Remember that site for a free subscription for Gear and Stuff magazine?

old thread: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=40&threadid=275045

well it seems that site has exposed its partial database of people who signed up.
It was exposed, seems might have been fixed, but google cached it anyway.

See if your name is here:

gear magazine signup database

**UPDATE***

I emailed both the webmaster and the company sponsoring the free subscriptions.
Here is the response I got:

"Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We did not know that this
information was exposed. Once you fill out our subscription form it goes
directly to the magazine subscription service bureau which is Sungift. We
don't have any direct control over your subscription once you submit it.
We will however bring this matter to Sungift's attention and demand
immediate correction."

So you complain about people's personal information being available and then you post a link that has all their personal information easily available for anyone that browses these messages to view? The information you found was available to a relatively few people who ventured into the parts of the web you found this.

Quite frankly I find your actions rediculous. You've made a problem even worse.

Thanks for the heads up. Luckily my information wasn't revealed but Bob61 IS right. Before the information was somewhat disclosed to the general audience. Now that you posted this, you've done those companies seeking contact info a favor. Now they can spam every one of them because of you. I would suggest you de-link that ASAP before it gets even uglier.

Im not on the list, but I agree you should take down that link, or something you are giving out that info to everyone...

bob61, the majority of the people on that list are from here.

I didn't mirror the page and put it on AOL or anything.

Take any of those email addresses and do a search for it on google, that page will come up.
Do a search for your email address or net nickname on google and see what you come up with.

At least people who are on there can now have proof and complain to the company like i did.
Anyone familiar with a search engine can find that just by searching for their name.
I didn't unlock any secret or backdoor.

There is nothing there that isn't in the phone book or available from bigfoot.com or any other address search engine. I was showing how careless that website was with personal info. If it had CC info, I would have not posted a link, but the info on there is available from many different places.

Besides, I don't recall asking for your opinion anyway. But by giving me yours, here is mine in response:

I find your comment utterly rediculous. You've turned a public awareness post into a personal attack. Go post your opinions on epinions.com or something.

Pretty funny that you can see one guy that triple-dipped on this offer....Oops! Caught with his hand in the cookie jar!...or maybe he just hit the enter key one too many times.

whew. not on list either. also did a search like commOdogg said. nothing with my email. nothing with my nickname either other than a bunch sites for the animal Siberian Tiger including this description:

... The Siberian tiger eats meat. It preys on mountain sheep, elk, swine, deer, antelope,
buffalo, and when food is scarce, it will eat cattle and villagers. ...

so if i run out of food here, you guys better run! hmm, well, no cityfolks though, just villagers. haha.

link from way back

It does not ask for credit card info. Why would they ask for it unless thay plann on charging it. And what is wrong about having your name and address posted on a web site. There are things called white pages.

I think it is fine that this was posted . . . I think most of us here at anandtech are NOT going to use this info for mass communication. Besides, if you are "into" getting this sort of info, you probably know about it from other sources-ie-you aren't searching anandtech for distribution lists.

I think posting that is a great idea as i was one of those who signed up and am getting that free mag (luckily my name is not on that list though)I want stuff like this posted here rather than never knowing it, at least if it had cc#'s we could go call and change that cc# before they were used fraudulently and never knew about it because some anand user that knew of it was afraid to post it for fear of being bitched at!

thank you comm0dogg for alerting us to this matter!

whew.. I put my alias on it and it didn't show up on the list or on google. But.. how did this breach happen?

I am your next door neighbor. I do not look out of the ordinary. I drive a station wagon like yours, I mow my own lawn, and my kids attend the nearest public school. I am your next door neighbor, yessiree.

Umm, so what? I know it's a security breach and it should be watched but if they put up another mag I'm signing up. It's not like all the junk mail people don't already have my info anyway. heh and I'm actually on that page.
