I would just like to inform everyone that about 4 months ago I predicted that we would be seeing sub-$100 4x DVD burners within 6 months and it appears that this has come to fruition. Any9one who held off on buying that 2x burner for $250 back then can thank me now

Can anyone recommend what software/hardware would be best for transferring my videotapes to DVDs using this drive? I have an Aver video capture card, but that's it. No software, etc. Any help would be appreciated.

I also made the comment that the DVD with the + and - formats would be around $129 and I was going to wait. I immediately got a reply to the effect I was all wet and that would only be the wholesale price. I am glad I waited.

#1. Has anyone mention that these are "OEM" drives?? that means you "do not get any software, so if you don't already have software you will have to spend "more" money to buy some and NO! warranty, so if the drive stops working properly your're out of luck.
IMHO, you can get more bang for your bucks by going with the $133 (shipped) "retail" OPTORITE 4X DVD±R/±RW drive

pricewatch.com

#2. What's the big deal?? prices on these two 4X DVD±R/±RW drive have been dropping about $5 a week for several months, so next week they will be around $5 less and in 4 weeks they will be around $20 less.

Bought one with white box $124 including shipping. It has changed the OEM to include shipping $121.
THANK YOU!! Snatchface. Any suggestions for software? I am getting the accompanying software but it usually
is only the lite version.

Funny the 3 new DVD players I just got only play + media! I think that 100% is a farrrr overshot!

The two best vendors with high reseller ratings and lowest prices are BCD2000 and AccuPC. For $4 more from AccuPC you get 3-day delivery compared to BCD2000 5-day delivery.

yeah oem means just the drive usually. you dont really need much software for these. dvdshrink is free software, and if you already have a cd burner, then most cd burner software can recognize it (nero usually can any version over 5.5.8 should see this drive.

Alrighty, I bought one of these drives and installed it and using Nero 6.0 it only sees the drive as a DVD ROM. Anyone have any ideas on how to get it to be recognized as a DVD-+RW drive? Thanks.

LOL, I don't think it's a problem to backup your own DVD's, as I do this w/ my Disney films. After my nieces & nephews scratched a few of mine, I had to get a dvd burner cuz those damn DVD's are expensive. Now, I only let them view my backups & my DVD collection is saved. It's definitely paid for itself and well worth it for anyone w/ kids or small nieces & nephews.

The fact that he put backing up in quotes indicates that he is referring to illegal activity. Using the term "backing up" online is the way most people skirt around forum rules prohibiting discussion of violating copyright laws.

sparkyclarky and righthere...are you guys psychic? Are you litterate? I said backin up...that is perfectly legal. I guess I missed that part of school where I was thought that "" meant breaking the law. I put "backing up" in quotes becuase it isn't exactly that. I have purchased a liscnese for whatever movie it is, and I can do a little more with it than back it up, so i put it in quotes. Well I "backed up" my copy of black hawk down, which i payed for about a year ago with the money i had earned from my legit summer job. I am waiting on those mpaa reps...if they are as stupid as you they won't be able to figure out how to get here.

anyway...

Got the drive today, and had bought the 50 memorex dvd+r's from OD for about $45. I haven't tried dvd x copy, or dvd x copy xpress. I used dvd decrypter->dvd2one->imgtool->dvd decrypter. I got some wierd error before i burnt the iso onto the dvd with dvd decrypter, but burnt it anyway. At 45% I got an error and I could either abort/retry/ignore, and retry and ignore did nothing. I aborted and just out of curriosity wanted to see if I could get anything off of the dvd. I figured I might be able to get something like 45% of the movie, or reduced quality, or no picture/audio. To my surprise I got the whole movie in perfect quality. I didn't have any menus or special features, but I wasn't suppose to. Basically that error cut my write time in half and gave me what i wanted. My write time was something like 17min. @ 4.2x for the movie black hawk down. I was suppose to take 30min. which seemed long, but the 17min. it took seemed right on the money. Maybe the size of the file was being read improperly so that it burnt the whoe thing then stopped?

Anyway, I know that the drive/media are both compatible with all 6 different dvd players I have in my house.

Does anybody know if dvd x copy or xcopy xpress is any better than my method? The way I did it took quite a while and was a bit of a pain. It made me realy happy though because my blac hawk down had the pattern from a papertowel impressed on it from when my sister put it onto a papertowel and stuck a book ontop of it, and it was skipping and breaking up constantly, and now it is perfect.

Yes, we are literate. The quotes say it all. You are a stealing scumbag, and now you're making up some lame story to try to justify your actions.

DVD decryption programs like DeCSS have already been found in violation of copyright law. It is only a matter of time before other copying programs are taken off the shelf (until they add somy copying restrictions).

Please point me to the license you have for any movies you've purchased on DVD.

have you guys tried dvd shrink?

its free

and i'd have to say its better than dvd x copy, which also is not free.

i just got my nd-1300 A in black (to replace my white ND-1100a) and i'd have to say both are excellent drives. my only main gripe is that they are slow at normal CD burning compared to state of the art cd-r drives.

Please point me to the place where someone gives a crap. There is law, there is ethics, and then there is the DMCA, which 99.9% of non-multi millionaires who own record labels or movie studios agree does not codifiy US ethics and exists only to squeeze pennies out of average people to make the rich richer. I, like most people here, will spend my life defying assonine, punative laws purchased by special interest groups that forbid crazy $hit like backing up your own, legally purchased media.

I give a crap. This piracy crap is PREVENTING technology from being released. All of the DTCP stuff has made purchasing an HDTV a very complicated adventure. This year you need to look for DVI connectors. Last year you needed 1394. Who knows what you'll need next year. Your statistics on the DMCA are way off. This is something *for* copyright owners only, which really means that it is intended for those multi-millionaire types.

Think of it this way: what happens if you try to "back up" a $20 bill and then use your backup copy? It's the same thing as "backing up" DVD's. You don't have the rights to do this. And even if you did have the rights to make a pure digital copy, you don't have the rights to use the dvd decryption software. If you don't like the law, work to change it...don't just steal.
