Never heard of the GMA-4080B

Good deal....But can anyone point me to a really good dvd recorder that is 4x and dual (+ and -)? I don't really need an 8x. I've seen many deals here on 4x, but they ones people say are really good i can't get. I live out in the middle of nowhere and can't go to a b+m store....i can only order online. Any help is appreciated! cracker1018

Installed mine on Monday night no time to review. On Tuesday night backed up 2 movies worked like a champ.
Looking for 4x media that will burn at 8x. All I had was 4x that I scored at Office Depot last week 2 25 packs for 29.99
I was able to get r+/r- to burn.

Can anyone direct me in a good quality DVD burner. I am more concerned about this thing always working, and lasting a long time then the speed of the drive. I have heard great things about Plextor. Any other brands you reccomend more then the other.

Lately there has been lots of hot deals on 4x dual burners, but none this week, so check back Sunday morning there should be at least one good deal on a 4x dual burner posted in this forum by then.

No it's not illegal to make a "backup" of a DVD that you have purchased and own; however, it is illegal to copy them from others or from blockbuster. This should be obvious and I'm sure I'm telling you something that you already know. I'm not saying not to do it b/c it's illegal however just that it is.

No it's not illegal to make a "backup" of a DVD that you have purchased and own

In Canada and most other coutries this is always true, in the US you're not allowed to break the encryption (needed to backup 99% of comercial DVDs), thanks to the DCMA.

I have run into at least one commercial DVD that wasn't encrypted. (Pure 80's The DVD)

Yeah, this kinda sucks. Bought the 708A for someone for Xmas at around $200 a week ago. If it wasn't for Neweggs restocking fee I would have returned it! Oh well, I just keep telling myself that the 708A is the superior drive.

I remember paying $200 for my 24x Yamaha

i payed $150 for my 4x pacific digital and my friend payed well over $1000 for a 2x

To burn a 4.7 GB DVD data disc will take about 14 mins to with a 4x DVD burner and about 8 or 9 mins with a 8x burner.

Verbatim Announces DVD+R DL Media at CES

Verbatim's target launch date for the media is spring 2004, and they expect that date to coincide with the availability of new recorders capable of writing dual-layer discs in DVD+R DL format. According to Verbatim, the discs will require no adjustment to existing DVD players or DVD-ROM drives to read DVD-Video content written to the DL media.

Thanks for the link. According to Verbatim they plan on releasing these DL DVDs in Spring this year, which probably means the drives as well. I wonder how much they will sell these DL drives for.

Anyway it'll drive the dual format single layer burners in price down further, but I don't think I can wait that long!

I'm going to try burning the 4X DVD-Rs at 8x tomorrow and give you guys a short review. Anybody know where to get Taiyo Yuden (TY) or Mitsubishi Chemical (MCC) 4x DVD-Rs in NYC?

I have plenty of RICOHJPN 4X Imation DVD+Rs and I know those burn at 8x.
