I'm not using Nero yet, but my device manager (Win 2k) says Region 2, with 4 more changes available. Hasn't stopped me from playing R1 discs, however...

I haven't tried burning any DVDs yet (waiting for media) so I don't yet know how that will be affected by the region coding. I'm guessing not at all.

Yes....The theory behind HD burning is that the pits in a CDr can be shorter because the laser that a DVD player uses has a shorter bandwidth. So if the width of the pits is cut in half then twice the data can be stored on to a CDr. But a normal CD-Rom drive is unable to read a HDBurn CDr b/c the laser has a bandwidth which is much too wide to read the shorter pits.

Read here.

For those still unsure about media, it may make sense to pick out a demo pack of various brands of media. I got the 4x DVD-R pack from from blank-cd-cdr.com for $17.99 + shipping. It's a bit pricy per disk, but I expect it to help me avoid getting burned when I go for a bulk buy.

Just FYI...

I take it you found some kind of online coupon to get it down to that price...I wonder where someone might find one of those???

The 2.16 firmware has support for the Princo 4x -R's , I tested one from a batch that got that would only burn at 2x prior to 2.16. Also the BMI 4x from Tiger-Direct are burning at 4x.

I finally went for it, the price dropped below my threshold of $150, and I got it for $149.90 at pcsupplysource.com. Can't wait to get this drive in my machine and start burning! Is it recommended to use a different CD-burner for day to day burning of CDs? Or can I take out my CD-burner and put it in another machine?

Thanks!

let us know how it goes. pcsupplysource seems to have a really high reselleratings.

Received the drive a few days ago, flashed the firmware and burned my first DVD! Everything worked flawlessly, used DVDShrink to backup one of my DVDs and it plays perfect in my DVD player and my parent's. Going to try HD-burn tonight after work.

I'd highly recommend pcsupplysource, they were great. I accidentally switched two numbers in my address, they called and said the shipping address doesn't match the billing address, so I sent them an email (around 8pm) saying I messed up, and they shipped it out the next morning via FedEx!

Is this still a good deal or is the Sony drive (on top of the first page locked) better?

Why does it say you have to reboot to have the product work correctly? I never did it and it works fine.

On Optorite's site there is a page for recommended media. They list 6 +R discs and only 3 -R discs. I'm wondering if this means the drive is less compatible with -R media or that they didn't test as many of that type for some reason.

I burned my first DVD-R (Ritek G04) and it won't play in my standalone player, which is rated at dvdrhelp as being highly compatible with most media.

One of the Optorite Threads else where has been keeping a list of what Media works with the DD0203 at what speed etc : here you go..

[*]TDK DVD+R 4x
[*]Ritek/Ridata DVD-R 4x
[*]Princo DVD-R 4x (so far the newest firmware 2.11 can only recognize it as 2.4x
[*]Maxell DVD-R 2x
[*]CompUSA DVD-R ?x
[*]Sony DVD+RW ?x
[*]Fuji DVD+R 2x
[*]Fuji DVD+RW 2.4x
[*]Dvdpro DVD-R ?x
[*]Kyhpermedia DVD-R 4x
[*]Verbatim DVD+R 4x
[*]HP DVD+R ?x
[*]Memorex DVD-R, DVD-RW ?x

If only considering DVD-R because it's low price and good compatibility,
I would say, the best choice overallis
If you want excellent quality, go for ritek (@meritline)
If you want best quality/price, go for princo (@rima)

For the hd-burn, it seems most well-known brand CD-R will do successfully, say, Fuji, Memorex

The most popular websites for DVD-R are:

www.rima.com
www.meritline.com
www.blank-cd-cdr.com
www.shop4tech.com
www.yesbuy.net

Thanks Ziptar. So it looks like Ritek DVD-R work well with this burner. Those discs are also supposed to work well in my DVD player. I burned the same image to DVD+RW and it works fine. So I can't figure out what the problem is.

Can anyone who got one of these before vouch for it? Follow-up posts from those who ordered?

Buy it, the drives work great and have no problems in my experience. You won't be disappointed.
