Schnieds: How do you tune Cleartype? I just see a checkbox to turn it on or off in the effects tab. I think I need to tune it too.

I found the following link where this would be applied:

Cleartype Adjustments
I couldn't get this process to run with my Mozilla browser, so I had to use I.E. to get it to work. Needless to say, I wasn't surprised. Schnields, Thank you!! - The corrections that I selected and made with my Planar Pl191M-BK now look awesome!! Thanks again for sharing such a valuable contribution to this forum!

Heh... thanks for the praise Wje, sharing and getting advice is what's it's about. Although when someone recognizes that specifically it makes it all the better.

I clicked on the link that you provided wje, but that isn't the same one I used. It looks like it is the same thing, but it is obviously two different sites, so I will post the link I used here anyway. (No disrespect to your link intended wje )

ClearType Tuning

Glad to hear that little bit of info helped you guys out...

I am still planning on posting my full thoughts here on the comparison of the 1900FP vs. the Planar sometime soon....

The two sites for ClearType tuning corresponds to non-SP1 and SP1 I think. I believe if you have SP1, you can tune ClearType to BGR striping if that's what your LCD has. The link in my previous post is for SP1.

Thanks hongman for telling me that your monitor tilts, I got the courage to push mine down and lo and behold, it worked just fine. I may have never figured that out without someone telling me that it was possible. On another note, the plate where it is screwed on the mount on back looks to be perfectly square. Without taking a ruler and measuring, you may be able to screw it on sideways without it touching the base.

forcesho,

I don't know if I would agree with you that the reponse time of the 1900FP (Samsung 191T) is greater than 25ms. I have the Planar 191M, which is also rated at 25ms, and I can tell you that the 1900FP is much better. In fact, other than when I initially turned on the monitor (before the display had a chance to warm up I think) I have never seen any ghosting whatsoever on the 1900FP. The 1900FP beats the Planar when it comes to response time in fast moving motion and graphics hand down. I also have a friend that own the 2000FP, which is a very high end model, which he thinks is equal in performance to the 1900FP.

Overall I am trully confused as to why some people see such severe ghosting with the panel. I have not tried CS on it, but with Unreal Tournament 2003, RTCW, Serious Sam SE, and Jedi Knight I can say that the panel is trully brilliant.

Do you notice ghosting in anything other than CS? What video card / connection (DVI or analog) are you using?

I guess the $764 reflects the 15% discount that they are offering. Dell must have a boatload of computer peripherals in stock they way they are currently offering incentives. If you have the cash, the bargains are certainly out there.

I think it's important for people to note that 25ms does not equal to NO ghosting. All it means is that a 25ms LCD will perform better than say a 50ms LCD. Also, doesn't the amount of ghosting depend on how many frames per second you're running at? If owner 1 and owner 2 have the same LCD and owner 1 has a vid card that runs at 100 FPS at 1280x1024 and owner 2 has a vid card that runs at 50 FPS at 1280x1024, I would think owner 1 would see more ghosting. Correct me if I'm wrong.

No I dont think the FPS has anything to do with ghosting because there is a max that the lcd can refresh the pixel rates.....the 25ms means that a pixel can go from completely off to completely on to completely off in 25ms....as you can see the lower the time the quicker the pixel can go to black....the longer the pixel takes to go to black the more trails you have...

.... so the more frames you need to display in a second, the faster you need your pixel response to be. No?

Hmmm... I guess that it would depend on what you would consider to be "ghosting." I personally see NO ghosting on the 1900FP, and would choose it over a top of the line Trinitron CRT for gaming and day of the week. The picture is crisper, everything is sharper, and there is not ghosting that I can detect.

It does take a little bit to get used to the way that an LCD "feels" while you are playing a game, it is a bit different than a CRT. But I wouldn't call that ghosting, I think that is just part of the technology.

I am really not trying to debate the matter, as it really is a personal opinion. However, I don't want people to not get such a fine LCD because they are worried about gaming looking horrible. Like I said, personally I would take this 1900FP over a nice perfect flat CRT any day of the week....

No offense Schneids but if you are saying you see absolutely no ghosting playing games on the 1900fp you need to get your eyes checked. UT2003 actually I see lots of ghosting. I switched from a top of the line sony CRT and i can tell you that for simply game playing the CRT will give you a better picture. But the conveniences of an LCD far outweigh that one aspect that CRTs hold so that is why I switched. But please dont say there is no ghosting as everyone knows there is ghosting on EVERY LCD.

Yes, I am stating that I do not see any ghosting on the 1900FP... like I said the motion is different when playing a FPS on an LCD over a CRT, but I do not consider that ghosting. I define ghosting as objects on the screen leaving motion trails behind them when they move. i.e. If I move my field of view really fast in Unreal Tournament 2003 there would be some streaking and motion trails left behind as my gun and the scenery changed. I see none of that on the 1900FP...

We may have to agree to disagree on this one... as it seems from the thread of death at Arstechnica, this very topic has been debated since the dawn of time.

No I will not agree to disagree If you move your field of view really fast un UT2003 you will definitley see trails. If you dont then we do not have the same monitor.

i've actually found unreal2k3 pretty good. not to say there is NO ghosting, but not really noticeable to me unless im paying close attention.

on the other hand, CS is just terrible. right click with knife you can see it well, as well as any lights on walls, etc.

i dont know why that would be though. maybe just choice of colors?

Actually I have the Samsung 191T which I assumed is the same monitor as your Dell 1900FP. And I definitely see ghosting playing ut2k3. Can anyone else confirm whether they see ghosting on the 1900FP with UT2k3? BTW what resolution you running ut2k3 in? 1280x1024 right?

Jhoto you must be right. It must have to do with the colors. On bf1942 i notice very little of it. On ut2k3 a little bit more. On GTA3 none whatsoever. And as you said on CS lots of people notice alot of it. I know a simple solution to this problem. When a game that you like is being developed. Just make sure the developers have flat panels

Here is my setup:

Dell 1900FP
Unreal Tournament 2K3 Full Edition
1280x1024
32 bit color
DVI on a GF4 4200
P4 2.0 @ 2.3
512 MB Mem.

I would try out CS, but I don't think I have a half-life CD anymore... so far I have tested the following with the above game settings with no ghosting:

Unreal 2K3 Full
Jedi Knight 2
Serious Sam SE
RTCW
Warcraft 3
NWN

kinda off topic,, but i don't think dell 1702f or p .. is samsung made..

samsung 172t looks similar.. but specwise it has different contrast ratio .. 500:1 over 350:1 for dell one..

or maybe lazy dell webmaster forgot to change it
