Thanks for the link! Very helpful for sure.

I noticed however that the NEC 1300A has the bitsetting/booktype feature. Was that enabled through a firmware update? If so, I may just bit and hope for a firmware update in the future, even if hacked which enables the feature. Is this even possible?

Any advice or insight in this is very much appreciated!

I noticed that the Liteon (451) sells for 107 on newegg. Now considering you can just flash this thing to 8x, isn't it just worth it to get the liteon and not the NEC because of the bitsetting feature?

Would the NEC 2500 be good for ripping my purchased dvds? What about the LiteOn 4x? I've read in some other threads not to use your dvd recorder for ripping, so does that mean a dvd/cdrw combo would be better for ripping? I have just bought an NEC 2500 and want to get a good dvd ripper....either another dvd recorder, dvd/cdrw combo, or just a dvd player. Any suggestions? thanks, robert

my 2500A just shipped from NewEgg today. Can't wait. It'll replace my Optirite the I'm passing on to my brother.

I'll have to find some good, fast media once my next rebate check comes.

The black face OEM 411s is down below a hundred ($98 shipped) at Newegg. I think those are somewhat more difficult to flash to 8x but it supports bitsetting with a supported (OEM) firmware. Depends on how much risk you want to take.

Too bad the 451's Wal-Mart had are gone (only a pair of 401's for $79 each clearance at the one here)

I went and bought one of the Liteon 401s that Wal-Mart had on clearance ($79). Haven't had the chance to burn anything yet but I did manage to update it to an 811 successfully (still functions and Windows sees it as an 811). Will test it out later tonight.

The procedure sounds much worse than it is...it's more the anxiety of wondering if SOMETHING will screw up that'll get you than the actual procedure.

An interesting news story:

NEC lowers OEM price of 8x DVD-Dual burners under pressure from Taiwan

NEC, the world?s largest producer of DVD burners in 2003, has reduced its OEM price for 8x DVD-Dual burners from US$110-120 at the beginning of this year to about US$95, according to Taiwanese manufacturers.

NEC, faced with increasing competition from Taiwan?s OEM makers, had little choice but to cut its price to secure OEM orders for 8x DVD-Dual burners from Dell, Hewlett-Packard (HP) and other international brands, the Taiwanese makers indicated. Taiwanese makers expect that, as OEM profitability is thinning, NEC will sooner or later follow Sony in stopping such production.

I bought mine about 2 months back (@~$130)and burned about 50 DVDs, some home movies converted from VHS and some backup DVD movies. This NEC burner kicks butt, just don't use it to rip. It is a little slow, but that is the only drawback I found. I've been using Imation 4x DVD+Rs @ 6x speed (~12 mins) and they are flawless. I only got 2 coasters so far but it could have been my fault editing the DVD content wrong.
