Dead Parrot Sketch:

I bought some NMBs. They're very quiet, but they don't move enough air for your application, and there is still a hum.

I suggest getting the variable speed "Galaxy". I've got one on my GC68. Surprisingly smooth and balanced for the price. I run on the lowest setting (continuously variable), and get 37°C in normal operation of an 850 Tbird @ 1GHz. The rheostat leads are long enough to work with, but they're dainty, so I recommend wrapping with black electrical tape. I stuck the rheostat out the back of my case so it can be cranked up come summer time.

As a bonus, you can tell instantly if the fan is plugged in, by the two flashing blue LEDs!

I bought a five-pack of these fans, and consider them a "best buy".

Edit: A typical motherboard will stop seeing the rpm sensor at the lower speeds. I've seen this happen with other variable speed fans also.

NM this post. Reread prior message and got the answer I needed. That Galaxy fan sounds like a winner.

I've ordered a few times from SVC and had no problems. If its time sensitive item I use the 3 day shipping-its usually about $2 more.

I did not compare the temperature yet. But i feel the "new" GC68 are much the same as the old one (at least for about half a year),
I remember once I got a mirror finish, then they changes and I got some rough finish (but still cool in temperature). Now its back to mirror finish again.

The weight feel the same, fin number are same, height and position of fin are the same. Noise is any the same.

Only is the spring a bit weaker and yes, CPU can slide a bit.

I placed my first order with SVC early tuesday morning (Artic Silver III with free ship & some other small items - USPS shipping), also placed an order at the same time with NewEgg - Fedex and AllstarShop - UPS.

Received the SVC order today, 2 day delivery from CA to Michigan!
I'm impressed not only with SVC but the US postal service :Q

Heh, I just stopped by SVC (less than 5 minutes from my highschool)

It is in a little place, the guys there were very nice, and their products are nice.

Can someone tell me whether the picture of GC68 looks like the one on the website??

I purchase GC-68 for all my friends computer and I know they were the 'old' kind because the clips were very tough.

picture is about the same... the only different you will see is the fan label is blue/sliver in color instead of white/sliver.
You can hardly tell any different in the clip.... not until you put on the socket and feel it can slide with a little push/pull.

Placed my first order with SVC yesterday morning at 10am EST...by 3pm or so...they shipped..

That's freakin fast....

Crossing my fingers that they put all the items in the box now..

Told a buddy of mine what I got and what I paid for it...he didn't believe me..I had to show him the confirmation...

Great deals at that place!

I ordered last night and I just got E-mail saying it shipped. Now that's fast.

I thought it was going to be cheap, But I kept on adding stuff to the cart. I was like Oooh! cheeap Round cables add 6 to cart, then Ooh Boy, look at the price of those thumb screws, add several to cart, Man, those fan grills look cool, and 3 to the cart, then I was like "I need some round floppy cables also, add 3 to cart......Them Whammooo! I have $31 in crap in my cart, and now its heavy enough for shipping to be $9.

Damn. I should have had enough sense not to click on this thread; now my wallets lighter.

Please don't take my remarks about the SVC GC68 the wrong way.
While it is definately different than before, it is still the best $5 hsf you can get,
and will cool most any system except extreme overclockers just fine.
I would buy another from SVC without question.

I only brought up the difference for those extreme overclockers that notice such things,
and have used the old version in the past.

Running my XP1700+ (was 133x11 = 1463MHz stock) now at 205 (410DDR)x10 or 2050MHz,
and the old GC68 keeps it around 41c, while the new one runs around 46c.

so would you recommend buying the gc69 over the gc68? since these "new" gb68 are not as good as the previous models?

If you don't plan on OC'ing, get the GC68 (you still can, but it will give you less headroom).

If you wanna OC or you wanna run with a lower CFM/dBA fan, then get the GC69. $5 for cooler temps is worth it IMO.

Has anyone RMA'ed anything from SVC? How long does it take them to answer the email and what do I do after I get the RMA number?

well for incorrect shipments you email the same addy as rma. First time they took like 4 days, the rest were usually under 2 days.

I'm thinking of picking some stuff up from all the good things everybody has been saying about the place, but shipping really kills the deal for only a $20 order...it's amazing how much stuff you can get for $20 at that place. Anybody from Salt Lake want to split an order?

shipping killing an order??? try changing shipping options... they have a ton! try usps, fedex, ups. You should be able to find a cheaper alternative unless your buying their lead brick special They have some more stuff on sale that started today.

Ho well, ordered a couple times from SVC, but too bad I am in CA so I have to pay sale tax plus shipping. I wish I could pick up at their location as well (order only $17.00, total almost $23.00).

Man....maybe I am cheap....okay who am I kidding, I KNOW I'M cheap!

But $6 shipping on a $21 order to me is OUCH! This is Priority Mail, while First Class is $9, even more ouch, which makes less sense to me, isn't 1st class usually cheaper than Priority?

Guess the moral of this story is to buy more stuff to lessen the percentage of the total order that shipping will be.

Priority starts at like $3.80 and has automatic rates based on certain package sizes. They also have a minimum weight, so you don't see any benefit until you get into around the $8-$10 shipping range. Its still the best option for me being in DC, I get packages in 2 days max from them, same as FedEx saver from NE. The only difference is, they don't charge a flat fee per item like NE and some other places; Once you get to a certain box size and weight, each incremental item is like $.30.

To further comfirm their commitment to excellent quality service through recent changes, here's a blurb from their latest mailer:

Over the past year SVC has brought you a large number of products at prices which were previously unheard of. Round cables, CCFL kits, LED fans, UV fans and cables, and more. As a result of all these great deals, it was difficult at times for us to keep up with all of your orders and our service level was inconsistent (as seen in all the controversy surrounding SVC in the online forums). As a young company, SVC experienced many growing pains, but over the past few months we have been hard at work building new infrastructure, and increasing our processing overhead. Just a couple months away from our second anniversary, SVC has finally realized sufficient economy of scale to provide you with consistently excellent speed and service while continuing to lower our prices each day.

Our resellerratings are 9.33 for the month of February (6.92 for the past 6 months), and they will continue to rise. To speed the process, and to promote the rating of vendors in general, SVC will be giving out a FREE CLEAR ACRYLIC CASE on March 31 to a randomly selected customer who has left resellerratings for SVC. To qualify, you must (1) leave a resellerrating, and (2) email freecase@svc.com with your order number and your resellerrating user id. The winner will be announced at www.svc.com no later than March 31, 2003.

Can't deny that, as this thread is a clear indication of much improved service. I'm glad I held off on some of my resellerratings, I've got a bout 4 different ones to enter now!

Hey,

does anyone have any comments on the Arctic Super Silent Pro TC HSF? It looks nice the smaller size seems decent. I'm currently using an old volcano (6 or 7, I think) and my slow Athlon 750 runs at about 53-58C... Too hot for comfort. Does this one perform better than the GC68 (Thanks kenja)?

Woo...
