Upgrade a Katamai PIII?

Is it possible to upgrade a Katamai (sp?) PIII? I'm not sure what motherboard I have, but I can take a look. These were slot processors, right? I'd like to upgrade this 450 MHz to around a 1GHz PIII without swapping out the motherboard. Also how well does Linux handle a processor swap? Does it matter?

You should be able to upgrade your Katmai PIII processor. I believe they were all slot 1, so in order for you to upgrade to a 1 ghz CPU, you will probably need a slotket adapter which will allow you to put a socket 370 processor into a slot 1 mobo. The slotket adapters are getting harder to find, but you can also check the FSFT forum as well. You have a choice of getting a PIII 1 ghz or a Celeron somewhere in the 1 ghz range. Both are socket 370 coppermines and both can be found to run on a 100 FSB which your motherboard likely supports. The PIII 1 ghz also come in the 133 FSB variety but you'll have to make sure your mobo supports that. Also, if you have any desire to OC, you should get a 100 FSB CPU.

I don't know anything about Linux.

You really need to find out what board you have. In order to upgrade, you need a board that can proivde the low voltage needed for Coppermine's (1.7v I believe). Do not install a Coppermine CPU without finding out weather your board can provide the low voltage.

Yeah it depends on your board. If it doesn't support a cumine, the best you'll be able to do is 600 mhz. And you have to make sur eyou get the correct 600 mhz processor. 600e is cumine. 600b is 133 fsb. 600eb is cumine 133. plain old 600 is the one you want if you can't do cumine.

Well I just took a gander. It's an Abit BH6!! Woohoo, I love those boards. I just upgraded my parent's (my old board) to a 1GHz Celeron, so I know it can be done with the new BIOS.

I did forget though, does it matter which board revision I have in determining whether I could upgrade this machine? I know my old one was the original series, so I assume it doesn't matter except for which BIOS patch to apply.

Does the PIII 1GHz at a 100 MHz bus come in a Slot (SECC) style or FCPGA? What's the difference between a SECC1 and SECC2?

The 1GHz 100MHz FSB PIII comes in SECC2 and FC-PGA. You can get the slot 1 version here. Slot 1 PIII only come in SECC2. SECC was the first cartridge that was a FULL cartridge, SECC2 is just a half a cartridge. SECC was phased out once the PIIIs came out and Intel started producing the PIIs in SECC2 form also. You won't find an SECC PIII so don't worry about it. It was just for the PIIs.
