My drive is a Optorite dd-201. It can not burn any CD or DVD disks and has a hard time reading any disks. I called Staples to get a replacement drive because I think this drive is defective. Staples will not do anything for me because I sent in the UPC code from the box to get the rebate. Staples will not even exchange the drive. I am very upset with Staples over this and thought I should post this so others do not get trapped by Staples UPC/rebate no exchange policy. They could have sent me the drive without the box or removed the UPC code from the box before sending a replacement.

Staples Return Policy

Easy Returns.

If you?re not 100% satisfied with your Staples purchase, return it for any reason.

This is one of the big reasons companies like MIR. It gives them a reason not to take back the stock. In reality, they wouldn't be able to do much with it if they did take it back.

The trick is to test the drive out before cutting out the UPC. If it doesn't work then you take it back. If the drive breaks during the warranty period, then you will have to deal directly with the manufacturer.

You might be able to get some sort of warranty from the manufacturer.

Have you tried updating the Optorite firmware to the latest version at Optorite.com?
You also might want to check the DVD burner forums at cdfreaks.com : http://forum.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?s=238c08d3c2b24dda403f8c186dbcff98&f=61

Unless of course they check the serial #, which many will of course. Then you're screwed.

After Staples would do nothing, I got Pacific Digital tech support. They were very good and easy to get a hold of. They gave me a link to new frimware to try, which I already tried but did it again. Now I have an RMA in the works. The bad thing about it is it will take about three to four weeks before I get another drive.

The tech guy there asked were I bought the drive from and I told me Staples. He asked this a couple of times when he was asking when I bought the drive. He then said it would take a long time for the turn around and asked if I really wanted to do it. He really wanted me to return it to Staples but I told him I have no choice as Staples will not help me.

I got it and mine is OPTORITE drive.

I did the firmware update and its working fine.

Just one question. I do have HD burning feature on Nero but it wont accept my FUJI cd-r as an acceptable media. what brand CDR do I need for High Definition burning?

and after I burn it, does it work with most DVD drives? (I.e. Xbox and such).

that kinda sux...
I got it to work with my Fuji disks and it seems to work fine with optodrive.. but not with my dvd drive on same computer... from their website they say it should be compatible with most dvd drives with firmware update.. but i guess not.. oh well, i'll just use it for occasional backup ..

(Update #2) It's now selling for $29.99 AB

At Staples.com use the "Order by Catalog Number" option, LINK and use item #516162-AJ to order by Pacific Digital 4x dual DVD±RW Drive for $69.99, at checkout use the $20 off code found on Staples.com LINK , You have to add $0.01 to bring the totat to $50 to get free shipping. (OIC #1 Paper Clips #525881 $.25) and then send in the $20 MIR.

The deal: Pacific Digital 4x dual DVD±RW Drive $69.99 - $20 IR - $20 MIR = $29.99

Not likely as you are already getting it $20 lower than the price is suppose to be.

Still in stock in the L. A. area, :clock: just because it out of stock in one area doesn't mean it out of stock everywhere, :clock: but since this deal is posted all over the internet this drive will not be in stock for much longer. :clock:
