upgrade 1080p 144 hz to 1440p ?

Hello,

I have a 24 inch 1080p 144 hz monitor and i would like to know if is worth to buy a 1440p monitor. There is a big difference ?

For me, the change from my old Samsung 24" 1920*1200 TN monitor to my current 27" 2560*1440 Dell U2711 IPS panel was night and day. Even at 3" larger screen size, the increase in sharpness is as clear as day, and the immensely larger desktop work area is a huge boon. I'd never go back to 1080p, even at 144Hz. Although if you're used to high refresh rates, get a high refresh rate monitor and make sure your GPU matches it. What GPU do you have?

I went from a 144hz 1080 TN ASUS MG248Q to a 144hz 1440 IPS ASUS MG279Q and it was amazing. Colors were nicer, everything was sharper and to have 144hz still was great. But I couldn't leave my dual 1080 setup, that and everyone was lowballing my MG248Q

If anything it's the IPS 144hz that I miss the most. 1440 for web browsing is just waste IMO. Doing even side by side windows for web browsing makes the text too small and enlarging/zooming in makes it work just like a 1080.

For me, I just wish there were 24" 144hz 1080 IPS monitors but there are none so holding out for 2160 144hz IPS probably of +32" size in the future, not sure when though.

Today i went in my computeur dealer and i tried a game on a 4k monitor and it look amasing. But it 's only 60hz. I have couldn't try a 1440 so i don't know if it 's waste of money.

Even with a 1080TI I wouldn't imagine your getting much over 60fps @4k in modern games anyway? Might be worth checking out a few benchmarks of the games you play and consider if you will want to spend money on a new GPU each generation.

I have a 1440p screen at the moment and I think the resolution is the best compromise between performance and GPU requirements. I got a qx2710 for a few hundred AUD a couple of years ago and overclocked it to 110hz. Still really happy with it, although I wouldn't mind finding an equivalent one with Freesync.

Not sure what the best value fast refresh rate 1440p monitor is at the moment, but it might be worth checking to see if any of the Korean budget models are a good deal.

AFAIK, there is only one 4k 75-144hz monitor out right now...or maybe it isn't yet released? But I wouldn't worry about it. your 1080ti is only good for 60hz at 4K anyway, at ~ultra settings in the most demanding games. (that is nothing to sneeze at)

Also consider that a GPU that can push 4K at 100hz and beyond probably isn't on the radar for the next 2 or more years....I mean, unless you can justify spending $3-4k on multiple GPUs and going SLI/XFR in the handful of games that it actually works...

Your GPU is powerful enough that you can reasonably keep the high framerates you are currently used to while getting more detail from the higher resolution.

Even if high refresh rate 4K were out yet (check again in Q3 maybe) if you want to maintain high framerate gaming you'd have to reduce settings. Then you have to play the game of framerate vs graphical fidelity vs resolution. 1440p 144hz makes it much easier to balance especially on your enthusiast class GPU.

Why does the framerate have to be near 144 fps in order to utilize the higher refresh rate? What if the fps is like 60 but you have a 144hz monitor; is there a benefit still in that there is still no tearing etc?

Yes. I usually still tailor my games around 60fps minimum, with a few exceptions like Overwatch. With Freesync / Gsync this is good because drops below 60 are fine, unlike regular 60hz V Sync, and less input lag.

As for 60hz no v sync vs 144hz no v sync (and no Free/G), it's still better for 60fps gameplay. The display itself refreshes so quickly that tears are less noticeable.

And if you got a 144hz panel without Free/G Sync (why you would do this, I do not know), and still preferred 60hz V sync over 144hz uncapped when averaging around 60fps, then you can always change the panel to 60hz in Windows for gaming. Sort of a waste of the panel, but what I'm saying is that in no way can a 144hz monitor be worse than a 60hz one (all other things equal).

Ultrawide is fantastic for productivity work and gaming and I'd love to have a higher vertical height screen. I moved to it from 1920x1200 on a 27" screen will never again buy a square monitor. Since moving to my 3440x1440 monitor I can place 3 different documents side by side to work on. I can have a source and a target spreadsheet up at the same time plus other documents without having to swap them out on the screen to see them. Gaming is also very nice as I can now see more activity around me than before.

Make sure you get a VA monitor. The days are over for IPS and TN. We have high refresh rate gaming oriented VA monitors now so no point buying IPS.

I bought my HP Envy 34c because it was VA and the price was right so I couldn't pass it up.
