The big thing you folks have to understand is that i paid less than 7$ for shipping. WHAT DO YOU EXPECT??? They arent making money on the shipping, so they're probably going to be a little slow, or have a problem or 2 with it.
You folks expect perfect service from every comppany on the internet. One guy on RRatings was like "they delayed my WHOLE order for a week because of a Backordered product... why couldnt they ship the rest of my order then ship the BOrdered thing later?"
Let me explain how a business works: You try to make a profit on each transaction. In an internet economy, price is king. If you charge too much for just one item, people just wont order it. They'll go elsewhere. If you overcharge on shipping, ditto; people will take their business elsewhere. SVC charges a VERY small markup on each item. They probably order the stuff direct from the Mfr's. They get a fan for 1.50 each in quantities of 1000. They charge 7.00. You'd think that's a profit of 5.50 each. NO... including website fees, personel, insurance, rent, internet fees, electricity, etc (overhead) that profit is probably around .50$. They aren't making much money on shipping, so... add maybe $.50 onto profit, but that is taken up by shippin mistakes like those described above.
Now, We have a (i assume) relatively small business. i've never been there, or called anyone there. I bet that there are less than 15 workers at SVC. Probably 10 full time. Assume they get 250 orders a day on weekdays, 500 on weekends... Avg. order amount: $40.00= $10,000 a day on weekdays, $20,000 a day on weekends. Assuming they make $.50 an order, the owner makes $877/week([250*7days*.5/order]+[500/day*2days*.5/order]) This assumes that EVERYTHING goes to plan.
Now, with this sale, their profit margin goes to 0 on a lot of items. However, the increased volume does mean that their workers are going to be working the same number of hours, but filling 10x the orders... most likely, SVC as a company will be making about the same money, and working a lot harder.
SO... in conclusion, to ship your backordered item, (cost: ~$4.00) it would cancel the profit of 8... 8! orders... it just makes sense to put your order on hold. Sorry. Its the cost of low prices.
