I've had mine for a month so far and have burned about 15 dvd-r's fine so far. Haven't used the hd-burn feature yet as I need to find compatible media. I got mine from PCSupplysource (NJ). Punch in "dd0203" on pricewatch and you can find a code to get it for $129 shipped.

Can anyone who got one of these before vouch for it? Follow-up posts from those who ordered?

I ordered. Just a few things.

1. Firmware 2.17 is not made for this drive. You can flash to it, but it's recommended to just stick with 2.16 for the time being.
2. ALOT of people have reported that DVD-R media burned with this drive will not read in your DVD-ROM drive. I confirmed it in my Pioneer 105s. I even had my friend test one in his Lite On DVD-ROM drive and same story. Hopefully, this will be fixed in the next firmware update. DVD+RW media burned with this drive works perfectly in my Pioneer DVD-ROM drive though.

I'm having a problem with Nero 6. Nero sees the drive and media ok, but when I hit burn, my whole computer locks up. Same thing happens when I try to do the drive speed tests.

Sonic MyDVD controls the drive just fine, although I did get an error stating that my buffer was too small and I should try upgrading the firmware?!? I am running 2.16. I hit ok, and then the disc does proceed to burn just fine.

Funny, DVDecryptor also causes my computer to crash - even on ripping. But SmartRipper works just fine. Considering RMAing it back to Newegg...

I've found that DVD-R burned with the Optorite won't work in my Sony player but DVD+R will. You say a lot of people also have DVD-R problems with this burner. But a lot of people don't seem to have those problems. I can take my DVD-R and they work in most other players, including different Sony models. It doesn't make sense.

No, I'm saying a lot people are having DVD-R problems on their DVD-ROM drives, not DVD players. Read through my post again.

OK. Some people are also having problems with their DVD players and it also points to the burner being at fault.

wpenhall - I can burn everything with Nero 6 and dvd decrypter. no crashes and no problems.

as for dvd-r, its a no-go in my apex 5131 (even though its reported that dvd-r works in this apex). dvd-rw and dvd+r work fine in the apex. I've tried fujifilm and verbatim dvd-r but they don't want to work in the apex. guess i'll hold out for a firmware update to fix the dvd-r problemo.

Anyone care to post a DVDumbo guide for burning a movie? I have the optorite working (f/w=2.07), used Dvdecrypter to create the _ts folder on HDD, have Nero 5.5.10.50 to burn DVD. I am lost on What;s next to get a movie burned on a DVD-r, so I can play it in my Home DVD player?

Glad it works for ya. I can't figure out what the incompatibility might be. Nero sees the drive just fine, lets me create my folders ok, but then everything completely hangs when I hit burn.

I'm not even really sure where to start diagnosing the problem...

Ok - I'm at wits end :disgust: The following software causes my Opto (fw 2.16) to hang completely:

Nero 6 (demo)
DVD Shrink
DVD Decryptor
Burnatonce

I was able to use Sonic MyDVD to create a disc, but that's about it. Whenever I try to burn using the other programs, the program hangs, and I can no longer access my drive either through windows explorer or whatever else. I also can't physically eject the disc from the drive after it's hung up.

I can watch DVDs fine with WinDVD and I can access data just fine on data CDs and DVDs.

Is there some software setting I'm missing that may be causing these problems? I'm pretty sure I have the jumper set correctly.

I'm past the return time for Newegg, but within optorite's warrenty. Anyone have any advice on how I can get my money back? If someone thinks they will have better luck than me, I'm willing to sell it for very reasonable terms. I'd be happy to entertain any offers.

Well, I put a second copy of Win2k on another partition, and discovered why my drive wouldn't work. I reinstalled my drivers one at a time, doing a test burn between each install. I found that the drive started hanging after I installed my second VIA Bus Master Ultra DMA driver. For some reason, windows wants to install it twice (one for each IDE channel?). The drive worked after the first install, but not after the second. So I uninstalled the second and everything works fine. Not sure what I gave up. Device manager shows my primary IDE channel in DMA mode, and my secondary IDE channel in ultra DMA mode.

Anyway, what is the final story with the firmware region coding? I flashed my drive to 2.16, but WinDVD won't play a disc until I make the hardware change from R2 to R1. Is there a (free) way around this, or do I just have to bite the bullet and use up one of my changes?

Thanks!
