I'm not using Nero yet, but my device manager (Win 2k) says Region 2, with 4 more changes available. Hasn't stopped me from playing R1 discs, however...Originally posted by: csaddict
Anyone else notice their drive is region free after the update to 2.16? Mine says all in the nero infotool.

I just bought the black one for $148 with free priority mail shipping from livewarehouse . there's coupon floating around to bring the price down to $148 for both black and beige, however, I don't think I'm allowed to post the coupon here, right?
there's also coupon to bring the price of Pioneer A06 4x DVD±RW to $179 for those who are concern about the brand.
Yes....The theory behind HD burning is that the pits in a CDr can be shorter because the laser that a DVD player uses has a shorter bandwidth. So if the width of the pits is cut in half then twice the data can be stored on to a CDr. But a normal CD-Rom drive is unable to read a HDBurn CDr b/c the laser has a bandwidth which is much too wide to read the shorter pits.Originally posted by: MisterJackson
So let me get this straight.....if you burn a "HD" disc, of let's say data. then it will only read in this drive and not a normal PC CD-ROM???
I take it you found some kind of online coupon to get it down to that price...I wonder where someone might find one of those???I finally bought one.. I got the Black Optorite from Livewarehouse for $149.00

For those still unsure about media, it may make sense to pick out a demo pack of various brands of media. I got the 4x DVD-R pack from from blank-cd-cdr.com for $17.99 + shipping. It's a bit pricy per disk, but I expect it to help me avoid getting burned when I go for a bulk buy.
Just FYI...

I finally went for it, the price dropped below my threshold of $150, and I got it for $149.90 at pcsupplysource.com. Can't wait to get this drive in my machine and start burning! Is it recommended to use a different CD-burner for day to day burning of CDs? Or can I take out my CD-burner and put it in another machine?
Thanks!
let us know how it goes. pcsupplysource seems to have a really high reselleratings.

On Optorite's site there is a page for recommended media. They list 6 +R discs and only 3 -R discs. I'm wondering if this means the drive is less compatible with -R media or that they didn't test as many of that type for some reason.
I burned my first DVD-R (Ritek G04) and it won't play in my standalone player, which is rated at dvdrhelp as being highly compatible with most media.

Can anyone who got one of these before vouch for it? Follow-up posts from those who ordered?
