This info comes to me from my local Blockbuster, and there was no word on whether or not it was a corporate decision or just a regional/local one. In case it's a corporate decision though...

Starting today (1/30/04) Blockbuster video will be getting rid of the standard 2 day, 1 week, 9 day rental system and go to a strict rate-per-day system. For two-day rentals -- new releases -- the per-day rate will be half of the current fee for renting the video for 2 days. (So renting it for 2 days will cost the same) However the rest of the info was incredibly vague. There could be rate increases for other videos, or they could go down. There was mention that renting video games for a week should cost the same as it does now, but that wasn't explained in detail or really confirmed. I have no idea as to the rest of the fee structure.

Bottom line is that things are going to be strange at Blockbuster for a while. Keep an eye out for hidden late fees and make sure you understand the system fully before you rent anything from them.

* * * UPDATE * * *
So far this has been confirmed here (Northern Nevada, Reno area) and in Wisconsin. Other people have confirmed this as well, though they neglected to mention where they are.

Additionally, it appears as though Blockbuster now requires a credit card to rent from them. You can no longer pay in cash or by debit card, apparantly. No word on whether or not this applies to check cards, since they can be charged like credit cards. (I'll have word soon though; my account was registered with a check card)

Finally, ChefJoe was kind enough to scan and host images of their new rental policy fliers. I have also put the images in my yahoo briefcase, in case the AT effect breaks Joe's bandwidth limit. Links are below.

Blockbuster new policy flier, page 1 (Alternate link)
Blockbuster new policy flier, page 2 (Alternate link)

* * * UPDATE x2 * * *
Some more details about Blockbuster's new policy, at least in the Reno area.

In order to sign up for a new account with Blockbuster you are now limited to either two utility bills or an actual credit card. Check cards or any other debit cards that can be charged like credit cards cannot be used. If you signed up for an account previously with a Check Card or something similar your account will still be valid. Once you are signed up you can pay by any means you wish: check, cash, credit card, debit, whatever. You just need either a Credit Card or two utility bills to get the account in the first place. (As a side effect this effectively keeps kids from registering their own account using their Visa Buxx card or something similar)

As far as specific rates go Reno seems to match up with what most people have been posting. Games go for either $1 a day, or you can pay $6 to rent for 7 days. (The old rate was $5.99 for 5 days). New movies are $3-something for 2 days, then $2 a day afterwards.

All in all it doesn't look too bad, though as has been mentioned Blockbuster tends to be incredibly uptight about late fees.

I've been avoiding Blockbuster lately. I had a one day late fee, which I never paid and they charged a credit card which I used to rent it about $5. While $5 is pretty meaningless and not worth my time going to argue with the manager, I'm still upset over the fact they charged my CC without my authorization. I been buying most of the new releases on dvd's and the ones I didn't buy, I can always get ppv on DirecTv. For all I care Blockbuster can go down, it's one company that's not going to survive all the new technology, and in my opinion will be going out in the upcoming years.

Your authorization was probably given in the membership contract you signed.

I hardly ever rent from Blockbuster. In fact the last time I rented from them was when I had a fist full of coupons.
Their prices are way too high for me. Unless the price for new releases goes under $2 per day, I ain't gonna set foot in the place.

I remember people talking about getting charged late fees even though they turned in their movies on time at blockbuster. Now that is pretty shady.
Hopefully Netflix and other online retailers will get more locations around the country so they can give BB and Hollywood video a clue that they better shape up.

Only problem with PPV is the moives are not widescreen.

New releases around here are $3.75 for two days. Made me wonder how they're going to split the cost in half.

I hate Blockbuster. One time the power was out so they closed early. I dropped off my videos at the box. Next time I go there ,there are late charges... no excuses, had to pay them. Other time I was late ,like 15 minutes, and they wouldn't let it go and charged me for another day. I used to rent 5-10 movies a month, now I don't go there anymore.

I hope they finally do drop their prices... $4 for a new release is about as crazy as $9 to see it in the theater. I don't remember the last time I went to a movie that wasn't a matinee.

Thank god for the internet!!!!

They really need to change their due date time. If I rent at 6pm it's due the following day before noon. That really sux. I have to go by Blockbuster before work -- and Blockbuster is 6 miles out of the way.....

There is a local store nearby that now rents DVD's for $.89 and you get them til the end of business the following day -- thus due at 10pm next day. Very nice and very cheap!

I use my Discover Rewards to get a couple 10-movie rental cards (for $20 each). That makes the movies work out to $2 each (and I usually get 2 at a time), which is acceptable to me.

DirecTV's are (some are) they are designated with LBX.

And I too have stopped going to Blockbuster, Netflix all the way now.

I just buy the frickin movies. I always forget or don't have time to return them and get a $12-$15 late fee. Makes a nice DVD collection too Great for movie nights with the friends...we just pick a movie from the library and off we go.

Blockbuster is 2 blocks away from me and I still forget to return the movies on time. Mind you that isn't very often due to p2p and cheap dvds that can be bought but it really sucks when your late fee is the same as the price you paid to rent it in the first place!

Netflix wouldn't work for me because while I watch a ton of movies and virtually no tv shows, I still not going to spend a flat $20 a month on dvd rentals.

after the incident with the LOTR:TTT "giftcard" that many of us experienced, I've never been back to Blockbuster to make a rental. I hate them, so much that I've switched to netflix and actually buy my dvds now. F@ck blockbuster, I hope they burn...

within the last ten years I recall several class action lawsuits that blockbuster lost due to poor business practices :|

Blockbuster = Cokbuster.

They suck. How can they survive charging $4.50 in my area for a rental? That's plain stupid. Who are these stupid people that continue to keep this place making money???? I agree w/ most of you that Netflix is a much better deal. However, I didn't like the price, waiting on a list, and waiting to get my movie, sending it back etc. I've been getting by without either by renting at the supermarket. Hannaford in my area rents new release DVDs for $1.50. Granted they don't have a ton but I'm able to get a new release within a week. Cokbuster doesn't even always have movies. They eat it. Hope they burn too.
