necessary, i think his instructor wants him to use it for practice.

my best guess

what type of network is this? are these just two lans? or is it two separate servers? more info dude, this could be anything, but it sounds like you could just take both networks and make one huge lan, then you will have a "internet" of sorts and you can ping at pretty much anything you want.

LOL! He doesn't know how to do it. He's stringing you guys along.

As soon as you give him another step, he says he already knew that.

I say let him fail if he can't handle it by himself.

It's really hard for a professor to give you an A to ask people for solution... I mean it hurts when it goes along, when you come out to get a job in any network company and you have no idea how to set up a network.... I feel bad as a employer... the professor/school feels ashame too.
