update:http://www.overclock3d.net/articles/gpu_displays/amd_polaris_10_engineering_sample_pictured/1

AMD's Polaris 10 engineering sample has been pictured and shown running Hitman at Ultra Settings at a constant 60+ FPS at 1440p, which is an impressive feat given that in our testing the the R9 Fury X was not even able to average 60FPS at these settings.

AMD Polaris 10

We were told that Polaris 10 is capable of running AAA title at 60+ FPS while being installed in small form factor chassis. According to VRWorld, the PCB of Polaris 10 engineering sample was not much bigger than R9 Nano’s. It means that AMD is pushing forward the new standard of small cards with high-end specifications. However it remains unclear if Polaris 10 will replace Hawaii or Fiji in terms of performance, so it’s really hard to predict if future graphics cards from AMD will all use smaller boards.
The sample used during Capsaicin had five display outputs, including: three DisplayPorts 1.3, HDMI 2.0 and DVI-D Dual Link. DisplayPort 1.3 supports 5K content at 60 Hz or 4K/60Hz with HDR. The DVI port was not offered with Fiji-based products, so it’s interesting to see it installed again.

AMD Polaris 11

I did get to see AMD's Polaris 11 GPU running PASSIVELY while playing back 4K VR content last night. Pretty impressive. #AMDCapsaicin

LOL

No CF connector, as expected from post Hawaii releases... and that's as much as we're gonna get from that picture.

Polaris 10 is the big chip vs 11, right?

polaris 10 around the size of a nano? Before I would have thought that suggested HBM but interesting if they are going for small form factor on their reference cards even with GDDR5 taking up PCB space.

Well we did have Samsung launching their 20nm GDDR5 last year, the GDDR5x should also be on 20nm, so all the heat & (supposed) extra die space isn't as much of an issue now as it was thought to be.

How on Earth no one thought to shove their phone camera lens into the gap between the case and GPU bracket I have no idea.

Pretty sweet. So it will be sized for Mini ITX? I might have to get one of these for my smaller rig depending on the price.

Huge reveal.

Looks like a pretty tall PCB for a reference design. Same height as my 290.

surprised to see the DVI come back. Figured they killed it off for good with Fiji

Let off the big part of that demo

1440p @ locked 60 fps @ Ultra settings.

Thats better than 980 TI / Fury X performance.

I'm assuming when they say passive, it's a Strix-style design that's passively cooled when not being pushed hard, not that it's actually passively cooled WHILE doing 4K Ultra... right? Amazing if true.

Yeah, but it's DVI-D, so there's still no analog display love. For the few people still running with those, that is...

Playback, not rendering, but yeah they mean passive as in fan turned off.

Yeah, I really would like to see that independently verified. There's a pretty wide range of numbers out there for Hitman in 1440p Ultra. Computerbase shows the 390X hitting 59.1FPS, while PCGH shows a 390X hitting 55.6 (51.0min). GameGPU had stupidly low numbers from their article a couple days ago though.

The big thing with the Hitman numbers is that the Fury X and 980Ti in Computerbase's and PCGH's tests show almost no scaling over a 390X. I would be hesitant to ascribe 980Ti/Fiji levels of performance to P10 right now until multiple cards are benched on the same system with the same game build and drivers, and in a game that better shows a spread of performance.

It was just said it ran 1440p, 60FPS, smooth as butter. Nobody said it was 60FPS minimum. But it was capped to 60FPS max.

It does not matter. Unless we compare Polaris 10 and Fury X with identical configs and perform the same fraps run through we will never know which one is faster. Anyway its another 3-4 months before we find out how good Polaris 10 is. So till then we can reserve judgement.

On second thought this made me kinda sad.

One thing I prefered about the 7970 I had to the 970 was how big it was. It looks awesome having a big card in a big case.

But now I have a 7850 in there as a stopgap and it just looks so small with so much wasted case space. If all the GPUs I can afford get small that is great for my Mini ATX rig, but my main rig's epeen will never be the same.

Maybe I will just buy a three fan 390x or Fury when the new cards force them to go on clearance.

I dunno, I think I would rather just jump to conclusions and stir up the fanboys.

Their whole review was off, all of the DX12 runs were slower so they had some kind of configuration issue. Usually they are good, but when they are all negative scaling something is off.

Perhaps there is a market for an e-peen enhancing strap-on shroud for undersized video cards :hmm:

Just get an aftermarket one with a 3 fan cooler. The added benefit with the small PCB is that the blow through cooler is wildly more efficient than a board length one.
