Hey Berryracer,

Thanks again for making this list and updating it all the time. It seems ms has just released a crap ton of updates, and this is the thread I keep coming back to when I want to check if it's a telemetry/analytics/bull crap update. Any tips on how I can check them myself when the knowledge base articles have literally 0 details about the update?

now that you have the base updates installed, and the bad ones hidden, it shouldn't be too hard. When a few updates appear, just make sure to check again against this list, I would save the list in a text file locally on my computer. Some updates keep reappearing every now and then so you can't be too sure. Also, when new updates show up that aren't in this list, just Google them, a lot of hits on the forums should tell you more details about what they do. That's how I compiled this list, by doing research for each new update.

On a side note, for the non-tech savvy that don't know what updates to hide, they are doomed:

Microsoft no longer lets you opt-out of a Windows 10 upgrade

Note: Unless offcourse you take all the pre-cautions to not install the updates mentioned in this thread ( Updates to hide to prevent Windows 10 Upgrade / Disable Telemetry ).

But for the average joe out there, Windows 10 is a mandatory upgrade! First they tried the free way, it didn't work, now they wanna force it it down everyone's throat.

I have a feeling my mom who lives in England will call me soon and be like why is her computer not working properly

I'd be willing to bet a fair amount that Win7/8x users aren't suddenly and unexpectedly about to get upgraded to Win10.

Despite disabling GWX I'm getting the 'upgrade to win10' bit in Control Panel > Windows Updates. If I want to install/control specific updates then I can click on 'show all available updates' and hide the Win10 one. Admittedly that's a temporary fix as it will reappear in a day or so, but it still allows me to control WU in the ways I've been used to.

At some point, if GWX is all you are concerned with regarding Microsoft's recent updates, whether or not you upgrade to 10 will be a moot point. GWX doesn't even exist on my system. The telemetry updates are turning 7/8/8.1 into Windows 10 so far as the spyware is concerned. The most recent batch of updates reset my Windows Update settings to default and fully re-opened the door for whatever garbage Microsoft intended to send my way.

I reset the update settings to my preference and hopefully they will remain set (if they now actually do anything??). We shall see.

I'm sure a few of the zealots here will say that what Microsoft did to my update settings was perfectly fine.

Was just reading an article on this. Went into Windows Update to see what it had available and sure enough "Upgrade to Windows 10" was checked by default under Optional Updates. That's despite me removing GWX and all the associated telemetry KBs.

Ugh, better hop on my mom's computer and fix that before all hell breaks loose.

Microsoft is claiming that it was a "mistake". Yeah, mistake my eye. My iOS and Linux devices at least ask first before downloading, and my Mac requires you to seek new OS versions out yourself.

This morning the Win10 update in WU is gone from my system. There wasn't an attempt to install it overnight either.

Also, I'm just wondering when the last time an optional update went on a Windows system without the user's choice.

Microsoft claims it was a mistake so I think they fixed it

Thanks berryracer for providing this not install list, and I'd like to add:

I just bought a used laptop with windows 7. It was a clean install with updates disabled.

I left it disabled, and downloaded updates from Autopatcher. What was nice about autopatcher is it only enabled the critical updates. All the KB's on berryracer's list were not listed. Another big plus for using autopatcher.

Yesterday, my system was blocked from any updates because of theWin10 hog. What worked was the Registry hack in Victorian Gary;s note followed by a reboot. The Win10 upgrade was blocking all other updates. That fixed it. GWX etc is gone. Updates are unblocked. The Registry line to not ugrade the OS works!

I already have Win10 all customized and operational, but on a different drive. I do not intend to forego 7 or 8.1. Each is on a separate drive. Microsoft, go pound sand!

Anyone know if it's ok to delete the 6gb of stuff in folder "$Windows.~WS" ?

Tom, that's another folder needed to roll back your old OS. Try disk cleanup, system files to see if that will remove it. If not, and if you don't want to roll back, delete it.

This is on my oldish Dell laptop that still is running Windows 7. It's never had 10 installed unless some part of a Windows 10 install ran on it's own.

edit--

I came across this post in the link you provided.

"One thing I have not seen heavily advertised (it does seem important though) about the 30-day rollback option you have with Windows 10 is that *if* you run the Media Creation Tool at any point in those 30 days, it BREAKS the ability to rollback; even if you did it just to create an ISO image so you would have installation media to keep.

This is because that tool recreates the "$Windows.~BT" and "$Windows.~WS" folders on the root of your C drive and those two folders and their original contents after the upgrade along with the "Windows.OLD" folder (the only 'visible by default' one of the three, I believe) are all necessary for the rollback process to work."

I think I did run the Media Creation Tool to create an ISO of Windows 10, so I guess maybe that's what created the folders on my Windows 7 laptop.

My update offering from MS today was one "optional" update that applied to Win8/8.1 and Server 2012. Since I'm running 7 Pro, it was a fairly easy choice to hide that one.

Some are calling it a "mystery meat" update. http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-...-another-mystery-meat-update.html#post3164517

Microsoft - you have lost your collective mind.

I got that one, too... and wondered why I even received it (running W7.) Hate to say it, but it seems like every day MS is giving me a reason to suspect everything they do.

but that update doesn't state anything about Telemetry or Windows 10 upgrade preparation?

Have to ask why anyone would believe anything it says in the description?? My system is running fine without it.

New update added to the OP and batch file removal for the updates has been updated.

KB3081954 - This update adds telemetry data points to Work Folders for Asimov telemetry pipeline in Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1). This update also supports users to continue using Work Folders after they upgrade from Windows 7 SP1 to Windows 10.
