UPDATED: 5-25-2006 There is only the intern position left, however, analyst will open up soon I believe, keep an eye out on the major job sites and tribjobs.com

UPDATED: I believe there is one more opening for a helpdesk analyst. Here is the official job posting.

Help Desk Analyst, 3rd Shift: The Analyst provides first level technical support to Chicago Tribune customers through the 24 x 7 Technical Support Help Desk. This position utilizes formal Incident Handling and case escalation procedures. The Analyst will provide technical support for the company's desktop computer environment, including desktops, laptops, printers, hand-held devices, and connectivity to the company's networks. This Analyst will monitor CTC's critical production systems and take the necessary appropriate actions as needed. The Analyst also participates in projects as needed.

They are also hiring for an intern. Here is official job posting.

Technical Service Desk Intern: The Intern provides first level technical support to Chicago Tribune customers through the 24 x 7 Technical Support Help Desk. This position utilizes formal Incident Handling and case escalation procedures. You will provide technical support for the company's desktop computer environment, including desktops, laptops, printers, hand-held devices, and connectivity to the company's networks. Will monitor CTC's critical production systems and take the necessary appropriate actions as needed. Also participates in projects as needed. Must be proficient in Microsoft Operating Systems and Microsoft Office applications. MCP, A+ or other technical certifications are beneficial. Clarify or other Customer Relationship Management software experience beneficial. Must be flexible to work any shift, including nights, holidays, and weekends.

-------------------------------------

I work for the Chicago Tribune Company and we are hiring for at least 2, maybe 3 helpdesk analysts. I do not have the official job posting text but here are the requirements.

BS degree
Willing to work in a flexible schedule, including holidays and weekends. 1st, 2nd or 3rd shift
Rotate in an on-call schedule
Provide 24x7 support
Have some technical support experience
Be able to provide friendly customer service

edit: no relocation assistance for this position, prefer local candidates so we can interview asap.

Even thought this is 3rd shift, new people will get hired and you will move eventually to 1st shift (most likely within 1 year). This is 100% phone support in a very broad variety of systems. I will be doing the first round interviews and if your resume looks good, I will pass it on to the hiring manager to setup the interview with me or someone else.

INSTRUCTIONS: please email me your resume to be directly at noxipoo AT gmail DOT com in either Microsoft Word or PDF format. I will not be keeping track of thread, private messages, or forums postings for your resume. Please title your email, Chicago Tribune Helpdesk Analyst. Add Intern at the end if you are looking for that instead.

DISCLAIMER: Nothing I put here is official, get the real job description if someone from the Tribune contacts you after you send me your resume. I am not representing the company and am doing this as I know people are on here are looking for work. This is a full time position with benefits. I do not get referral bonus for this, I am not doing this for profit.

That's interesting. I work for a company that takes ads for newspapers nationwide. I believe our company has a contract with the Chiacgo Tribune and we take classifieds for them.

I can't discuss the pay, there are different grades for different titles and I do not know them.

OdiN: all of chicago tribune technology requires a BS degree, how else do you expect to move up in the company?

its not my company, its not my requirment. and we wouldn't hire someone with 10 years experience for the helpdesk, you would just leave as soon as you got another job. last 3 people we hired were straight out of college. if you don't like the requirements, look else where, I didn't post this for people like you obviously.

All I can say is helpdesk SUCKS.

But for those out of college who can't find a "real job" yet, it's a good opportunity to learn. I've been doing helpdesk for the last year (hopefully only for another 2-3 weeks until I start my new job) but i've learned a HUGE amount about applications I normally didn't use to their full potential (outlook, office, etc).

I'm confused by your post. Are you upset that you have all that experience and certs and still work in helpdesk because you don't have a degree? Personally, if you have all that and you're still stuck in support, you're doing something wrong or the IT industry sucks where you live.

No, it doesn't.

It's my chosen career. I've been doing it for 10 years now and absolutely love it! The community that builds in nearly any internal help desk is awesome. I've had jobs doing desktop (deskside I guess is the new trendy word?) and babysitting an AS400 and dozens of NT servers and was bored to tears. Even when I was building the corporate intranet I got bored quickly. But the constant customer contact, the atmosphere of the desk, etc, all blow away darn near anything else shy of waiting tables (which I also loved, but it didn't pay anywhere near what I'm making now even when I worked in a NICE restaurant in a resort town.)

Help desk work is cool as long as your company doesn't have super restrictions (like StateFarm---almost EVERY SENTENCE is scripted). Basically, what it all comes down to in helpdesk work is people worshipping your genius and complimenting/thanking you for owning their computer skills.
