Upgrade 780 to 980?

I have a GeForce GTX 780 that I got for a steal awhile ago and now with these newer games coming out it's weaknesses are showing. So I was wondering if this particular GeForce GTX 980 would be worth it. It being a blower is not a down side for me. I just don't know if it's a good buy even at $420 with all the D3D12 A-sync non-sense going around and potential pascal launch around the corner.

I usually upgrade my graphics card frequently and don't spend more then $250 but this card seems like a good deal and might be worth it to hold me off until GP100/GP110 rolls out for consumers. Not sure what to do!

It would be nice to max out Mirror's Edge Catalyst!

If your PSU can handle it, you can buy another used 780 for about $200.00, then sell them when Pascal comes out.

780 SLI will be quite a bit faster than a 980, as long as you aren't hitting VRAM caps.

Nvidia may reveal when Pascal is launching on April 5. Not saying it's coming in May or June, but say you buy this and 2-3 months later the GTX 1070 is released and is noticeably faster at equal or lower price. That's certainly not a bad price on a 980 though. And if Pascal is further away than spring then it could be worth it.

At this point wait... What resolution are you gaming at? Even at 1440p, I still find the 780 to be alright, of course you'll need to clock her up a bit. You should be able to get her to at least 1150MHz.

overclock the 780, and hit the buy button on a 1070gtx or Polaris 10 in a few months.

I just upgraded from an oc 780 to a 980ti (not oc yet). I can tell you this, I was underwhelmed. The only reason I got the 980ti was I had an expiring gift certificate for $400 off so I picked up card. I'll put a new cooler on it and overclock it but it isn't worth it for me IMHO. You still can't play crisis 3 with all the bells and whistles cranked - it drops to 35 FPS even at 2560x1600. I'd definitely wait for the new NVidia ti card if you want one for serious gaming. Just my opinion but I'd rather pay $1000 provided the next ti card is 50% faster than the 980ti than $600 for a 980ti. That plus the next ti card will probably have 1.3 display port - better for 4K for when you get a higher res monitor. Lastly we may see some video games that will use 8GB of VRAM if you are running 4K very shortly.

I play a lot of old games like MOH Airpborne, Crysis 1-3, FEAR, BIoshock 1-2, Bulletstorm as well as COD AW, COD BO3, Wolfenstein (all)

Pretty much any FPS and ideally games that let you do LAN CO-OP - e.g. Serious Sam (FE HD, 2nd, 2), NOLF2, FEar Co-op mod, Left4 dead 2, Doom3 Coop, Painkiller.

If there are some good FPS games with amazing graphics that grab my attention, next year I'll buy a 4K monitor with DP 1.3 and a Pascal TI to go with it.

No one knows for sure what is coming out when. And even if the 1080 non ti or whatever they end up calling it has better processing, dp 1.3 and more memory I'd wait for it. In a few weeks they may announce it - unless this person is without a video card, I'd wait 3 weeks for the announcement to get more concrete details. Of course if this person has cash to spare I guess it wouldn't hurt but $500 for an obsolete video card is a chunk of cash to me.
