government plans to scrap C4C

It's not scrapped. They just want to make sure it doesn't go beyond the $1B allocated budget.
It wasn't meant to be a permanent program.

it was to be offered from July 1st to November 1st or until funds ran out... the program started monday on its day 1 of the 4 month program, and 3 days later, it ran out of funding... yup... awesome job...

That just means that many people took their clunkers and bought more fuel efficient vehicles. So its great that the program was effective even though it ended quickly.

I don't see a problem. It was supposed to last until November or until funds ran out whichever came first, and it lasted until funds ran out, which came first. Sounds like it ran its course as intended.

Exactly. They wanted to give $1 Billion to encourage people to buy cars. they did it. I fail to see why this is a failure on the government's part. For once the government actually accomplished what they set out to do and did it even faster than planned.

Some people just want to bash government reflexively, try to make sense later, or not at all. I love how small government proponents are bashing the government for not allocating more funding to this program to last longer.

a bit off topic, but can my dad cosign on my purchase so that I can trade his car in for the credit?

I think the program has ended. Seems it was too popular and the $1B funding has been spent.

This has nothing to do with helping anyone (it's putting people into debt that couldn't afford a new car payment more than anything) and everything to do with a bunch of liberal environmentalist nutcases hoping to destroy a few barbaric V6s and V8s reduce their numbers for good. I hope all the cars they destroy are just poor running 4 bangers that were exchanged for V6s and V8s with better mileage. I should have found some piece of crap carburetor 4 banger and trade it in for a SRT-8 with better mileage.

Maybe when your rant is over, you can read the fine print that states that you need to have owned the car for a certain period of time (a year, IIRC).

My S-10 meets the requirements, but I dont think of it as a clunker, and its worth a lot more than 3500 bucks. Damn. I was hoping to offload a huge mistake at the governments expense.
Maybe I need to marry a congressmans sister instead.

Yeah, but then you'd have a criminal for a brother-in-law.

Why is a Miata godlike when most of them do 0-60 in a time which would get shamed by the RX-8? Believe me, I'm no fanboy, but to see a good car get trashed for no good reason just makes me scratch my head. There wasn't much good competition for a light, RWD, sporty vehicle at the time and it brought what the S2k brought to the table for much cheaper while being way more practical.

And Skoorb, if you're buying the auto version, let's face it, you're not buying it for its speed

Arkaign, what car at its price point does the Speed3 *not* dominate? It's apples to oranges outside of performance numbers, no FWD car can hold a candle to the RX-8's balanced, neutral chassis. And RWD > FWD

Actually it's really just there to stimulate the auto industry. The 20-30K vehicles that are being taken off the road are either (a) not polluting that much because they're fairly recent or (b) are so old and shitty that they were practically just a statue in the person's yard and weren't polluting in the first place since they weren't being driven. This won't make a dent in oil usage or pollution, it's just transferring the debt of the auto makers to the consumers.

Still, you're buying anyway and you qualify, hot deal

I'd rather pay the $4500 out of pocket on principle than make some government employed hippy smile by destroying a perfectly good vehicle, unless it was truly a clunker with a rod through the block, rusted frame, blue exhaust, and interior that smelled like cat piss that would be put out of it's misery and actually recycled for good use.

Just saw a video of a mid-2000's grand cherokee that looked to be in decent shape get blown up. Waste of a perfectly good vehicle, paid for by the taxpayers of the country. Not to mention the billows of smoke pouring from the car. Probably polluting the air more than the vehicle normally would have during its normal lifetime. "Go green" yeah right :disgust:

GOOD JOB OBAMA AND CO. FOR WASTING OUR TAX DOLLARS YET AGAIN :|

Depends on how many miles it had on it and exactly what year the model is.

People seem to forget that this isn't just about the so called green (better MPG)...this program is two fold: Better MPG....and.....a part of the stimulus to get the country moving again (i.e. spur consumers to buy cars). 2/3 (sadly) of GDP = consumer spending.

I personally think that this is one of the few times that the money wasn't actually wasted (like most of the other 787 billion was or is being).

First of all that is not a "mid-2000's" (which means 2005-ish) Grand Cherokee. Judging from the grille angle, that could be as early as a '99 which is already 10 years old. My 14-year old SUV "looks in decent shape" too but I'm about to clunk it for a variety of reasons, including emissions/consumption/safety (no airbags and horrid crash ratings for even the front compartment).
