I just put a P2 400mhz processor in my fiance's computer to replace her 266mhz. The computer kept registering 266mhz however. Tried reboots, shut downs, check the mobo for jumpers, and the BIOS has no CPU options. A friend of mine suggested that I remove the CMOS battery and perhaps after clearing the CMOS, it would recognize the new processor.

After removing the battery for about a minute, I put it back and started up the computer. Now it wants a BIOS password. There is no way to past it. I've tried a few backdoor passwords, but none work. Here's the specs:

Compter is an NEC
About 6 years old
PhoenixBIOS 4.0 version 6.0
I'm still working on trying to find the motherboard manufacturer/model.

Any quick suggestions?

****UPDATE****

Ok, was able to clear the password and enter the BIOS settings. There was a jumper I didn't see that needed to be change from pins 1-2 to 2-3. This also allowed me to configure my processor speed. But I noticed that the processor speed options only went up to 333Mhz. I assume that's as fast as the board can support. So I set it to 333mhz, saved and restarted the computer, with the BIOS jumper set back to the normal 1-2.

Computer is still reading 266mhz. I don't see any more jumpers or switches to change to get the computer to recognize the new processor speed. Any ideas?

tolbyn, on older MB's, there was a jumper that you could move that would reset the password, not sure if this helps, but worth a look

To clear the BIOS password, keep the CMOS battery out for about a day or two (if there is a jumper on the board to clear the BIOS password, that would be ideal).

To update her machine with the PII 400, check for dip switches on the board to adjust the CPU voltage and FSB.

I will try leaving the battery out for a few days. Hopefully that works. Do you think it's possible that her mobo is capped at 266mhz and cannot be upgraded any further, as far as processor speed? In which case, the faster processor is useless.

Any suggestions on how to get the computer to recognize the new processor speed?

The mainboard is probably an old LX chipset board. You may be stuck with a bus speed of 66 mhz. 4x 66.6 is why you show 266mhz. A PII 400 needs 4x 100mhz...

You might want to find the manufacturer of the board and see if there is an updated bios. I found "award" and talked to them and they had an updated bios for my old 440BX board. When I received my new chip, I installed it with ease and, updated it without problems. I no longer have the computer but the person I sold it to was greatful that I did that. Helped out a lot. Or it just might be better for you to find a board that will handle the processor at that speed. Just might be cheaper too. As for the upgrade in BIOS was around $70.
