Sorry to be offtopic but I'm hoping you knowledgeable folk can help me.

I'm 6'0" and I've lost 50lbs (255->205) recently and of course my weight loss has slowed now. This is mostly with excercise, no Atkins or anything.

Now I'm looking to lose more weight (down to about 170) while adding muscle. However, I do not want to be "ripped" at all. Just lean.. maybe "cut" is the right word? Anyhow reading all this info about protein has made me wonder if I'm not getting as much protein as I need, as I eat very little meat.

What supplements/vitamins would you guys recommend to someone like me?

BCAA are branched chain amino acids that are included in whey protein... glutamine is another amino acid that is in whey...

dextrose is a complex sugar that you can find in some foods... do a little research... I think banana's have a good amount... the dextrose is to spike insulin which inhibits cortisol from breaking down proteins as fast... thus your body has more to work with right after workout... so its good to get an insulin spike after workout, but to steer clear of it most the rest of the day

So If I just buy a good brand of Hydrolyzed whey, they it should contain all the EAA and BCAA's I need?

And If I want some dextrose I can maybe blend a banana into my drinks right?

Ok. So um...what good brands of protein should I look to purchase?

Both are important. What is "lame" is cutting and pasting the results of the hard work of others, and then leaving the ostensible impression that the hard work was yours.

Perhaps someday you will attend a "L33T UNiV3R51+Y " and understand this.

While we are discussing "L4ME," more appropriate Netiquette would be to provide a link so that those interested in the arcanery of soy metabolism might read further, rather than hijacking the thread with a 200-line plagiarized dump.

point to me exactly where i formally stated i authored all the articles or even suggested so? BTW i do attend college, a rather prestigious one, but where you attend doesn't always equate to intelligence (case in point: you think athletes got into harvard, yale, stanford, etc. because of academics?). what gets me is you attempt to label me as unintelligent by repeatingly bringing up the issue of plaigarism, when in nowhere in my post did i ever credit "kotix" as the author of the stated works. OK so i'll give u the title and author of a research that was conducted, but leave out the actual study. what good does that do? If you had a more relative argument about the effects of soy, rather than ridicule me for not following MLA format, perhaps you would bring up the issue about how credible the sources of information are, look at the references to see where these studies were conducted and if applicable, see whether these research facilities and medical instiutions are actually reputable. your posts have nothing to do with the topic of the thread, but to point me out as some pseudo-plagiarist with no conception of intelligence. how is that conducive to this thread?

here's a link for you, but with your decorative and superfluous vocabulary as well as your emphasis on identifying plagiarism, i've assumed that you're perhaps some english/humanities major who wouldn't have the foggiest idea of biochemisty/endocrinology, or in your words, 'arcanery' which isn't even an actual word.

Seizure, I currently have 2- 5 lb tubs of Optimum Whey. People that have more experience than I with this stuff say that its some of the best stuff you can find. You're prolly lookin 20-30 bucks per 5 pound tub depending on how muc shopping you do. it dissolves pretty easy and actually tastes pretty good. I read up and it has all the protein both in BCAA and EAA proteins that you would need. Blending a banana in should do the trick as far as dextrose, but check that out before you do it, im not 100% sure that bananas have lots of dextrose.

Basically, whatever you end up buying, make sure its low in carbs, low in fat and low in calories, optimum's is

So accordingly to that article. I'm suppose to make 3 different shakes? Drink one before? wait 15 minutes, then during? then after?
THat's a lot of protein and stuff? Or am I suppose to take some sort of BCCA/EAA supplement like a pill or something. And save the protein shake till after the workout?

180 Pound Person.

Preworkout
0.15-0.2 X bodyweight (kg) in EAA= 12-16 grams
0.4 X bodyweight (kg) in High Glycemic Carbs= 33 grams
EXTRA BCAA= 5 grams

Total Grams = 50-54
During Workout
0.15-0.2 X bodyweight (kg) in BCAA= 12-16 grams
0.4 X bodyweight (kg) in High Glycemic Carbs= 33 grams

Total Grams = 45-49
Post Workout
0.4 X bodyweight (kg) of Hydrolyzed Whey Protein= 33 grams
0.8 X bodyweight (kg) in High Glycemic Carbs= 65 grams
EXTRA BCAA= 5 grams

Total Grams = 103

alright, the BCAA's and EAA's are protein, just a specific type... included in the whey... so about a scoop before and a scoop after would give you around the total set of that "3 shake plan" ... theres 30g of protein in most powders, about half BCAA and about half EAA, so taking a scoop before workout, and then a scoop after workout with some sort of GI carbs should do the trick.

Unless you're training like Ivan Drago from Rocky you dont need to adhere to that plan in your post exactly verbatin, its just what one person finds to work well.

eating before working out doesnt seem like a good idea, remember we're suppose to wait before swimming after a meal. Anyways, i've never had good results with drinking anything other than water before a workout, maybe its just me.

Also,

Cremefilled, stop busting his chops, its not really plagerizing cuz he never claimed it to be his own, i'd think he'd have better things to do than to churn out a paper for forum. This is lax, community environment. I don't want to see you bust on me if i copied the description or review of a product from some site that i read.

Kotix, ur post was a bit long... like real long, some links would be helpful. its so long that i read the first paragraph then merrily skipped over the rest.

What a damn good thread! I'm feeling I've joined a private high-class club by reading those very high quality post.

To get the price down to near wholesale level, what you'd say to build up a site to serve the community from this thread.

Here's my thoughts:

1. List the best of the best, most desirable products, as listed in storm's original post - Whey protein, animal pak (multivitamin), glutamine, creatine, amino acid capsules, and weight gainer, etc.

2. Contact the manufactories of each select products for wholesale/bulk price. (sounds like the idea of group purchase.)

3. Setup a site to sell those products at wholesale price to us from this thread.

Please bear with my ignorance.

I use designer whey (in water), i was wondering is their anything that tastes better than this (in water only), and is of better quality or more effective. Price is not too much of a concern. It must mix well in water and taste good. Thanks to any and all that reply. storm897 if you can please email me the coupon that would be great res05a8n@verizon.net thanks

I'd like to hear some of your guys thoughts on weight gainers/ meal replacements. THe hardest thing for me is getting enough protein and calories every 3 hours. What do you guys do/use? I started working out about 8 weeks ago and went from 185-195. I figure I'll try for 220 and then cut down and try to lean up a bit. I swear the hardest part about training is making the commitment to GAIN weight. I used to be so afraid of putting on fat before that I'd go nowhere in the gym. Now that I've actually commited to gaining weight no matter what I've really noticed results. Another thing that is really weird is that a lot of times you have to eat when you aren't even hungry! I always used to think that your body will just make you more hungry when working out. Mine didn't. I had to literally make myself eat. Now I'm having trouble because I'm almost eating twice as much food and getting sick of eating the same stuff all the time. I need some inbetween meal supplaments to break the monotony!

Thanks

I disagree. A pre and during shake are actually better then a post drink. Read the post HERE. I did this my self and have found that it works excellent. I take 1 Pre shake that last a little into my workout and then take another shake right after that last to the end of my workout.
I sip on these shakes all the time during working out. The two shakes I take consist of the same thing (found below).

In each shake I take:
Hydrolyzed Whey Protein = 37 grams
High Glycemic Carbs (Dextrose)= 73 grams
EXTRA BCAA = 5 grams
Creatine = 5 Grams

I weigh 202 / 6'0.
I bought dextrose to use only during my workout shakes.

One more thing. I got a message regarding which shake to take to gain mucscle. Taking shakes by itself wont gain mucsle as you can see from these many information posts people have posted. It takes a good gym routine, diet, and sleep to gain mass.

After reading up on another forum regarding bodybuilding (b o d y b u i l d i n g . c o m) I changed my diet and routine. I was overtraining and didnt eat correctly.

Currently I eat 6 meals a day and 3 protein shakes. Remeber you body grows outside the gym.

Another person private messaged me his gym schedule. He spent 2.5 hours in the gym 5 days a week. That is to much time in the gym. Try to hit your muscles hard in 1 hour and leave. This guy is certainly overtraining. I just wanted to answer in this thread not to makes the guy feel bad but to show other people who may have a similar routine that you have to balance a good workout, with diet, and sleep. Sorry if I sound like im beating an issue thats obvious, but obviously no everyone know due to the private messages I got.

Thanks again to all those knowledgable people who posted.

Do you take two of the same shakes as combined above? Do you mix it with water or milk?
And where do I get Dextrose, besides bananas. (I think bananas has dextrose)

I bought my dextrose HERE. Easypricematch doesnt have dextrose.
I take my shakes with water. Milk slows the absortion of the whey protein. I take the shakes seperately. I put my whey powder, dextrose, BCAA powder, and creatine in a ziplock bag. I bring two of these bags with me. Each containing the same thing found above. Before I drive to the gym I fill the water bottle with water. I then pour one of the bags into the bottle and shake. Then I drive to the gym and sip on my shake. Once I get there I workout and one the first shake is done, I start on the second shake (with water again).

I order 10lbs of whey protein and it cost $40.84. If you private message I can email you an additional 5% off coupon code.
Copied from another site to explain how this website works:
ODpunisher (from big fold)
How this works is that after you add one of their products to your cart, it allows you to insert the url of any website that has that product for cheaper than them. They also ask you for that site's price and when you hit the pricebust button it automatically calculates the new price. I assume they verify this so don't try making some phony website to pm.

Hey, sounds like you know what you're talking about (along with everyone else here =)

I'm 17 right now, 18 in 2 weeks. I currently weigh 185 (on my home scale) 190 on the scale at the gym. I started lifting about 4 months ago, but I'm not really sure if what I'm doing is right. I'm working on my upper body only right now, as for some reason, I have a very weak upper body, but a very powerful lower body. This is probably from running, as I used to run about 4 miles a day. Of course, now I'm a tad overweight. I have plenty of fat around my waist and belly. My friends call me the fattest skinny kid they know. Anyways, for working out, I usually spend about an hour in the gym, sometimes a little more. I alternate between doing chests and arms every day. So far, I've made good gains, but I've slowed on chests. So, I decided to pick up a tub of Whey protein from Costco. It's a 6 lb. tub I believe, comes in vanilla and chocolate. What I've done to make shakes (only made one so far....tried just mixing with milk and stirring, but it didn't work) is add about one and a half glasses of 2% milk, a whole banana, and about 30g of protein in the Whey powder. I drink this right after I work out. Should I be drinking more of it before and during my workout? I really don't want to overdo it as this is my first time on any sort of supplement, and I wouldn't want to mess up anything.
I should probably say that my goal IS to get ripped. I want to get large. But at the same time, I think I should probably lose some weight right now. I will be starting to run again (just 10 minutes worth every day until I get into the groove again) so should I continue eating normally? I'm just afraid that if I add yet another shake to my daily diet, I'll begin gaining lots of weight. For me, as long as the weight is in muscle mass, that's okay, but I really gotta get rid of this spare tire around me.

Any suggestions, pointers, helpful tips would be appreciated.

Thanks guys!

Eric1285, I would definitely work the lower body, it has larger muscle groups than your upper, and you're working out too frequently every day doesn't give your muscles a chance to rest. Also a protein shake shouldn't raise your caloric intake by much if you are eating properly. Protein shakes shouldn't necessarily be taken for taste but it's always a plus Mixing it with a hand blender helps alot, it makes it a smoother consistency, and easier to take down but try not to mix too much into it unless you are looking to add more calories to it by adding things such as oatmeal. My personal preference is to take a protein shake in the morning with my oatmeal, preworkout, then postworkout. In terms of cardio, high impact is the best 10 minutes doesn't sound like quite enough, unless you're sprinting for the whole time. Losing fat starts with changing your diet, measure the calories and eliminate excess in terms of empty calories which you intake now. But definitely work your whole body, there's no point in having only beach muscles with chicken legs.
