WD1000JB isn't much faster than other IDE HDD's. You won't find an IDE drive much faster than 8.9ms right now and it's still stuck at 7,200RPM. The only factor that makes that HDD slightly faster than average IDE HDD is the 8MB buffer. I'm sure it is technicallly possible to build a 10,000 or 15,000RPM IDE, but the way capitalistic system works, they're not going to do that, because it results in diminished revenue for them since people will buy the cheaper fast IDE drives instead of their expensive SCSI drives.

. . . or a sustained rate much over 40MB. My ATA100 drive is 37MB/ps. I just read that the WD1000JB can sustain rates of 50MB/ps.

Someone pointed out that if you wanted to build the fastest system you should wait a bit for things to shake out a bit. That may not be a
bad idea. I won't start on my next computer until next fall. We'll probably start to see Serial ATA HD's. The serial ATA standard starts at 150MB/ps and ramps up to 600MB/ps. And, the cost for these HD's is expected to be on par with paralell ATA drives. SerialATA.org Or, at least a lot closer to current ATA drives than SCSI.

The newest P4's will not be be available until later this year (2 - 3 months or so?)I'm guessing that AMD will not let Intel get too far out in front on the MHz issue, performance ratings aside, in the XP line, Clawhammer, Sledgehammer, ReallyBiggieHammer, etc. Also I think the new Nvidia nForce board memory performance is intriguing. Excellent benchmarks and I like the dual channel memory arcitecture (up to 3.9GB bandwidth), we might see it get a revision or two. Maybe other
boardmakers will implement a similar design.

Jeez! What am I saying. When will things not change in this field. Why wait?

i don't know about SCSI raid but IDE raid isn't magical, period. It does increase the performance (let's say you want to transfer 2 big files to another computer on the network at the same time) by quite a lot but a SCSI drive probably beats it. I don't feel safe running my IBMs for raid as i screwed and RMAed 2 of them.

as for a fastest computer, IMO it's unnecessary but here will be my ideal set up for ya:
AMD athlon MP 1900+x2 (pentium 4 doesn't support MP does it? i forgot)
3GB registered DDR PC 2100 ram
tyan MP mobo
sound blaster audigy platinum EX
geforce 4 4600
LVD SCSI3 adaptec controller
yamaha SCSI3 burner (forgot the speed)
pioneer DVD drive
seagate 15000rpm 18.6 GB SCSI HD
2 maxtor 80GB 7200rpm drives with raid 0 setup for storage
lian-li server case (as seen on pcmods.com)
enermax 510W PSU

this is my dream machine... how much does it cost??? probably a sh!t load of money but it'll kick major a$$
